Bali as Home to Gods Who are Residing Temporarily in Thousands of Temples.

Long known at the island of a thousand temples Bali is indeed home to thousands of holy Hindu temples, repositories of sacred artifacts and spiritually imbued as to earn Bali its alternate title as the island of the Gods. Beritabali.com reports that a survey conducted in 1979 counted 5,259 temples in Bali, a number that has since grown and is now estimated to exceed 10,000. Contained within this astounding number of temples found on a relatively small island are 9 main temples (Kahyangan jagat Bali), 714 secondary temples (Dang Kahyangan) and 4,368 minor temples (Kahyangan Tiga). This tally does not include other

religious sites such as holy places of spirit worship (tempat suci pemujaan roh suci leluhur) also known as Pura Kawitan or Padadian. While Bali Hinduism once paid homage to an entire pantheon of deities, for a variety of reasons, modern Balinese Hinduism is largely observant to Sanghyang Widi Wasa the Supreme One. Historical evidence of sites dedicated to prayer and worship date back to 800 A.D. Continue to page 2

Zoo and the local community have fought hard to obtain elephants for the collection in order to remain competitive in winning visitors. The park, owned by a native of Singapadu, prioritizes the employment of local residents. The initial addition of 6 elephants to the Bali Zoo has immediately increased employment with 24 new staff hired to handle the care and feeding of the Sumatran Jumbos. www.balidiscovery.com

The arrest of an American man who broke into a woman's house and tried to suck her blood over the weekend has sparked discussion about the impact of vampire books and movies on youth culture.
Whether pop culture played a role in the attack remains to be seen, as 19-yearold Lyle Monroe Bensley awaits a psychiatric evaluation in jail on burglary charges in Galveston, Texas. Found growling and hissing in a parking lot and wearing only boxer shorts, the pierced and tattooed Bensley claimed he was a 500-year-old vampire who needed to "feed," Galveston Police Capt. Jeff Heyse said. Vampires have been a focal point of literature since Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, "Dracula". But fascination, particularly among young people, has peaked in recent years with the popularity of the "Twilight" books about teenage vampires and the television series, "True Blood." "I think the vampire is a metaphor for the outsider and the predator in all of us," said author Anne Rice, whose Vampire Chronicles series has captured the imaginations of horror fans since the 1970s. "We're all conscious at times of being alone, of being alienated, of being a secret self that fears exposure to the judgments of others. So we feel like vampires. Bensley is now being held in the Galveston County Jail on a $40,000 bond for home burglary with intent to commit a felony. The woman, who lived near Bensley and did not know him, escaped the attack

goodness sake." While Bensley's Texas antics have captured international attention, the delusion of actually being a vampire has been a contributing factor in other criminal cases as well. In 1996, a 16-year-old Kentucky youth obsessed with the role-playing game, "Vampire, the Masquerade," enlisted three other teenagers to go with him to Florida to help kill the parents of his former girlfriend. Two years later, a San Francisco man claiming to be a 2,000-year-old vampire was arrested for slashing the necks of four homeless people, one fatally. A serial killer arrested in England in 1949 allegedly drank a cup of blood from each of his six victims. Rice has interacted with thousands of fans of her Vampire Chronicles novels, but said such intense personal identification with vampires was "quite beyond me." "My readers are romantics. They're into the poetry and the romance of vampires; they don't think they themselves are vampires," Rice said. "I have never personally met anyone in all these years who claimed to be a vampire.

It's All Happening at the Zoo

Bali Zoo Welcomes Six Sumatra Elephants to Singapadu
Anak Agung Gde Putra, the owner of the Bali Zoo in Singapadu, Bali, has prevailed in his long battle to add Sumatran elephants to his park's animal collection. A part of the c o m m u n i t y i n Singapadu, local residents surrounding the Zoo are said to be thrilled with the arrival of the giant mammals to their neighbourhood. On Monday, six of a total of 14 elephants authorized by the Minister of Forestry for the Bali Zoo arrived on site. Such was the excitement of the surrounding community - the Banjars of Apuan and Seseh, that, when the pachyderms were unloaded after the long truck journey from Sumatra to Bali, the local residents took turns giving the appreciative animals a

unharmed, Heyse said. Kevin Petroff, chief of the Galveston County District Attorney's office said no defense attorney has been appointed to date, and if Bensley had hired a lawyer privately, no notice had been filed. Dr. Thomas Garza, who teaches a course in vampire lore at the University of Texas, said young people might aspire to be like vampires because they cheat death and are able to stay beautiful, powerful, and youthful for eternity. The modern vampire in popular culture is more attractive, suave, and fashionably dressed than the Old World Slavic vampires, adding to the resurgence of their appeal, he added. "I would say that it is the Twilight saga in particular that has brought out the younger teen fans. In that connection, Edward is a very 'safe' vampire, a kind of 'starter vamp' for beginners, if you will," Garza said. "He's pretty, yes, so the seduction's there, but he's more than reluctant to act on his and Bella's sexual desires. He can go out in daylight - and even 'sparkles' in the sun, giving him a completely non-threatening character. He drives a Volvo, for

