Eric: Hello. I’m Eric Maduro and welcome to the show. This week the nominees for the
unique ‘CoolTube’ awards were announced. Aimed at discovering the world’s coolest
social media superstars, these awards got us thinking - what exactly is cool?
Cathy: Cool? That’s a hard one! In a way, I think cool is just being yourself. It’s about
being comfortable with who you are – which isn’t always easy!
Tom: To be cool, it’s really important not to care about being cool. But that’s really
hard! I mean, most people care about that kind of thing!
Sara: I generally think that cool means different things to different people, so it
changes all the time. That’s why you shouldn’t take it too seriously. If you’re not cool
now just wait a few years!
Eric: Today, we’re meeting one of the CoolTube nominees, the highly-respected social
media star Albany Summers. But before we do, let’s hear her thoughts on being cool.
Albany: Hi guys! So... apparently, I’m cool, which is weird! As some of you might
already know, I’m one of the nominees for a ’CoolTube’ award. So firstly, I want to say
a big thank you to all of you! I have no doubt that you’re the ones who really deserve
the award. But secondly, I want to say – what?! If you know my Back in School videos,
you’ll know for certain that I was not cool! Back then, it felt like cool meant popular or
good-looking. ’Cool’ people wore the same clothes, had the same expensive gadgets
and liked the same music as everybody else. I definitely wasn’t cool – I was a math
geek! But then I did a little research and found out that coolness is hard to define! I
mean, first it just meant ’not warm’ then, in the 1920s, jazz musicians used it to
describe something or someone they liked. From then on, ’cool’ changed as fashions
changed. And it feels as though it’s changing again. Now it seems like cool is about
being yourself – and I think that’s pretty cool!
Eric: And I’m delighted to welcome Albany to the show!
Albany: Thanks for having me.
Eric: OK, let me see if I got this right. The world thinks you’re cool, but you think you’re
definitely not. Doesn’t that make you more cool?
Albany: I’m not so sure! It’s difficult. I tend not to use the word ’cool’ very often. It
suggests other people are ’uncool’ and I’m totally against describing people that way!
Eric: But your videos are very popular.

Albany: Yeah, but I definitely don’t think that’s because I’m cool. I tend to think it’s
because I’m warm! It’s always really important to build a personal connection with the
viewer.
Eric: And it’s definitely worked! You now have over 2 million subscribers! I mean
you’re worldfamous!
Albany: Not bad for a geeky high school kid, I guess.
Eric: Not bad at all! And we’ll find out more about how you went from a geeky high
school kid to a social media sensation right after this break.

Eric: Hello and welcome back to the show. We’re speaking to Albany Summers. She’s
been nominated for a ’CoolTube’ award and her YouTube channel has over 2 million
subscribers. Albany, becoming famous so quickly must be life-changing. Did you expect
to be so successful?
Albany: No, definitely not – not in my wildest dreams! I mean, I just create videos
about my everyday life. Of course, I hoped that my friends and co-workers would
watch them and give them a thumbs-up. But when my channel hit 10,000 subscribers, I
knew I was on to something, so I just decided to keep going.
Eric: And why do you think your channel is attracting so many viewers?
Albany: It’s hard to tell. It might be that my videos are natural and unrehearsed.
There’s no acting, no camera crew, and there are no special effects – it’s literally just
me so it feels as though I’m friends with my viewers.
Eric: And some people now describe you as a ’social media influencer’. What is that?
Albany: I’m really not sure about that label! Basically, if you have a lot of followers you
can use social media to talk about trends, brands or products you believe in. For
example, I mentioned a brand of soap I love made by a really forward-thinking
company. I didn’t think anything of it but then the company contacted me and said we
should do business together.
Eric: And will you?
Albany: Absolutely, but only for things like that. Things I really identify with. It could
allow me to produce these videos full-time and that’s what I’m passionate about!
Eric: Sounds like a dream job and leads me to my next question. What advice would
you give to someone who wants to do what you do?
Albany: Don’t expect instant success – it can be slow-moving at first and it can feel as if
nobody is watching but stay with it. Always be open-minded too. There are lots of
opportunities out there, but they might take you by surprise. The last thing – and this
is probably the most important – always be yourself.
Eric: Very useful advice. Thank you, Albany.
Albany: Thanks, Eric.
Eric: You can vote for Albany at the CoolTube awards and there’s a link to her videos
on our website. But from us, that’s all for today. Thanks for watching and goodbye!

