Mudgala Puranahasyaalu (Day2)
Recap
Yesterday we spoke about Mudgala Maharshi’s story. Mudgala Maharshi with
blessings of the Lord Ganapathy, could understand the leela and the tatva of the Lord
by penance. All this is composed under the precious Mudgala Puranam. Mudgala
Maharshi recited this precious Puranam to Dakshina Murthy. This is also considered in
some places as an Upanishad and is also known as Purano Upanishad. The Purana has
all attributes to seem like an Upanishad. We went through about this yesterday. Lord
as a ParaBrahma roopi and the Maya shakti. Talking about Maya he says that the entire
world is a Maya. Maya and the world are not different but mean the same. The world
is developed as it is only due to the Maya. Whose Maya, is it anyway? The Lord’s. His
manifestations are endless. So is Maya. It is also a power of the Lord. The Lord here is
none other than Ganapathy. The Purana talks about the Maya by Lord Ganapathy. This
Upanishad can also be called as Vynayaki Maya. Maya is the fuel that drives the heart
and also the mind. Incarnations in the Purana were of eight forms and took place in
various cosmic ages. Chinta Mani Ganapathy is not a form but Vakratunda is the first
incarnation in the series of eight incarnations. Chinta Mani is the other name of
Ganapathy. To brighten one’s chitta (mind), he needs chinta mani (Ganapathy). The
whole world is a part of our mind so is our mind the part of the world. To realise the
true potential of the chitta (mind) one needs to understand the Paramatma (the ultimate).
Kshipta (Chaotic or fickle),Mudha (Lazy) ,Vikshipta (Partially focused
mind),Ekagra (One-pointed mind) and Niruddha (Fully absorbed mind) are the
five main states of a chitta (mind). If one is able to overcome these states, he’s
said to shine bright. The process to overcome these is Yoga. To educate about the
yoga is the main motto of the Ganesha Purana. If one is able to overcome these
states, he can attain peace. The shanti (peace) is Ganapathy swaroopam or
Brahmam. So the main purpose is to highlight that the moksha is the shanthi.
Maya
Lord Parameshwara talks about a particular instance on Maya to Lord Parvathi. The power
which Lord possesses to create this universe is nothing but Maya. Anyone and everyone can
acknowledge this fact. Everyone has their own definition about Maya. With his Maya shakti,
Lord created the world. We must question ourselves have we overcome Maya or are we a part
of Maya? As we are all a part of this world, we are eventually part of Maya. Don’t think of
Maya as duping or faking or fraud. Think of Maya as a power of Lord responsible for creation.
Always remember this definition. It is all strange that the world is a Maya, isn’t it? Strange and
equally amazing. Different things happening around us in the world is due to Lord
Parameshwara’s Maya shakti. So, there is no difference between Shakti and Maya. Shakti is
Maya and Maya is Shakthi. As a part of this world, how we must realise this is we must first
know about Maya mayam and then Maya atheetham. Lord is of two types, one is Maya mayudu
and Maya atheetudu. Maya despite being his power is also a reason for his existence. Because
of his power, we talk about him as Maya mayudu(one who creates the illusion). He is also a
Maya atheethudu (one who is beyond). As a being on this world, you first realise Lord as a
Maya Mayudu. This is described in Vedanta as Saguna Brahma. Whatever we talk in Upasana
about the history, story and events of Lord are all components of Maya itself. In Maya atheetam
(stage where Lord is beyond Maya), there are no stories, events or leela there is only the pure
creator itself. We always associate the term Maya as cheating or being delusional but Maya is
the power of Lord. If there is no Maya, Lord won’t have an avatar or leela or even history. That
is why we must first realise Lord as Maya Mayudu. This is how he created the world, created
miracles and experiences. All the leela is Maya mayam only right? Along with that Lord is also
Maya atheeth, whatever we can grasp we must realise it is only due to Lord. A person who is
a Yogi, does not see the world as a separate entity and creation as a separate entity, he views it
as one. Even in the Maya maya Vishwam (world), lord himself is only present in various forms.
Lord is not present somewhere in the sky but within the world itself. Everything in the world
constitutes to form him. Sarvam Brahmam highlights the fact the everything in the world is a
part of Lord and his creation. He who is a Maya mayudu is residing within everyone in form
of aatman or soul. Everyone who is a part of Hindu dharma acknowledges this fact that God is
present within us in form of a soul. One who has knowledge on Gita also knows and
acknowledges that the God is omnipresent while being beyond the world. Me God and Creation
are the three aspects that co-relates to Human World God. Then who am I? To realise this one
must not have any knowledge related to his perishable body but to have knowledge about the
light within. This light glows within the world and is nothing but one’s aatman or soul. A
person who realises that his actual form is his soul loses interest over his body and worldly
pleasures. One needs Yoga sadhana to achieve this.