Local villagers were proud that the park had completed the complex rules and requirements needed to win approval from the government to house elephants at the Bali Zoo. Because of the several animal attractions now operating in Bali, both the Bali Balinese temples or pura, while places of worship, are not the permanent domicile of God, but more a intersection between the manifest and spiritual worlds where, on certain occasions, such as the anniversary of a Pura (odalan), God and spirits will take up temporary residence. These holy visitations in Bali are usually accompanied by ministrations delivered by holy men (pedanda), sacred dances and mantra-filled incantations chanted in ancient Sanskrit.

A "cow whisperer," helicopters and infrared cameras: no effort is being spared to find Austrian runaway cow Yvonne, who escaped slaughter in May to seek refuge in a Bavarian forest.
The cow has become a media star in Germany and Austria, having evaded capture for almost three months, with one German company putting up a 10,000 euro ($A13,892) reward for her capture earlier this week. But an Austrian animal sanctuary, which has offered to buy Yvonne to spare her another traumatic trip to the slaughterhouse, is resorting to more unusual means to find the timid animal. A "cow whisperer" has been communicating with Yvonne every day by telepathy, Britta Freitag from the Aiderbichl sanctuary near

slaughter before she escaped. German police even issued a permission to shoot her after she ran in front of a police car, citing her as a threat to traffic. The permission to shoot has now been postponed according to the Aiderbichl sanctuary, which has been posting near-daily updates about Yvonne on its website.

Salzburg. The cow apparently understood she would not be harmed but remained too afraid to show herself following the distressing transfer from her Austrian farm to Bavaria, according to these telepathic conversations. Meanwhile, efforts to locate the bovine animal by helicopter and using infrared cameras had come to nought, although she was reportedly sighted twice before vanishing again into the wild. A tracker with experience in Africa has also been trying to find her trail, according to the sanctuary. Last week, a bull named Ernst was brought in by the Aiderbichl people to lure Yvonne out of her trees with his voice. Her son Friesi has also been roped in to help, to no avail. Yvonne hails from the southern Austrian province of Carinthia but was sold to a Bavarian farm where she was to be fatted up for

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

'day again readers and here we go for another weekly crap on. It's been as usual a great week in the A.F.L and let's face it, if the Pies win it's a good week for me anyway bla bla bla. I'm going to come clean and tell you all that I've been in Australia for a little while now and upon my return I have been bombarded with stories about what's going on up here amongst the legendary expat community from Sanur to Canggu. What can I say other than WOW This guy said that and the other [email protected] fellow reckons this and that women did this and so on and so on. I have heard about the fellow that is going broke and the couple that are having trouble and the guys who are drunks and the fellow who king hit that guy (from behind I might add) and the list goes on and on and on, and quite frankly I'm over the whole lot of it. What happened to coming to Bali and enjoying your life? Did you people get lost along the way?? Have you all forgotten how good your lives are here?? One of the best ones I heard was that a good friend of mine was deported or will be deported for apparently working without the correct documents. This from the mouth of a red nosed idiot is completely untrue. I know who said this and who it was said to, and I'm going to use this editorial as a medium to get a message to the rumour monger who started this little piece of bullshit that he should stop making up stories about people that are here on a bone fide (you may have to look that one up if you can read matey) visa doing what they do. Get a life you fool and start concentrating on the rats in your kitchen. I did hear another ripper about a very good business in Bali that was apparently going broke or has gone bankrupt, so I took the time to call the owner to confirm this, only to find out that it was just another story. It seems punters that when someone doesn't know anything at all about the truth, they just make up a story and for the most of us up here, that stinks. So many people I meet, come to Bali and want to move up here to live, and I say do it, as most of the expat contingent that are here at the minute are lost as they couldn't make it in Australia or their home country so they come here and give it a whirl, only to work out that they haven't got enough coin or can't work with the locals to do what they want and fail miserably. Mostly they don't pay their bills and continually offer excuses why, with some good operators making a really good go at it and living here with their families for many fruitful years. I think Bali needs a heap more intelligent people to move here and to work with the great local people and cultivate many, many opportunities. Bali really is a great place to live and the locals do try very hard to accept us and our customs to their island. I'm sure the locals are as fed up as some of us with the little dwarfs that annoy everyone when they are tanked and the dribbling idiots after a big session on the little green bottles. I think what some of the expats need to remember is to mind their own business and to concentrate on doing their own thing instead of being involved in telling fibs about things they don't have a clue about. Some need to act a little more like adults and treat the local with a bit more respect, eg whistling to a waitress isn't the way you would call one to your table in your own country is it ?? So don't do it here. Now that I have gotten that off my chest, I will wind up by saying do unto others as you would like other to do unto you, and remember, Karma has a sting like nothing else, so watch your back matey. Ok folks, there you have it, the flem from my chest translated into words for another week. No doubt some of you won't understand what you just read, as some of you can't read, but for the most of you try to take even a small part of this on board and lets all enjoy Bali as best possible. I hope you all stay Healthy, safe, happy and try your best to remember, we are ALL a long way from home. Enjoy your week, Karn the Pies, ALIASJ

