What is Social Studies?

- The integrated study of the social sciences and


humanities to promote civic competence.

- The primary purpose of social studies is to help young


people develop the ability to make informed and
reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a
culturally diverse, democratic society in an
interdependent world.

What is Civic Competence?

- It is the person’s ability to serve as a productive,


contributing community member.

- Examples of a civically competent person:

* obey the law and understand why these laws exist


and the consequences for breaking them

* vote during elections; research the beliefs and

platforms of each candidate and make a choice that


can benefit the individual and the greater community
What is Civic Competence?

* be gainfully employed; apply for and maintain


employment in a position for which a person is
qualified

* balance a personal budget; pay bills, use credit


wisely, and save for the future

* exist amicably in a neighborhood; maintain a home

What is Social Studies?

- The study of people in relation to each other and to their


world

- It enables students to develop an understanding of who


they are, what they want to become and the society on
which they want to live in

Why is Social Studies important?

ü Better reading and learning –they are asked to use


analysis, critical thinking, and writing to show
understanding when teachers give the reading materials
in context

ü Citizen responsibilities and values – Students need an


understanding of history, political science, culture and all
humanities to be able to understand why it is important
to be a good citizen

Why is Social Studies important?

ü Cultural understanding – we need students to learn


about, understand, and appreciate cultural differences if
we expect them to have meaningful interactions with
people of all backgrounds in the future

ü Economic education – by learning economics, young


people understand how their financial decisions have an
impact on their future, as well as the future of society