3B – Interview Part 1
Tasha: Hello and welcome to the show! I’m Tasha Harris. Today, we’re talking about
the importance of place. Now, we all have our own little hideaways. Those special
places, where we feel totally comfortable and relaxed. For some it’s a cafe, for others
it’s a park. It might even be a library. But wherever it is, it’s somewhere we feel safe.
Where’s yours?
Cathy: My garden! That’s where I go whenever I’m annoyed, usually when I argue,
sorry ‘discuss things’, with my husband. It has a very calming effect.
Rich: I like to avoid going to any busy places. I remember when I was young I always
went to the park. I was disgusted when they turned it into a mall!
Sara: I have a lot of safe spaces. Places affect me a lot. If I’m feeling very sensitive I
need somewhere quiet. If I’m angry, I need somewhere loud.
Tasha: These hideaways are important. According to psychologists, we’re all supposed
to have one. Now programmer David Bard has developed an app to help us find them.
So, David – do you have somewhere you go to get away from it all?
David: Oh, absolutely! Everybody really ought to have somewhere like that. Mine is
Target Field home to the Minnesota Twins baseball team!
David: In the modern world, when we’re not at home, we’re at work. Most of us spend
at least eight hours of our day at work. And many workplaces can be unfriendly,
uncomfortable and, above all, stressful. Most experts advise that we’re really not
supposed to live like this. That’s why we all need somewhere to escape to. It can be
somewhere quiet or somewhere you can get the social interaction you might not get
at work. Psychologists call this the ’third place.’
David: Now, that’s an excellent question! The short answer is that it’s different for
everybody. You really can’t tell somebody what their safe space should be. It can be
many things. It doesn’t even have to be a particularly quiet or peaceful place. One of
my colleagues, for example, told me hers is at an airport and I totally get that! Sure,
airports are busy and noisy but that doesn’t matter to her. She doesn’t mind the noise,
she loves the excitement! At an airport, there’s always the possibility of going
somewhere new! They can make you feel hopeful, and this is an important emotion to
have when you’re in your ‘third place.’

Tasha: And how else should you feel when you’re there?
David: Again, it differs from person to person, but the most important thing is that you
don’t have to be there. At home and at work we all have, you know, responsibilities.
You can’t just come and go whenever you want. If you do, you’d better be prepared to
lose your job or your partner! But in our third place we can go four times a week, or
once a month. There’s no obligation.
David: Oh, around once every two weeks – whenever the Twins play. Except when the
season's over – then I have to find somewhere new. That’s where my app comes in!
Tasha: Oh yes, of course – we’ll talk about that in part two. Please join us then!
2. Which of these places does the host NOT mention as an example of a special place?

3B – Interview part 2
Tasha: Welcome back. I’m here with David Bard, creator of the MyThirdPlace app. David, we
know third places are psychologically important. But why do we need an app?
David: Long before I created the app, I knew I had to do something to protect these types of
spaces. In the past, there were always public places, like village squares, town halls, and city
parks. Somewhere you could go that wasn’t your home or your workplace. We call this a ’third
place.’ But nowadays they’re a bit more difficult to find. And don't we all want to keep our
'special places' to ourselves? Of course, I realize there are still town squares and public parks,
but they aren’t separate from work or home. Go outside and you’ll notice that almost
everybody has a device that allows their boss, their partner or their children to contact them...
wherever they are. This has a huge effect on people because it’s so much more difficult to
escape responsibilities and obligations. This affects everyone because a third place must be
obligation-free! Wouldn't you want to be free of your boss or even your mother-inlaw?!
David: Exactly! If you can’t beat them, join them! Seriously though, the idea came to me when
I had to work in New York for six months. I’m from Minneapolis and I know all my favorite
hideaways here, but in New York I was lost. Everybody knows that New York is busy but for me
that wasn’t the problem. It was all just so unfamiliar! How do you find a hideaway in a city of
over 8 million people? I did what everybody does – I went online. I could find websites for the
best food, coffee, even the best sandwich, but that didn’t help me find somewhere that felt
special to me, personally. So, that’s when I invented the app.
Tasha: And how does it work? Especially when these places are so personal? Isn't it hard for an
app to get to know us as individuals?
David: That’s the million-dollar question! I don’t claim that MyThirdPlace can find you your
third place. Only you can do that so there’s no point pretending. But it can recommend places.
It does this through an algorithm that assesses your personality type. First, you build your
profile. You enter your personal information and answer a series of questions. Then the app
gives you a choice of places. You just choose the ones you like most. The app uses this
information to suggest safe spaces near you. You can even choose the city too. So, right now
my suggested safe spaces in London are Bob’s Cafe in Peckham and The Resthouse in
Greenwich.
Tasha: That’s fantastic! I’ve been living here for seven years and I’m still not sure where my
third place is!
Tasha: That’s it for this week. Thanks for watching and see you next time!
2. Why does David say public places and work are not so separate any longer?

Abigail: Like, say your boss is rude to you, but you can’t lose your job, so you keep quiet.
You leave the office and as soon as someone cuts you off, you take it out on the other
driver, who has nothing to do with your problem!
Ben: Hmm... that makes a lot of sense. My father is the sweetest man you’ll ever meet,
but he becomes a whole different person when he gets stuck in traffic!
Abigail: And this sort of behavior is learned too, isn’t it? Children see their parents yelling
at other drivers and they think it’s normal.
Ben: I hadn’t thought of that.
Abigail: Not to mention movies like Fast and Furious, which tend to show aggressive
driving as something exciting... almost positive!