Britain's famous Oxford Dictionary gets to grips with sexting, mankinis

SEXTING, retweeting and even the painfully revealing mankini swimsuit made famous by the movie character Borat all feature in a new edition of Britain's most venerated dictionary, launched today.
Gastric band and cyberbullying - use of electronic communication to bully a person are among the other 400 new entries in the centenary edition of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary. The mankini is a "men's one-piece bathing garment with a T-back" - but fans of Borat: Cultural learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan will be all too familiar with the skimpy, green, bathing attire donned by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 25 Aug - 31 Aug 2011

Aries Mar 20 - Apr 19 Few things bore you more than long and pointless discussions. However, what others have to say isn't just important to them, you've much to gain as well. The problem is they'll take a very long time getting to the point. While this will require enormous patience, it will be worth it. Taurus Apr 20 - May 20
Both your ruler Venus and the Sun are moving to accent love and life's pleasures. This brings a challenging if productive cycle to a conclusion. When reflecting on what you've achieved over the past weeks, you'll feel a huge sense of achievement. Which will make these good times all the more pleasurable.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22 When others complain, as somebody's doing nonstop, you can't help but think of ways to cheer them up. Do that now and you'll only be wasting your time. These complaints aren't really about the matter in question. They're designed to get the attention of one particular individual and will continue until that's been achieved. Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 If you're still brooding over the recent unfair and upsetting antics of certain individuals, it's no surprise. Tempting as it is to try to get back at them, you'd regret it. Ideally, in fact, you'll wait until Mercury ends its retrograde cycle on the 26th. The facts that are revealed then could explain a lot. Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 By the time the week comes to a close, you'll have had to stand up to certain individuals who're obsessed with details. While this usually drives you crazy, it's worth delving into their concerns. Some of the arrangements you've assumed will continue as they always have are changing, and more dramatically than you know. Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 Hopefully during the past three weeks, while Mercury's been retrograde and causing confusion, you've learned how to go with the flow. While this is the reverse of your nature as a thorough Capricorn, it makes life easier. Better yet, the resulting experiences and encounters take you into new and rather exciting territory. Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18
It's been a week since the powerful Aquarius Full Moon. While you've come to terms with many of the feelings it brought to the surface, others are still puzzling you. Frustrating as this is, certain issues take time to understand. But once you do, you'll realise there was good reason to be patient.

Swedish woman who left baby outside restaurant investigated

A Swedish woman who police say left her baby unattended outside a Massachusetts restaurant while she ordered food inside was reported to a state agency for possible child maltreatment.
Police said they were summoned to the Bueno Y Sano eatery in the western Massachusetts college town of Amherst after the 1-year-old boy was left alone in his stroller on the sidewalk for about 10 minutes. The woman, who authorities did not identify, said she "found nothing wrong with the situation" and that it was common in Sweden to leave young children alone outside a restaurant, said police. The boy reportedly was in good health after the incident. Amherst police contacted the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families to file a report of potential abuse or neglect, said DCF spokeswoman Cayenne Isaksen. The agency is investigating the matter. A similar incident made international headlines and sparked a transatlantic debate in 1997 when a Danish mother was arrested after leaving her baby daughter in a stroller on a New York City sidewalk to go inside a restaurant for a drink. A federal jury in Manhattan later rejected her claim that police had falsely arrested her but did award her $66,000 in compensatory and punitive damages following the ordeal. DCF's Isaksen said the agency received more than 110,000 allegations of child maltreatment in 2009, the latest year for which data were available.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20 After the exciting if demanding past several weeks, you're ready for a break. It appears in the form of certain complex family or domestic issues. While you'll have no problem dealing with these, they'll be challenging enough to keep you busy but, equally, rewarding enough you'll feel a sense of accomplishment. Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22 Reassuring as the discussions of the past seven days have been, don't make the mistake of assuming others will do as promised. This has nothing to do with their intentions and everything to do with Mercury still being retrograde. Because of this, even the simplest of plans could change, and change again. Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22
Many people regard obstacles as giving them an opportunity to analyse problems in depth. Being a fire sign and somebody who prefers to take action and ask questions later, you've found recent delays nothing but a nuisance. Still, they are worth investigating. What you learn could help certain eliminate persistent dilemmas.