Srsti kramam (order of creation)
How did this world evolve from the Paramatma and is present in how many layers we must
know this. What is the subject of the creation? It’s not about India or Australia or America or
even about the Sun or the Moon. Not only this world but also heaven or hell. How did the Lord
get this idea of creation? Every purana talks about the creation. This is moudgala
mahapuranam. This is a very vast scripture. This scripture has close to 24000 slokas and is
hence kown as a mahapuranam.
Parabrahma/Brahma
As you a person are part of the world, you talk about your perspective relevant to this world
but Brahmam was also present before the creation. Because he is present is why we have this
world around us. The creator is the first person in the hierarchy of the universe. He is none
other than Brahma. We’ve come across this word so often during the discourse, who is
Brahma? Brahma is God. To know about Brahma is Brahma Jigyasa. From whom the process
of creation begins is no one else but Brahma. How did he do it? How does Brahma look? We
often tend to create an image when we hear about something that it has a particular shape or
form. Is he alone or he has a team? We are always pondering. But Brahma is alone. Ekam
Brahmam Anekam Prapancham which merely translates to Brahma is always alone while the
Brahma created world is made up with so many. There is no day nor night, there is no light nor
any darkness, there is nothing but isn’t there anything even in nothing? Without something
there won’t be anything. So we should therefore acknowledge that there is something. To
counter light you need dark, a question arises in our minds is there anything which is neither
light nor dark because we are programmed to believe so. It is because we are a part of the world
in which there is light as well as dark. We are used to this world that we do not realise there is
something beyond it too. Because it is unknown to our imagination we tend to ignore it.
Avyaktam, anekam and ekam are the three things. We are part of the anekam. Before creation,
there wasn’t even anekam. We must actually think about this. This is again a matter of conflict
within your heart. Is Lord one or Many? Our mind is able to realise that there is only one
supreme power responsible for the entire creation of our cosmos. But in reality, we cannot ever
estimate the significance of God. It is Brahma who first thought about creating the world. If he
did not think so, we would not have this world. But why did he even get this thought in the first
place? Because of various pralayas (deluge) different karma was remaining to provide different
creatures an opportunity to complete their karmas, this world was created. No one can
accurately predict the origin of the universe but it is important we acknowledge the role of the
creator (Brahma). Why do we need to know about the world if we had to just know about the
creator? Just like in Bhagavatham, after explaining about various things in the end it concludes
saying everything is because of Narayana. It is similar here. We need to understand about the
world just to understand God’s leela and also we must realise that the leela occurs only because
God is present and if we don’t bother about the leela and just focus on God, we can even realise
that God is ever present.
Siddhi Buddhi sameta Ganapathy
Lord does not have a particular shape or form. Even it’s beyond anyone’s knowledge to decide
a form for Lord. Lord’s Maya shakti is the reason everything exists in front of us. Maya is of
two types. This can be only heard in Mudgala Purana. People who are versed with Upanishads
may know this but it is in a much subtler and clearer way in the Mudgala Purana. We must first
understand the Ganapathy element. Ganapathy himself is Brahma. The maya induced by
Ganapathy is known as Vynayiki Maya. If it is related to Vishnu element, it is Vaishnavi Maya,
if related to the Shiva element it becomes Saivi maya or Shambhavi maya. The matter of fact
is that all these are one. Maya is one and even the Lord is one. Maya doubled and became two.
Brahma and his Maya are two elements right. Maya broke into two and spread across the world.
World here doesn’t mean only Earth it also extends right from hell to heaven. Lord’s Maya is
responsible in creating various worlds, planets stars and universe. The thought invokes a sense
of astonishment and that is nothing but Maya. Maya shakti is of two types. Buddhi rupa and
Moha rupa. This world is created by our minds itself, we think that something belongs to us or
something belongs to others all this is created within one’s mind. Our mind is an embodiment
of the Maya shakti. Even Lord is beyond our minds. Our mind is part of the nature but the
nature itself is part of a Maya. So it is evident that our mind is also an integral part of the Maya.
Our minds also tend to possess two powers. One power is to belief that every thing is existent
in the current world visible to us and it also has the power to realise Brahma and be liberated.
