PENGANTAR LIMNOLOGI
LIMNOLOGY:
Past, Present and Future

Limnology is the study of fresh or saline waters which are

contained within continental boundaries.

Together with the closely related sciences of Oceanography

 they cover all aquatic ecosystems
Past
Although limnological observations have a
long history, they only evolved into a distinct
science during the last two centuries,
when the inventions of the microscope, the
silk plankton-net, and the thermometer
began to provide data which showed that
inland waters were microscosms of life with
a distinctive structure.
Present

Limnology plays a role in the decision-

making process for problems of dam
construction, pollution control, and
fish and wildlife enhancement.
Future
An important goal of education in
limnology is to increase the number of
people who, although not full-time
limnologists, can understand and apply
its general concepts to a broad range of
related dicipliner.
The science of limnology embraces
lakes, streams, rivers, and estuaries
as well as a host of microhabitats which
are often overlooked by the casual
observer.
These microhabitats include
springs, old watering trough,
tree holes, and even the unique
environments formed in a
abandoned cans or in the water-
and enzyme-filled cavities of
insectivorous pitcher plants
