Check of the control signal to the ignition amplifier from AUDI MPFI, pin A1, A2 and A3
This is an output signal from the control unit to control ignition. The control unit emits ignition pulses,
which control the ignition amplifier. There are several possible causes of an absent signal:
• a discontinuity in the wiring or connectors.
• A defective or absent main input signal to the system such as:
- Hall sensor
- Engine speed sensor
- TDC sensor
- Ground connection
• A faulty control unit, although this is most unlikely as the failure rate for control units is very low.
1. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the
Autodiagnose Break-out Box (A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness
only. Do not reconnect the control unit.
2. Measure the resistance of the cable between ground and the ignition amplifier, pin G. Desired value: 0
Q,
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
3. Measure the resistance of the cable between the Break-out Box, pin A1/ A2/A3 and ignition amplifier,
pin 1/2/3. Desired value: 0 Q.
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
4. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box and the 64-pin adapter between the car's wiring harness and
the control unit.
5. Connect the ignition amplifier contact and check with a test lamp that pulses is received at the ignition
coil pin nr 1 (-) when the starter motor is turned over.
Possible cause of fault: Circuit-breaker (possibly ignition amplifier), ignition coil or wiring on primary
side.
Check of engine speed signal from hall sensor to AUDI MPFI, pin A5
This is an input signal to the control unit from the hall sensor; it indicates engine speed.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit.
2. Measure the resistance of the cable between the Break-out Box, pin A5 and hall sensor, pin 5 (see
workshop manual). Desired value: 0 C1
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
3. Measure the resistance of the cable between the Break-out Box, pin AlO and at the hall sensors
negative connector (-). Desired value: 0 Q,
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
4. Measure the resistance of the cable between the Break-out Box, pin A4 and at the hall sensor's positive
connector (+). Desired value: 0 Q,
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
5. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box and the 64-pin adapter between the car's wiring harness and
the control unit.
6. Start the engine and check that pulses from the hall sensor are received at the Break-out Box, pin A5.
Possible cause of fault: Hall sensor.
Check of control signal to fuel pump relay from AUDI MPFI, pinA7
This is a control signal from the control unit to the fuel pump relay. The signal is grounded to activate the
pump relay after the engine has been turned over by the starter motor. There are several possible causes
for an absent signal including:
• Discontinuity in the wiring or connectors.
• A defective or absent main input signal to the system, such as:
- Hall sensor
- TDC sensor
- Ground connection
- Power supply
- Engine speed sensor
TROUBLE-SHOOTING AUDI MPFI ___ ______________ __ LOCATING FAULTS
• Faulty control unit, although this is most unlikely as the failure rate for control units is very low.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit.
2. Measure the resistance of the cable between the Break-out Box, pin A7 and fuel pump relay pin 29/S
(see workshop manual). Desired value: 0 Q
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
3. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box and the 64-pin adapter between the car's wiring harness and
the control unit.
4. Turn on the ignition and measure the voltage between fuel pump relay, pin 28/15 and ground. Desired
value: 12 V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of control signal to lambda sensor pre-heater from AUDI MPFI, pin A8
This is an output signal from the control unit. It controls the lambda sensor’s pre-heater relay.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit.
2. Disconnect the cable from the lambda sensor relay. Measure the resistance of the cable between Break-
out Box, pin A8 and the corresponding terminal, pin 85 (see workshop manual). Desired value: 0 Q
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
3. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box and the 64-pin adapter between the car's wiring harness and
the control unit.
4. Start the engine and measure the voltage at the other terminal of the relay's connector. Desired value:
12 V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring, connector, relay or fuel pump relay.
Check of ground connection to hall sensor from AUDI MPFI, pin A10
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
2. Start the engine and measure the voltage between the Break-out Box, pin A10 and ground. Desired
value: 0 V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
Check of ground connection to coolant temperature sensor from AUDI MPFI, pin A12
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
2. Start the engine and measure the voltage between the Break-out Box, pin A12 and ground. Desired
value: 0 V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of status signal from the air conditioning system to AUDI MPFI, pin B1 and BH
This is a status signal from the air conditioning system. When it is active, the control unit will respond by
opening the LFR valve slightly to compensate for the stress.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit.
2. Measure the resistance between the Break-out Box, pin B1/B11 and the air conditioning system.
Desired value: 0 Q,
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of late gear change signal from the automatic gearbox to AUDI MPFI, pin B2
This is a status signal from the automatic gearbox to the control unit. When the automatic gearbox
changes gear, the control unit responds by reducing priming to facilitate a smoother gear change.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit.
2. Measure the resistance between the Break-out Box, pin B2 and the automatic gearbox. Desired value:
0Q
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of status signal from the automatic gearbox to sys-tem AUDI MPFI, pin B3
This is a signal that provides the control unit with information on when a gear is engaged in the drive
mode. The control unit responds by opening the LFR valve slightly to compensate for the stress.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit.
2. Measure the resistance between the Break-out Box, pin B3 and the automatic gearbox. Desired value:
0 Q,
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of throttle potentiometer's information signal to the automatic gearbox from AUDI MPFI,
pin B7
This is a signal from the control unit of the automatic gearbox. The control unit converts the throttle
potentiometer's analogue signal to a digital signal, which is then used by the automatic gearbox to
determine the points at which the gear is changed.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit,
2. Measure the resistance between the Break-out Box, pin B7 and the automatic gearbox. Desired value:
0 Q.
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of engine speed signal to revolution counter from AUDI MPFI, pin B10
This is an output signal from the control unit indicating engine speed for the car's tachometer, for
example.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit and connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
2. Start the engine and check (use oscilloscope or similar) that pulses are received at the Break-out Box,
pin B10.
Possible cause of fault: Wiring, connectors or control unit.