In-flight film "explains" mysteries of female pleasure

The in-flight entertainment on some planes run by Australian airline Qantas currently c o n t a i n s a somewhat unusual offering -- a movie that purports to elucidate the mysteries of female sexual pleasure.
The 50-minute French film "The Female Orgasm Explained," which includes naked scenes, is carried on long-haul "Video on Demand" aircraft in the airline's "The Edge" channel -- complete with a warning that it is for mature audiences only. It's no longer the taboo subject it was." (what is a female orgasm anyways ??)

Motorised beer cooler lands driver in court

An Australian man had his driving licence suspended for 10 months and was fined after he was caught driving a scooter made of a motorised beer cooler capable of carrying several dozen drinks while he was drunk. The unconventional scooter featured a cooler box mounted on a wheeled frame and powered by a 50 cc engine, complete with a steering handlebar. The cooler doubled
as a driver's seat and was able to hold up to 48 bottles of beer. Chris Petrie, 23 and from Queensland, bought the vehicle over the internet for $600. While assembling it at a friend's house the two sampled a few beers before Petrie decided to drive it home, and that's when the fuzz got involved. "By the time we built it, it was quite late so we thought we'd go for a bit of a test run. He was caught en route and found to be more than three alcohol limit, and was charged with drink driving and driving without a licence. In court, the judge asked if the cooler was fully loaded and was told it was full of canned rum and Cokes. The sentence included an A$500 fine.

Their diving board was the roof of the Institute of Contemporary Art, as thousands of spectators marveled at the acrobatic feat from behind a glass wall on the museum's fourth floor gallery, and from nearby grandstands and lawn seats. Some of the best views were had by spectators cruising the waters nearby in leisure boats, or lounging in kayaks mere feet from the divers' entry point. It took just three seconds from take-off to entry, with a host of tucks, twists and somersaults on the way down, before divers pierced the water at speeds of 60 miles per hour, with an audible smack. "You can't help but get nervous for them as you're watching," said Kristie Faletra, 37, who was at the event with her two young sons. So far this year, divers have vaulted from natural cliffs in Chile, Mexico, Greece, France and Italy. They will finish the competition in Ukraine next month. Boston served as the only urban venue. Soon a local redneck pulled in, filled his tank, and asked for his free sex. The owner told him to pick a number from 1 to 10. If he guessed correctly, he would get his free sex. The redneck guessed 8, and the proprietor said, "You were close. The number was 7. Sorry. No sex this time." A week later, the same redneck, along with a buddy, Bubba, pulled in for another fill-up. Again, he asked for his free sex. The proprietor again asked him to guess the correct number. The redneck guessed 2 this time. The proprietor said, "Sorry, it was 3. Snake that crashed funeral up for adoption

A 6-foot (1.83-meter) long tropical snake that showed up uninvited at a Pennsylvania memorial service in May has been nursed back to health and put up for adoption. The red tail boa constrictor was found near a parking area at Hershey Cemetery in central Pennsylvania as guests gathered for a funeral. The snake, which was not aggressive, was later handed over to Forgotten Friend, a reptile sanctuary. The boa constrictor was suffering from a minor respiratory ailment, likely because it had spent several nights in temperatures much cooler than those of its natural habitat in the rain forests of South America, the organization's president, Jesse Rothacker, said at the time. Rothacker said the snake had returned to health and was ready to be adopted. "The snake has had a chance to dine on many, many frozen rats and bask in the warmth of the (sanctuary's) reptile room," he said. "She's doing a lot better. She's at the point now that she's listed for adoption." Rothacker said the sanctuary was seeking an experienced owner and warned current boa constrictor owners against releasing their pets into the wild, an offense he said was tantamount to animal cruelty.

Broncos leave Knights hanging, Hodges hurt

Brisbane strolled past a Newcastle side desperate to strengthen its grip on eighth spot on the NRL ladder in a 26-6 result to close out round 24.
But the victory may have come at heavy price with star centre Justin Hodges in danger of missing the remainder of the season. Hodges, who scored one of the Broncos' five tries, lasted just six minutes into the second half before limping off with his third hamstring injury of the season. He cut a forlorn figure as he sat on the bench, with the very real prospect that his season could be over given his last hamstring tear kept him sidelined for six matches. The Knights, now level with ninth-placed South Sydney with two rounds remaining, did not escape unscathed either. Junior Sau went off early with an ankle injury and Matt Hilder was taken by ambulance to hospital with a nasty gash after a head clash with team-mate Joel Edwards. The double blow left the Knights with just 15 fit players for more than half the game. But even when they had their full complement they struggled to contain a Brisbane side which would have won by more if not for its own wastefulness. Broncos half-back Peter Wallace said coach Anthony Griffin had a few choice words for the side during the interval. "He wasn't too happy [with] the first half, we had the majority of the ball but we were throwing a bit of stupid passes and not completing our sets," he said. "He got up us a bit about that but we fixed it up in the second half and got a few points. "It's always hard here [especially since] they're playing for a spot in the eight too." The Broncos were lucky to get on the board first when video referee Steve Clark needed double-figure looks at replays to award Wallace a try, but there was no doubt when Sau made a defensive blunder as Hodges crossed for 8-0 after 14 minutes. It may have been karma for the first try when what looked a legitimate Josh McGuire try was pulled up for a forward pass, while Chris Houston was sin-binned when he denied Jack Reed a four-pointer by taking out the burly centre without the ball.

