Tutorial (week 10)

Engineering Mechanics (statics) (MEE1EMS)
Equilibrium in three dimensions
1. The shear leg derrick is used to haul the 200-kg net of fish onto the dock. Determine
the compressive force along each of the legs AB and CB and the tension in the winch
cable DB. Assume the force in each leg acts along its axis.

Answer: (FAB=2.52 KN, FCB=2.52 KN, FBD=3.64 KN)

2. Determine the force acting along the axis of each of the three struts needed to support
the 500-kg block.
Answer: (FB=19.2 KN, FC=10.4 KN, FD=6.32 KN)

3. The lamp has a mass of 15 kg and is supported by a pole AO and cables AB and AC. If
the force in the pole acts along its axis, determine the forces in AO, AB, and AC for
equilibrium.

4. Determine the force in each cable needed to support the 500-lb load.
Answer: (FCD= 625 lb , FCA=FCB=F=198 lb)

5. The joint of a space frame is subjected to four member forces. Member OA lies in the
plane and member OB lies in the plane. Determine the forces acting in each of the
members required for equilibrium of the joint.
Answer: (F1= 0 , F2=311 lb, F3=238 lb)
