    Remove and refit heater core

    D102100

    Remove

    Warning: Depressurise cooling system by opening and re-closing closure cap on coolant compensation tank.
    1. Drain coolant
    Note: Collect coolant in pan

    2. Remove condensation drain (1) (LHD)


    • Unscrew 2x bolt
    3. Remove condensation water drain (RHD)
    4. Detach coolant hose
    Note: Mark coolant hose (3) and connection (2) before removal to avoid confusion when refitting.
    • Detach 2x coolant hose
    – Unclip 2x quick-release fitting

    5. Remove windscreen trim seal (1)


    Note: Only on vehicles with heater housing insulator.
    6. Remove screen wiper arms (2)
    Note: Only on vehicles with heater housing insulator.
    • Remove 2x covers
    • Unscrew 2x nut
    • Remove 2x washers
    • Detach 2x wiper arm from shaft

    7. Remove windscreen trim (1)


    Note: Only on vehicles with heater housing insulator.
    • Lift windscreen trim in bulkhead area
    • Unclip 5x clip (3)
    Note: Carefully release the clips from the bulkhead bracket from inside outward.
    • Remove hose (2) for windscreen washer system

    8. Detach air distributor housing from bulkhead outside


    Note: Only on vehicles with heater housing insulator.
    • Unscrew 8x bolt

    9. Remove central console

    10. Remove air distribution rear footwell (1)


    Note: Only for vehicles with air conditioning
    11. Remove central console bracket right
    • Unscrew 2x bolt (2)

    12. Disconnect wiring harness of electrical add-on heater

    13. Detach and remove heater core cover


    • Unscrew 8x bolt (1) and (2)

    14. Remove insulator


    Note: Only on vehicles with insulator.
    15. Remove heater core with heater pipes
    16. Detach heater pipes
    • Detach 2x heater pipe

    Install

    17. Attach heater pipes to heater core


    • Replace 2x seal ring
    18. Insert heater core
    Note: To guide the heater pipes through the splash panel, a 2nd person is required.
    19. Install insulator
    Note: Only on vehicles with insulator.
    20. Fit heater core cover
    • Tighten 8x bolt
    21. Connect wiring harness of electrical add-on heater
    22. Fit central console bracket right
    • Tighten 2x bolt
    23. Fit air distribution rear footwell
    24. Fit central console
    25. Attach air distributor housing to bulkhead outside
    Note: Only on vehicles with insulator.
    • Tighten 8x bolt
    26. Fit windscreen trim
    Note: Only on vehicles with insulator.

    • Attach screen washer hose


    • Clip in 5x clip
    27. Install screen wiper arms
    Note: Only on vehicles with insulator.
    • Attach 2x wiper arm to shaft
    Note: Ensure the screen wiper arms are correctly positioned.
    • Fit 2x washer
    • Tighten 2x nut 17 Nm
    • Install 2x cover cap
    28. Install windscreen trim seal
    Note: Only on vehicles with insulator.
    Important: The following installation sequence must be observed.
    29. Attach coolant hoses to heater core
    • Slide 2x locks on the quick-release fittings in the arrow direction up
    to the stop
    – Plastic rings (green) are covered
    • Attach 2x quick-release fitting on the heater core (1) connections up
    to the stop
    Note: Note the markings applied.
    • Slide 2x locks (3) on the quick-release fittings in the arrow direction
    up to the stop
    – Plastic rings (green) must be visible
    • Check correct seat of quick-release fittings and visibility of the
    plastic rings (arrows)

    30. Fit condensation drain (LHD)


    • Tighten 2x bolt
    31. Fit condensation water drain (RHD)
    32. Fill and bleed cooling system

    Z 14 XEL, Z 14 XEP
    A 16 XER, Z 16 XEP, Z 16 XER, Z 16 XE1
    Z 18 XE
    A 18 XER, Z 18 XER
    Z 13 DTH
    Z 20 LEH, Z 20 LEL, Z 20 LER
    Z 17 DTH, Z 17 DTL, Z 17 DTR, Z 17 DTJ, A 17 DTR, A 17 DTJ
    Z 19 DT, Z 19 DTL

    Important: Perform check for leaks with utmost care as hot coolant will escape into the driver's footwell if there are leaks in coolant
    connections at the heater core.
    33. Check coolant system for leaks

    Z 14 XEL, Z 14 XEP
    A 16 XER, Z 16 XEP, Z 16 XER, Z 16 XE1
    Z 18 XE
    A 18 XER, Z 18 XER
    Z 13 DTH
    Z 20 LEH, Z 20 LEL, Z 20 LER
    Z 17 DTH, Z 17 DTL, Z 17 DTR, Z 17 DTJ, A 17 DTR, A 17 DTJ