The opportunity to put the undermanned Knights to the sword instead became Newcastle's invitation back into the contest, with Akuila Uate cutting the deficit to just two points after Gerard Beale had spilled a clearing kick. The Knights pushed hard after the restart with some strong carries and looked like they had locked it up, only for skipper Kurt Gidley to be held up over the line after a dazzling 20-metre run. Instead of motivating the home side, it signalled the beginning of the end, with Jharal Yow Yeh taking an intercept 90 metres to push the Broncos out by 10 just minutes later. It was one three second-half tries for the visitors with Alex Glenn and Ben Hunt also going over to leave the Knights with just a 32-point lead in points differential over the Rabbitohs, whom they meet in the final round. Newcastle lock Cameron Ciraldo said his side has a lot of work to do if it is to secure its place in the top eight. "We lost a few blokes but [that's] no excuse, we just dropped too much ball, myself included," he said. "We've got to turn around next week. If we win the next two games we deserve to be in the semis then." He said he hopes the Knights get a chance to avenge the loss later in September. "Every time we play them it's probably one of the fastest games we play all year," he said. "Hopefully we meet them again in the semis. "They're too good to give [possession to]. You've got to have more than 50 per cent of the ball and I doubt we had that.

Manly a finals yardstick for Storm

Melbourne may have a top two finish in the can but it will not hold anything back against Manly in what could be a preview to the grand final.
After accounting for premier St George Illawarra, the Storm have set their sights on Friday night on claiming the scalp of second-placed Manly, which has not lost at Brookvale Oval this season. A victory means Melbourne can snuff out any chance the Sea Eagles have of taking the minor premiership away. Storm players were given the afternoon off on Monday after the Dragons

Rapper Machine Gun Kelly charged amid flash mob at mall

Cleveland rapper Machine Gun Kelly was cited with disorderly conduct after he was accused of refusing to get down from a food court table during a flash mob he organized at a suburban U.S. mall.
Police in Strongsville, Ohio, received a tip of a possible flash mob planned for 5 p.m. local time by the rapper, who recently signed a recording deal with rap mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' music label. As the event began, mall management asked a group of people including the rapper not to stand on a table located next to a second-floor railing, according to a statement issued by police. The 21-year-old rapper, whose real name is Richard C. Baker, and two others who failed to comply were removed from the mall, police said. They were charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and released. Video footage posted online shows the event drew a large crowd. Some chanted "MGK! MGK!" as the heavily tattooed that police were called and the student was turned over to their custody. The incident comes a day after Florida police arrested a 17year-old boy who they said had material to make pipe bombs at his home and planned to cause mass casualties at his Tampa high school. In that case, Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor told reporters that Jared Cano had hoped to "cause more casualties than were suffered at Columbine." In the Alaska incident, no injuries or threats were reported, the school district said. The Anchorage student, identified as Bryan Briggs, was in jail facing a charge of misconduct involving a weapon, Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Marlene Lammers said. The school district said in a statement it would be seeking to expel Briggs under a zero-tolerance policy concerning weapons.

match, which was played with finals intensity, following the advice of their physical performance unit. But Melbourne football manager Frank Ponissi rates the looming Sea Eagles clash as the club's "greatest challenge" of the season. "St George are still a benchmark in terms of what they're capable of doing but they've been out of form," he said. "Manly has been in winning form, a team very similar to ourselves." Win or lose the Storm will maintain their top two position, however Ponissi said the team saw it as a way to measure itself ahead of the finals and planned to go all out to win. Melbourne and Manly have a rich recent history, playing off in grand finals in 2008 and 2009, but Ponissi says turnover in the player rosters meant it did not count for much. "Because we had such major turnover of players, we're talking about grand finals the vast majority of players weren't involved in. "Apart from Cameron (Smith), Billy (Slater), Cooper (Cronk), Blairy (Adam Blair) and Quinny (Anthony Quinn), I can't think of anyone else who played in the 2008 grand finals. "(Manly) They've probably got a few more than us but they've probably had a big turnover too." Melbourne remains hopeful of the return of injured half-back Cooper Cronk, who has been working overtime on rehabilitating his ankle injury. Centre Maurice Blair (shoulder) is still an outside chance while forward Sika Manu has been cleared of a back injury.

