INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Virtual games or video games are electronic games that involve human interaction with a

user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device such as a TV screen or computer

monitor. The word video game traditionally referred to a raster display device but in the 2000’s it

implies any types of display device that can produce two or three dimensional images. Examples

of these are personal computer and video game/s consoles.

Traditional Filipino games are commonly played by children usually using native

materials or instruments. In the Philippines, due to limited resources of toys of Filipino children,

they usually came up on inventing games. This does not require anything like gadgets to be

played. It only needs the players themselves with the flexibility as human to think and act. And

thus, it makes the game much interesting and challenging.

Games could be physically played, mentally played or played by used of different

gadgets and technologies. Traditional games include the games that used more physical and

mental attributes as support and uses different native or indigenous materials. While the video

games or virtual games use gadgets and technologies to play it.

Objectives

General Objectives:

To investigate which game/s do the Filipino children nowadays prefer to play, the virtual

games or traditional Filipino games.

Specific Objectives:

To identify and understand why Filipino children nowadays mostly prefer to play virtual

games rather than traditional Filipino games.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify the factors why most of the Filipino children nowadays like to

play virtual games rather than the traditional Filipino games.

Specifically it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What were the games the respondents commonly played when they were aged 10 and

below?

2. What are the games these same respondents are playing nowadays?

3. What games, virtual or traditional Filipino games, do they most prefer to play in the

present days?

4. Why do these respondents prefer to play virtual games rather than traditional Filipino

games and vice versa?

Hypothesis

Alternative Hypothesis: Most Filipino children today prefer to play virtual games rather

than traditional Filipino games because they are now technology literate, most of them

experience fun while playing and others influenced by their peers and family.

Null Hypothesis: Most Filipino children today prefer to play traditional Filipino games

rather than virtual games because they are not technology literate, most of them experience fun

while playing and others influenced by their peers and family.

Scope and Delimitation

The study’s main focus is to investigate why most of the children nowadays like to play

virtual games rather than the traditional Filipino games. It will determine what games they

commonly played when they were young and the games they are playing nowadays. The reasons

why they play those games will also be determined through this study.the game they prefer to

play nowadays. It will be conducted from February 11 and 18 at Brgy. Sala, Tanauan City. The

respondents of this study will be randomly selected twenty (20) children aged 11&12 years old.

This study will not cover the other factor such as the respondent’s economic status, the gender,

family structure and treatments for those kids that are now addicted to virtual games.

Significance of the Study

The importance of this study is to identify the different factors that cause the respondents

to play virtual games rather than the traditional Filipino games. And also to identify if the

traditional Filipino games are still being played by Filipino children in this present days. This
will also be helpful for Philippines’ National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) in the

way that it will understand the reasons on why most of the Filipino children nowadays prefer to

play virtual games rather than traditional Filipino games. They will have more knowledge to

preserve and enrich the traditional Filipino games as part of the Philippines’ culture. Teachers

will also benefit because as the second parents of the children, the teacher will able to know and

understand the different factors why the Filipino children of this present days are more probable

to play virtual games rather than the traditional Filipino games. This information will help them

to have a better guidance to their students. Families of every Filipino child who will be able to

read this study will be knowledgeable enough about the reasons on why the Filipino

child/children prefer more to play virtual games than traditional Filipino games. And lastly the

result of this study will help the future researchers in their research on the different factors that

cause children to be more likely to play virtual games rather than the traditional Filipino games.

This may be duplicated using different materials at other localities.