Similarly, it is the mind itself that says that seeking knowledge about Brahma is tough and let’s
focus on the world itself. So eventually our mind is also Maya. Our minds are often paired with
attachment. Maya and siddhi are the same. Just because I completed so many rounds, my
daughter’s marriage is fixed, I performed several yagnas and Gods have blessed me all this
come under siddhi. Siddhi stands for achievement. The Siddhi that you attained is for what?
It’s for worldly pleasures. Even gods want siddhi. Lord Brahma, the creator would want to
finish the task of creation and witness the world right? He is also expecting siddhi. Similarly
other gods also seek for siddhi and would want their positions to remain intact. Karma is a part
of Maya. Karma here stands for action. Our mind is a part of Maya. Whatever action we do is
Maya. Maya is something I told you to refrain from it is Lord’s shakti. You feel like doing
some work, your mind has the thought to do some work, it is then finishing the task expecting
some siddhi. Just because it would achieve some siddhi or hopes to achieve some siddhi. You
cannot complete a karma without receiving siddhi. You cannot touch fire and not expect it to
burn, it is its siddhi. Similarly if you commit an action without any intention you are bound to
receive some form of siddhi. If you commit an action without expectation, it gives a siddhi
which is chitta shuddi. Chitta suddi is nothing but peace of mind. If you want to receive mukhti,
you should perform duties without expecting a result. If you have to constantly roam around
the world, you need a type of maya which is avidya. Similarly you need maya to escape this
world, this maya is vidya. Hindu religion is the religion which welcomes and acknowledges
maya. Maha maya as avidya is responsible to bind someone within different worlds. If you are
able to understand something, that is buddhi (intelligence). Some people may leave the
pravachan thinking why would they need to leave the world but it is for a matter of fact that
you seek knowledge. It is not easy to overcome Maya. Isn’t Moham a siddhi? Isn’t illusion also
an achievement? You may develop or break an attachment with something this happens only
when Moham is paired with buddhi. So, Maya has two shaktis. Whose shakti is it anyway? It
is Brahma’s. Who is Brahma? Brahma is no one but Ganapathy. Who has the ability to be in
the minutest of things and is also as huge as several worlds exist within him? Ganapathy. Lord
has control over his Maya shakti. Thus the two forms of Maya shakti became siddhi and buddhi.
Finally gives a darshan as a siddhi buddhi sameta Ganapathy. It is told so wonderfully. The
thing that derives moham(illusion) is siddhi (achievement). I should do this tomorrow; I should
complete this tomorrow not only do we think but we tend to fulfil it. Maya makes us do it and
ensures that we complete it. Even Lord Indra is always worrying that nothing should happen
to his position. Moham (illusion) happens to us in various ways. Even though our mind is the
same, it acts differently for different illusions. Mind is always with Moham. Our mind is always
attached to something. Siddhi gives birth to moham while moham stays with the buddhi. The
actual truth is Brahmam. We know this but we ignore this. The world is non existent but we
believe it to be existing this is Moham or illusion. That is the reason we develop attachment
towards things and are constantly working to seek something or the other. We are doing it for
siddhi (achievement). Who is running the mind, the illusion and achievement, the Brahma. By
who’s grace we are able to experience Maya shakti is none other than Ganapathy. We often
observe that the Lord is often paired opposite shakti who is his wife. Vishu is paired with
Lakshmi or in case of Shiva it is Gowri and in case of Ganapathy, it is siddhi and buddhi.
Where is Vallabha? She is in form of siddhi and buddhi. Siddhi Lakshmi and if you pray Siddhi
Lakshmi you get a sane mind. Even though you may feel a sense of achievement, your mind
may seek more. It is important that you divert this towards God. Siddha Lakshmi is the one
providing Maya shakti. She is found residing on the lap of Ganapathy. If you visit the Siddhi
Vinayaka temple in Bombay, you will notice that both siddhi and buddhi are sitting on either
side of the Lord’s lap. So whom which Lakshmi should we follow, we need both. If you can
get a hold of God, he’ll help us fulfil through these Lakshmi Devis. Lord won’t let you go even
if you display one tiny bit of devotion towards him. He will eventually make you realise in one
way or the other than the ultimate siddhi or achievement is to realise him. Because one seeks
siddhi, he will need Vidhya as a maya shakti. All the world is present to us as Buddhi and
siddhi.Karma is related to siddhi and how to commit a particular karma is dependent on the
buddhi. The world is running because of Karma. To deserve something one needs to perform
a karma to realise this he should first have a mind. So maya siddhi is based on buddhi siddhi
and who has control of both buddhi and siddhi, it’s the Lord so one must worship Lord with
utmost devotion and then his mind will be pure and he’ll be virtuous. Siddhi is a shakti and
shakti is Devi herself, right? There is no confusion here but one must only develop a perception.
