QUARTER 3 – GENERAL BIOLOGY 2

NAME: ASHANTI P. GARCIA GRADE AND SECTION: 11 – STEM D

TEACHER: MA’AM RAQUEL DE CASTRO SCORE:
WEEK 3 TOPICS:
LESSON 2.3 : Descent with Modification by Natural Selection
LESSON 2.4 : Evolutionary Thought

WEEK3WRITTENWORK

I. MODIFIED TRUE OR FALSE (10points)

Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is true. If the statement is false, underline the word
which makes it wrong and write the correct word on the space provided.

American_1. The primary mission of the voyage was to chart poorly known stretches of the
South African coastline.

_TRUE___2. In the temperate regions, the species resembled closely the species of the tropical
regions of South America rather than the corresponding species of the temperate regions in
Europe.

Modification__3. Evolution can be defined by Darwin’s phrase descent with diversification.

TRUE______4. The Origin of Species Wallace's book proposed that evolution occurs by natural
selection

TRUE______5. In the Darwinian view, the history of life is like a tree with branches representing
life’s diversity.

II. TESTING YOUR UNDERSTANDING (45points)

You will answer the following questions:

1. Explain in your own words the main components of Darwin’s theory of evolution.

The main components of Darwin’s theory of evolution are variation, inheritance, and reproduction and
population growth. Based on my understanding, the main components of Darwin's theory of evolution are
that individuals of a species are not exactly equivalent, that the more offspring are born that can really
stay alive, that traits are passed down through generations, and that organisms that survive will be
subjected to evolutionary processes. His theory sets about explaining the progressive changes that occur
within species down the generations, as well as the success of all individuals

2. How does the concept of descent with modification explain both the unity and diversity of life?

In my understanding the idea is that it evolved from ancient inheritors that modified the original ancestor.

3. Why do traits have to be heritable in order for evolution by natural selection to occur?
For them pass the traits from next generation and to aim the common traits under selection so that it will
be heritable.

WEEK3PERFORMANCETASK

Historical Development of Evolutionary Thought

The recognition that species change over time, as well as the perceived understanding of how
such processes work, has its roots in antiquity, in the ideas of the ancient Greeks, Romans, and
Chinese, as well as in medieval Islamic science. In 1852, the English philosophe Herbert
Spencer used the term "theory of evolution" to denote both cosmic and biological changes from
"homogeneity" to "heterogeneity." Until the Descent of Man, Darwin did not use this specific
term to describe his theory (1871). Because of the broad history of these theories prior to the
Origin of Species, the term "transformism," which became popular in French biological sources
around 1835, will be used to designate the theory of species in this article. It has begun to focus
on species variability, and the emergence of paleontology with the concept of extinction. In the
early nineteenth century, Jean-Batiste Lamarck proposed the first fully formed theory of
evolution transmutation. In 1858, Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace published a new
evolutionary theory that is detailed in Darwin's book On the Origin of Species (1859). Darwin,
unlike Lamarck, proposed common descent and a branching tree of life, which meant that two
very different species could have shared a common ancestor however Wallace did not have the
same advantages in life as Darwin more importantly, he began corresponding with Darwin after
attending various scientific published papers. Darwin's theory was based on the concept of
natural selection and incorporated evidence from animal husbandry, biogeography, geology,
morphology, and embryology. Darwin thought that environmental effects that altered
characteristics would alter gem mules, which would then be passed down to offspring.
Evolutionary biology has had a significant impact not only on traditional branches of biology, as
well as on other fields of study.