Reindeer herder finds baby mammoth in Russia Arctic

A reindeer herder in Russia's Arctic has stumbled on the pre-historic remains of a baby woolly mammoth poking out of the permafrost.
The herder said the carcass was as perfectly preserved as the 40,000-year-old mammoth calf Lyuba discovered in the same remote region four years ago, authorities said, adding that an expedition had set off hoping to confirm the "sensational" find. "If it is true what is said about how it is preserved, this will be another sensation of global significance," expedition leader Natalia Fyodorova said in a statement on the Arctic YamaloNenetsk region's official website. Scientists planned to fly the mammoth's remains to the regional capital Salekhard, where it would be stored in a cooler to prevent the remains from decomposing. Giant woolly mammoths have been extinct since the Earth's last Ice Age 1.8 million to around 11,500 years ago. Scientists worldwide were stunned by the discovery of Lyuba, named after the wife of the hunter who discovered her. Arctic ice kept the extinct specimen so immaculately preserved that although her shaggy coat was gone, her skin and internal organs were intact.

abilities to hop and smell.
The DNA code of the tammar wallaby is presented in Genome Biology, published by British-based open-access science publisher BioMed Central. The pint-sized 'roo measures only 45 centimetres from head to tailtip and has long intrigued biologists. It has a 12-month gestation of which 11 months is a period of suspended animation in the womb. At birth, the young weigh only half a gram, and spend nine months in the mother's pouch for protection as they grow. The wallaby joins more than other 130 organisms whose genome has been unravelled. They include humans, the chimpanzee, dog, rat, mouse and rabbit, as well as valuable crops, fungus and the fruit fly, a standard model for lab research. The team says the first kangaroo genome is a milestone in the study of mammal evolution. The ancestors of kangaroos and other marsupials diverged from other mammals at least 130 million years ago. Professor Marilyn Renfree of the University of Melbourne, a lead researcher on the project, said: "The tammar wallaby sequencing project has provided us with many possibilities for understanding how marsupials are different from us."

An international team of researchers say they have sequenced the first genome of a kangaroo, a project aimed at pinpointing the genes that give the marsupial its remarkable

Carney has been linked with a move to France-based Super League side Catalans, with the NRL unlikely to sanction a move to another team in Australia should the Roosters terminate his career with the club. A move to England is also out of the question with the British government rejecting his application for a work permit in 2008 so he could join Huddersfield after being axed by the Raiders. But what is certain is that Carney or Myles, who will join the Titans next season, will not be seen in Roosters colours again this year with the club's senior players believed to have lost patience with the serial offenders. "They haven't been at training for the last couple of weeks, we are rolling along pretty nicely with that crew of guys, so I am not going to upset the applecart," Smith said. "I think the circumstances for Frank we've dealt with and he came back and played a pretty good game for us. "So I would imagine he will hold his spot and we will keep this group of guys going next week.

However, there was no such reprieves for Carney and Gold Coast-bound Myles, who have been told to stay away from the club. Kiwi international prop Nuuausala was allowed to return to training this week and Smith said he was pleased with his response to the punishment. "Frankie had a kick in the tail and he deserved it and accepted it that he deserved it," Smith said. Myles, Carney and Nuuausala will face the club's board later this week to answer breach notices issued to them, with Carney facing the genuine prospect of having his contract torn up following his third alcoholrelated incident this year.

Ferry runs aground after captain stuck in toilet

With Todd Carney's Sydney Roosters career firmly in the balance, coach Brian Smith says he will not select the troubled Dally M Medallist again this season.
As Carney spent his second straight week confined to the sidelines, the Roosters chalked up a second successive victory on Saturday, scoring three tries in the final eight minutes to beat Cronulla 36-25 in a dramatic clash at the Sydney Football Stadium. "But when it comes down to it, every person at the Geelong footy club will do the right thing for the team." Scott confirmed injured young forward-ruckman Nathan Vardy will definitely not play again this year, but says there are still numerous players pushing for limited spots as tall forwards or in the ruck. Montana dog becomes local celebrity for his math skills