Thus, Ganpathy is also present in a form of siddhi buddhi sameta Ganapathy. So first there is
the creation then the maya and finally the being.
Tattvalu Brahma
As nature received it’s yogam, it started receiving the tattva (material). Maha tattvam first
appeared and then Ahankaaram. Ahankaaram (pride) paired with Satwika shakti(sattvic power)
became gyanam while ahankaaram paired with rajas am it became kriya shakti, when paired
with tamasam, it became dhravya shakti. Ganesha talks about the formation of the universe.
Brahmam, his maya shakti, siddhi buddhi, his imagination gave birth to two elements prakruti
purushulu and because of these various things were further born. The five senses were born
and one needs them to experience. Shabdam(hearing) means sky, sparsha(touch) means air,
rupam(visibility) means fire, ruchi(taste) means water and gandham(smell)means land. Then
was born perceiving and understanding. All these were formed. Prakruti purushalu are devatalu
(gods). Without them it is impossible to use our senses and experience our lives. There are
abhimaana devas for each thing. For instance, for creation of hand, there is a particular
abhimaana devata (favourable God). These devas are known as Rishis (someone who knows
everything). Heat or cold is being felt through the sense of touch. How did we feel it? It was
because of the abhimaana devata of the hand who created this. Without the favourable Gods,
we won’t have senses. Our eyes are shutting, who is the favourable God of eyes, it is the Sun.
For ears it is dikpalakulu, for olfactory it is air and for taste in mouth it is varuna and for speech
it is Agni. There are abhimaana devata right from our heads to the toes. Shiroabhimaana devata
to Paadabhimaanadevata. Yagna is the kriya where we remember these gods for its for them
our senses are functioning properly. That is the reason also why our bodies are known as
devalayams(temples). The tattvas changed their forms into these gods. Then they had a unique
purpose. Tantra shastra says there are 36 tattvas others say there are 24 or 25 but no one is sure.
All the tattvas have now started to form a stotra about the Lord. Who gave the mind? Buddhi
(Mind) is sitting on his lap. Each of the tattva is inspired by him and are reciting it. He is true,
he is false, he is actual, he is pretentious and are reciting the stotra. They are also describing
the roopam. He is holding paasham just like his mother Parvathi. On one hand he is carrying
his tusk while he is carrying a weapon on the other. The remaining two hands are holding a
conch and a pasha just like Parvathi. He looks huge and is obese. Whatever we must do, you
must order us and also bless us with the ability to do. Therefore we need the thought, the order
and the ability to execute a particular task recited the tattvas. Lord blesses them and calls them
as Rushulaara and offers them the power to execute tasks on their own. Who ever is born here
as a life, his first task is to pray God. It is flowing and ever consistent. It was because of their
tapassu (penance), they could get a thought and then an order.Happy with their penance lord
offered them an appearance and his will to carry on with the order. All the tattvas combined
together and then formed the universe.
Gunesa Brahma
If prakruti purushulu are parents, tattvas are like eggs born out of them. They all together form
a single egg. Vedas, Upan countlesishads, manusmriti and even the Big Bang Theory are all
based on this. If we talk about the universe through the puranas also every one will get bored.
As we are travelling back and thinking about the source where we came from if you listen it
with concentration it is good. We all talk about these as separate entities but they are all one.
They united to become a giant radiating ball. This is known as hiranmayandam. Because of
Lord’s power, this giant light ball shattered into various forms. The concept of one and many
is also very evident here. As soon as this started, a stream of water erupted from this and a
single light is floating on water. This was Guneshwarudu. The large radiating ball now broke
and separated into a million forms. What was the reason for it to break into so many? There
was a power that broke it from within. It was Guneshwarudu. The pieces were countless. This
is similar to the Big Bang. It is our Indian Rishis who have given so much knowledge that is
ancient and so much precise and with such a scientific approach that it is commendable.