Abigail: No. She apologized. She said she’d just been fired so she wasn’t thinking straight.

Tasha: Hello and welcome to the show. I’m Tasha Harris. In recent years, extreme weather
events have increased. Hurricanes, floods, heatwaves – the impact of climate change has
been felt by people all over the world.
Rich: We went to New York last winter and it snowed the entire time. This resulted in our
flights being cancelled so we had to stay an extra week. It sounds great, but we were
actually pretty miserable.
Tasha: Last year our whole street was flooded. We’re still repairing some of the damage
and it’s absolutely exhausting.
Cathy: My sister lives in Australia and her house was damaged in a wildfire. Luckily, they
weren’t at home but the damage was so bad that they’re desperate to find somewhere
else to live.
Tasha: As these stories become increasingly common, it affects all of us. This is the subject
of the book Under the Weather and its author, Joel Jones, joins us today from Washington.
Hello Joel.
Joel: Hi Tasha.
Tasha: So, is climate change affecting the way we feel?
Joel: Oh, without a doubt. Weather always impacts mood, but extreme weather can be so
devastating that it can influence every aspect of our lives. This has huge consequences for
our emotional well-being.
Tasha: In what way?
Joel: Well, severe weather events can be very traumatic. They can lead to feelings of
stress and anxiety. Obviously, it’s very distressing for those involved but it has such a
domino effect that even people who have never suffered a snowstorm or a hurricane are
becoming increasingly pessimistic. In a recent survey, 64% of Americans said they were
worried about the climate, with 22% saying they were very worried. And almost
everybody agrees, there’s so little we can do that it’s definitely going to cause bigger
problems in the future.
Tasha: But in your book, there are some positives.
Joel: Yes, climate change has already resulted in many terrible disasters. But these
disasters can lead to acts of extraordinary kindness. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused New
York to shut down. It was so severe in some areas that people’s homes were badly
damaged. They had no access to food, clothes or electricity. But all over the city people
were eager to help. They set up food stalls so people could eat and donated clothes so

people stayed dry. And it’s not just in this country. In Japan, people came from all over the
country to help rebuild affected cities after the 2011 tsunami. And in 2016 in Ecuador,
people left their jobs and families to work in emergency camps and hospitals. Of course,
these acts of kindness don’t solve the problem, but they are so important because they
inspire others. They show how people can bring a positive mindset to a negative situation.
Tasha: But do you think a disaster is needed to make people think this way?
Joel: I hope not. It would make such a difference if we could work this way before disaster
strikes rather than afterwards. If we could, I think we’d make big changes happen.
Tasha: Even on a major issue like climate change?
Joel: Absolutely! But also in our everyday life. The weather has such a strong influence on
our mood but that doesn’t mean we can’t do things to help ourselves!
Tasha: Let’s talk more about that in part two. Please join us then!

5B – Interview – P2
Tasha: Hello and welcome back. I’m here with Joel Jones, author of Under the Weather. In
part one, we looked at how global warming is changing our moods. But it isn’t just
extreme weather that influences how we feel. From severe storms to drizzly Monday
mornings, weather affects our mood every single day.
Cathy: My mood completely depends on the weather - just ask my friends! I get very
grumpy when it’s cold.
Rich: I actually like cold weather but when it rains day after day, it’s pretty miserable.
Sara: It makes such a big difference to me. The weather here really gets me down. Cold,
cloudy and wet – come on, give me some sun!
Tasha: So, Joel, does the weather change how you feel?
Joel: Oh, absolutely. I hate winter! In some parts of the US, the winters have been so cold
that people just stay indoors for months! And studies show that one in five Americans find
the winter months difficult.
In the most severe cases, people can have what’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder.
People with SAD find different seasons – most commonly winter – make them feel anxious
and on edge. But even for people who don’t have SAD, winter in a cold climate can be a
depressing time of year. It’s so cold and dark that most people don’t go outside. When
you don’t go outside, you quickly become lethargic and start to feel kind of down.
Tasha: How can you fight that?
Joel: It’s difficult. People generally find winter difficult for two reasons – there isn’t
enough light, and you don’t go outside. So, my recommendation is to get out during the
day whenever you can.
Tasha: Does that really make such a big difference?
Joel: Oh, light and being able to go outside can have such a major impact it’s influenced
entire cultures! Study after study shows that people who live in warm climates tend to be
more motivated and optimistic, which in turn makes them more passionate about life.
Tasha: Hmmm, some of our viewers might disagree. Isn’t that just a stereotype?
Joel: Yes, it is but so many scientific studies show that light stimulates our brain. There
must be some truth in it! And people who spend more time outside, exercise more too.
And exercise is good for both your physical and mental health.
Tasha: So, we should all live in warmer countries to feel more dynamic?
Joel: Not exactly but we should all try to get more exercise. Movement makes us happy
and energetic, and the lack of it makes us grumpy and lethargic.
