NAME: ROOM:

TRANSCRIPTION to TRANSLATION

Inherited characteristics, such as hair color, structure of eye, blood type and so on, are
determined by genes. Genes are sequences of DNA molecules that determine the structure of
polypeptides. Polypeptides are the building blocks of protein and are made up of amino acids joined
together. The sequences of nucleotides in DNA determines the sequence of amino acids in the
polypeptides, and this the structure of the proteins.

DNA directs the protein synthesis by containing the needed information in its nitrogenous
bases. In this activity you will simulate the mechanism of protein synthesis. This procedure will help
you determine the traits inherited by fictitious organism called FABDEC. This organism, whose cells
contain only one chromosome, is a member of the Kingdom Animalia. A FABDEC chromosome is made
up of six genes (A, B, C, D, E and F). Each of these genes is responsible for a certain trait.

Objective:
1. Determine the traits of a particular chromosome.
2. Determine the characteristics of an organism through these traits

Materials:
pen and crayons

Procedure:

1. Transcribe the DNA code indicated in each gene (Gene A-F) by writing down the correct sequence
of mRNA nucleotides complimentary to the DNA code.
2. Translate the mRNA code in each gene (Gene A-F) by writing down the correct sequence of tRNA
nucleotides complimentary to the mRNA code.
3. Using Table 1, determine the Amino Acid Number for each mRNA codon for all the genes. Then
write down the amino acid sequence on the space provided in each gene.
4. Then locate the amino acid sequence in Table 2. Write down the trait corresponding the amino acid
for each gene on the space provided.
5. Using all the inherited traits you gathered, make a sketch of how the fictitious organism FABDEC
will look like.