Although this would have been the earliest form of science, our puranas also have scriptures
about how Brahma broke into shuddi and buddhi this tells us about the significance of our
ancestors and their perception of looking at things. It was a sight to behold as slowly the giant
radiating ball broke into various pieces with several hands, limbs and bodies. He was also given
the name of Maha kaaranudu(it is because of the reason he split into many)and also
Turiyudu(since there are three gunas) and also Guneshwarudu(he was filling life with the three
gunas). Guneshwarudu was the Adipati to the three gunas. All the pancha bhootas were also
derived from these gunas. Nature is said to be trigunaatmakam. He also had several names due
to his various forms. As water was the source of the birth of Guneshwara, nara was the name
and because he was an ayna his name is said to be Narayana. He later became Rudra, shiva and
brahma and various others. Guneshwara later committed penance to understand his source of
birth. Everything that breaks down from the source would want to know a way back to its
source. Same is the case with the lord and Guneshwara. Ganesha then gave darshan to
Guneshwara and this is again in form of a stotra. This stotram is considered to be of very high
level as it is Guneshwara who is reciting this. His actual rupam is shantam and to reach it is
yogam and as a person commiting this he becomes Sushantam Yogeshwaram Aanatosmi.
Everyone prays God expecting something. But this stotram is about how this form came as a
separate entity but wants to connect back to the source. This is the stotra. Ganapathy impressed
with the stotra gave Gunesha an appearance.
Viratpurusa Brahma
Even as we spoke earlier about this Virata rupam, there may be doubts which will be cleared
in this discourse. This giant form of Lord that had no end had several worlds, beings and
everything within him. This form is known as Viratapurusa. Gunesha called back all his eggs
which were earlier broken prayed to the Lord and asked him to impersonate this avatar. Lord
Ganapathy agrees and provides him with the ability and then appears before him in form of
Viratapurusa. The vishwaroopa is of three types. Hiranyagarbha (this is the antaryami present
in the Viratpurusa), Vishwarupa and Vaishna Nara. All these three forms when join together
form a Viratpurusa. The Viratpurusa either was derived from Guneshwara or Guneshwara came
from the Viratpurusa is unknown. Viratpurusa now starts to pray Ganapathi. First God created
Prakruti Purushulu, then tattvas, Guneshwara and Virat purusa. Without doing so many things,
the world can’t be created right. All these things should co-exist and their function should be
ever flowing without any breaks. These things could not be possible without wisdom. The
wisdom had to be created to be rid of Vigna (obstacles). Hence any person would pray to
remove the vigna (obstacles) before starting any work. The person who bears this is none other
than Eeshwarudu, Vigneshwarudu. You can now observe the weightage behind the name of
the word Vignesh right? We should not just pray Vignesh in the beginning and keep him aside
but realise his leela and the stature and worship him accordingly. Who ever comes to this world
has to connect with him in some way or the other. The pancha bhoota or the 5 elements in
nature need a certain vigna. If a sea does not have an obstacle, it would overflow and damage
the civilization. Who is the obstacle here? If wind blows freely, we won’t sustain. Who is the
one controlling it? It is Lord Vignesh. So one must acknowledge him accordingly and worship
him. You can’t simply call him a Hindu god who is son of Lord Shiva and Parvathi. There’s
much more to that.
Ganesa Gita
Then Lord Parameshwar says Lord Ganapathy will take various forms to bless the world. He
would also be as a Chinta Mani. Mani means something that emits light and creates an
inspiration. Yogis counter the 5 elements that bother the chitta intelligently and worship the
Brahma. This is called shantam. There won’t be Maya but only intellect. That peace itself is a
form of Lord. The state of achieving it is through sadhana. A living being can leave his chitta
and can know Ganapathy while in a state of samadhi. If one attains this state, he is also similar
to me says Ganapathy to the pancha bhutalu in Ganesa Gita. Lord Parameswara says that
Ganapathy had taken eight incarnations to bless the people of this world. Gods take incarnation
to slay demons or for loka kalyanam(welfare) of this world. Each incarnation represents the
stage of absolute as it unfolds into creation. Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Mahodara Gajavaktra
,Lambodara ,Vikata ,Vighnaraja, Dhumravarna are the eight forms of the lord Ganapathi.
These eight avatars help us realise the purpose of Yoga in our lives. All these preachings strive
for chitta shanti (peace of mind) and are an integral part of sadhana. Lord Shiva says Parvathi
that he has spoke about the leela of Lord Ganapathy.
Daksha Prajapati then says to Mudgula Maharishi that he is so happy to receive such knowledge
on the laws of creation and the pancha devatalu and everyone is a part of Lord Ganapathy. All
this is Ganesha Mayam says Daksha Prajapati and asks the Maharshi about him gaining so
much knowledge and what Mudgala Maharshi explains is in the other part of the discourse.