Labrador Retrievers are known for their hunting skills and friendly dispositions, but Beau, a black Lab who lives in Montana, is winning acclaim for his math abilities.
Owner David Madsen says if he tells Beau there are six dogs at the park and three dogs leave, and then asks him how many are left, the dog replies: "Woof, woof, woof." Beau has achieved a degree of celebrity for his counting skills, becoming a star on visits to shops, restaurants and cabins in the Flathead Lake resort in Montana where the Madsen family spends summers. "He counts, he adds and subtracts, he can do some division and has memorized square roots," Madsen said. Although a dog with math skills better than plenty of humans seems incredible, the local fire chief says he vouches for the dog's talents. "Dave will say, 'What's two and three?' Then the dog will go, 'Bark, bark ... bark, bark, bark,'" said Chris Ricciardi, chief of the Finley Point-Yellow Bay, M o n t a n a F i r e Department. He said the dog performs impromptu demonstrations at his family's restaurant, Ricciardi's, near Flathead Lake. "This dog is amazing," the fire chief said. Madsen, a retired executive, adopted the puppy a dozen years ago and began teaching him math basics when he showed signs of being intelligent. As a puppy, Beau invented games and crafted intricate strategies to avoid capture, he said. "I've had dogs all my life, but this dog is different. He's super smart," Madsen said. He taught Beau to count using dog biscuits, laying out a handful and rewarding the dog when the number of his barks corresponded to the number of treats. "He caught on that rewards were associated with the correct number of barks," Madsen said. The dog had a chance at nationwide fame when he auditioned in Savannah, Georgia for the "Stupid Pet Tricks" segment on the Late Show with David Letterman." Beau didn't make the cut, his performance and he became the talk of the town. Madsen, who says his canine calculator is accurate about 85 percent of the time, said he was not signaling the dog in any fashion and has allowed others to quiz Beau in his absence. Brandon Bretz, manager of Bretz RV and Marine in Missoula, Montana, said he recently watched Beau in action. "A group of us were standing there and Dave asked Beau, 'How many girls are here?' There were two and Beau barked twice," Bretz said. "Next, Dave asked, 'How many boys?' Beau barked five times even though there were only four guys. "Then it dawned on us. Beau is a boy, and he was counting himself," he said, adding that he has booked Beau as guest speaker next spring for his company's annual customer appreciation barbecue. "There's no trick to Beau's tricks. That dog is on the up and up," Bretz said.

Mooney announces retirement

Mooney said. "Five or six weeks ago I wasn't saying that, but the past month I've felt as good as I have in 18 months. "I'm confident that at my best, I'm still a good enough player to play." Mooney says having seen Hawthorn star Shane Crawford finish his career with a premiership in 2008, at the Cats' expense, he is seeking a similar farewell. "Hopefully I can be the next Crawf and get mine," he said. "I think there's maybe another couple of boys that might be [announcing their retirements] in the next couple of weeks as well, so it would be nice if a few of us went out with another one." Cats coach Chris Scott says at his best, Mooney remains among the Cats' best dozen players, but it is harder to say where fitness.

Geelong forward Cameron Mooney is eyeing a fairytale finish to his career, after confirming this will be his final season.
The 31-year-old, who has had his season heavily restricted by a chronic knee injury, says retirement was an easy decision, given his physical condition. But the three-time premiership player is confident he can still play a major part in the Cats' push for another flag this year. "The body is as good now as it has been in about 18 months,"

Sylvia hit with two-match ban

The AFL season looks over for Melbourne midfielder Colin Sylvia, who faces a two-match ban after the match review panel's ruling on Monday.
Sylvia was charged with rough conduct over his high hit on Richmond defender Jayden Post during the Demons' seven-point loss on Sunday. He cannot reduce the ban with a guilty plea. Sylvia's teammate Aaron Davey has been offered a onematch ban if he makes an early guilty plea to striking Richmond's Mitch Morton. And Essendon could well weigh up its swag of injuries when deciding whether to contest a one-match ban against midfielder Heath Hocking that would keep him out until the AFL finals. Hocking was slapped with the suspension by the match review panel on Monday for a weekend sling tackle on West Coast's Daniel Kerr. If he accepts the ban, he will miss the Bombers' last homeand-away match against Port Adelaide at Docklands on Sunday. And it would mean two

weeks without football for Hocking, with the Bombers having the bye the week before the finals which they look certainties to make if they beat lowly Port. Hocking's absence would cause further issues for the Bombers going into the match. Forward Stewart Crameri is set to have surgery on the shoulder he injured against the be decided.

A dream run at the Ipswich 300 has Craig Lowndes in sight of a first V8 Supercars championship in 12 years.
But the round became a nightmare for Holden team-mate Jamie Whincup. Lowndes, 37, turned back the clock by completing a clean sweep of all three races at Queensland Raceway last weekend after claiming Sunday's 65-lap event. The Holden veteran finished more than a second ahead of Tim Slade with fellow Ford young gun Shane van Gisbergen third. Lowndes - and a pit crew howler - did some major damage to Whincup's series lead after it all went pear-shaped for the Holden star despite qualifying second fastest for Sunday's 200km event. Incredibly Whincup missed the start of the race when he pitted with throttle problems in the warmup lap after an engine cover was inexplicably left in his car by his crew. And when he finally got on the track as the field completed the

Lowndes, who last won a championship in 1999, notched his 80th career win last Sunday just nine behind all-time leader Skaife. Whincup's team boss Roland Dane was livid when he discovered the crew gaffe was behind his champion driver's dramas. "It did happen and it is not a good thing," master of understatement Dane said when asked if the cover had been left on, choking the engine. "I am not happy. "Those things happen. We will get on with it." It was the last thing Dane would have wanted, especially after the team boss had dared a Ford rival to "lift their game" ahead of the Ipswich round. Slade appeared to answer the challenge, placing second, third and second respectively in Ipswich's three races last weekend in a career-best round for the 26-yearold. Holden has already secured the manufacturer's title with six rounds remaining.

T h e A F L h a s reassured debt-ridden Port Adelaide it has a p l a c e i n t h e competition despite woeful results on and off the field. The AFL commission met Port's board as the club spirals towards its first wooden spoon and fourth consecutive year of heavy financial loss.
With reported losses approaching $6.25 million since 2008, Port has been gifted $9 million to survive the next three years. AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou says Port's predominantly young players have been "thrown to the wolves" by first-year coach Matthew Primus. Primus' painful rebuilding has returned just two wins and, this season, the club has recorded its two lowest home crowds. But Demetriou says the $9 million donation from the AFL and Port's licence holder, the SANFL, will ensure the club

Mark Haysman's resignation seven weeks ago and grim finances mean the club is among the league's lowest spenders on the football department. "They have improved their board substantially ... they are going about the right process to appoint a CEO," Demetriou said. "They want to invest further in their football department to put some support around Matthew Primus. "I think they have got some strategic imperatives around building their balance sheet which are very encouraging. "The Port Adelaide balance sheet is actually pretty good compared to a lot of our other clubs." But Demetriou concedes Port, for the fourth successive year, will post a financial loss. "They will report a loss but you have got to remember a $3 million injection has gone into the football club from the SANFL and AFL, so that reduces their loss ... we are not asking for that to be paid back," he said.

Whincup drove like a demon to somehow finish 10th before ending up in a sandtrap after coming into contact with Holden's Rick Kelly. Lowndes will fancy his chances of overtaking Whincup and adding a fourth driver's championship to his glittering resume as the series now heads into the endurance rounds - his specialty. The five-time Bathurst champion dominated the rounds last year with Mark Skaife, and will again team up with the five-time

Konrads medals go under hammer

Australian swimming legend John Konrads has netted more than $100,000 in an auction of his sporting medals and memorabilia. Konrads, 69, had said before the auction that the decision to sell was not easy, but something he needed to do to close a chapter in his life. T h e s w i m m e r, w h o became Australia's youngest male Olympian when selected as a reserve for the 1956 Melbourne Games at the age of 14, was "thrilled" by the results of the sales, according to Charles Leski, whose company auctioned off the goods in Melbourne on Thursday. While some items easily exceeded the sales reserves,
including a collection of scrapbooks that sold for $6,000, plus a 20 per cent buyer's premium and GST, others did not net as much as hoped. Konrad's Olympic medal collection - including a gold and two bronze medals from the 1960 Rome Olympics - raised only $24,750, well below estimates. His gold medal, which was stolen from his Melbourne home and not recovered until 25 years later when a woman tried to sell it to an American sports enthusiast, went for only $11,250. The single highest item was a group of documents including Konrad's diaries and log books, which went under the hammer for $15,000, double the estimated sale price. Mr Leski says while Konrads was one of Australia's best ever swimmers, it was a long time since his success in the pool and buyers would probably pay more for sporting memorabilia of a modern-day great like Ian Thorpe. "Not everyone remembers John Konrads and how amazing his career was," he said. Most of the goods purchased were bought by institutions to archive and preserve the photographs and documents, but some collectors also picked up items, including his 1964 Olympic blazer for $575, official team dressing gown for $950 and a waterproof jacket also from the 1964 Tokyo Games for $115.

Ogier pilots Citroen to landmark win

French driver Sebastien Ogier won the ninth leg of the World Rally Championship, the Rally of Germany, to give Citroen a record-breaking 78th win in the sport.
The Citroen driver beat series leader and compatriot Sebastien Loeb, also in a Citroen, to record his sixth career win, while Spaniard Dani Sordo in a Mini was third. Ogier's victory - which saw him move into second place in the standings 25 points adrift of his team-mate - ended a run of eight successive wins in the race by seven-time world champion Loeb. Loeb - who recorded the first of his 66 career wins to date in this rally in 2002 - did however have the consolation of winning the race-ending super-special stage which gives extra points. Ogier - who had been annoyed on Friday when he had been ordered by team chiefs to stay behind Loeb - said he was undaunted by the points gap between him and his compatriot. "As long as there is a mathematical chance of winning the world title, I will continue to believe in it," he said. "Sebastien Loeb is driving fast, he is consistent, and he doesn't often make mistakes. "He is always on the podium but there are still four rallies remaining and many things can still happen." The 10th leg of the 13-race series is in Australia from September 8-11.

survived. "We reassured the Port Adelaide Football Club that they have the total support of the AFL and again reiterated that they are a very important and vital part of our competition," Demetriou said. "We will do everything we can to help them rebuild their football club, together with the SANFL. "They should put at the bottom of their list of worries the financial situation at the club because we have assured that through the financial package." Demetriou says the AFL supported a revival plan detailed by the Port board on Monday. Port remains without a chief executive officer following he club is among the league's lowest