Check of ground connection to TDC sensor from AUDI MPFI, pin B15
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
2. Start the engine and measure the voltage between the Break-out Box, pin B15 and ground. Desired
value: 0 V Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of ground connection to engine speed sensor from AUDI MPFI, pin B17
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
2. Start the engine and measure the voltage between the Break-out Box, pin B17 and ground. Desired
value: 0 V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of signal from engine speed sensor to AUDI MPFI, pin 818
This is an input signal to the control unit from the engine speed sensor. The signal indicates engine speed
and top dead center.
1. Check the clearance between the sensor and the ring gear (see workshop manual) and that the cogs are
clean.
2. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit.
3. Measure the resistance between the Break-out Box, pin B18 and B17. Desired value: 1200 Q,
Possible cause of fault: Engine speed sensor.
4. Measure the resistance of the cable between the Break-out Box, pin B18 and the engine speed sensor,
pin 2. Desired: 0 f2
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
5. Measure the resistance of the cable between the Break-out Box, pin B17 and the engine speed sensor,
pin 1. Desired: 0 0
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
6. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box and the 64-pin adapter between the car's wiring harness and
the control unit.
7. Start or crank the engine and check that pulses from engine speed sensor are received at Break-out
Box, pin B18 (use oscilloscope or similar). If the engine does not start, the signal level is lower but will
be displayed on the oscilloscope.
Possible cause of fault: Engine speed sensor, dirt between cogs or gap between engine speed sensor and
fly-wheel.

Check of power supply to the throttle potentiometer from AUDI MPFI, pin C4
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
2. Start the engine and measure the voltage between the Break-out Box, pin C4 and C12. Desired value: 5
V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring, connectors, throttle potentiometer or control unit.

Check of ground connection to air temperature sensor from AUDI MPFI, pin C9
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
2. Start the engine and measure the voltage between the Break-out Box, pin C9 and ground. Desired
value: 0 V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of ground connection to throttle potentiometer from AUDI MPFI, pin C12
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
2. Start the engine and measure the voltage between the Break-out Box, pin C12 and ground. Desired
value: 0 V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.

Check of power supply from ignition switch (terminal 15) to AUDI MPFI, pin D4
This is an input signal to the control unit from the ignition switch. It indicates that the ignition is on.
1. Turn on the ignition and measure the voltage at the ignition coil's positive pole (terminal 15). Desired
value: 12-14 V
Possible cause of fault: Wiring, connectors or ignition switch.
2. Turn of the ignition and disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the
Autodiagnose Break-out Box (A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring
harness and the control unit.
3. Check that the fuse is not damaged. The fuse, identifiable by its yellow casing, is located next to the
control unit together with the other fuses.
4. Measure the voltage between the Break-out Box, pin D4 and Dl. Desired value: 12 V
Note
The terminal 15 supply provides the stop signal for the Multi-Tester Plus test program. This means that
an absent signal is interpreted as a stopped engine. Nevertheless, a faulty signal will be detected at the
start of the test.

Check of control signal to the injection valve from AUDI MPFI, pin D6, D7, D8, D13, D14 and
D15
This is an output signal from the control unit to the injection valve, which controls fuel metering.
1. Turn on the ignition and measure the power supply to the injection valve. Desired value: 12-14 V.
Possible cause of fault: Wiring, connectors or the main relay.
3. Check that the fuse is not damaged. The fuse, identifiable by its red casing, is located next to the
control box together with the other fuses.
2. Check the opening pulse by measuring the voltage across the injection valves with a test lamp
(measure from the rear of one of the connectors on any injector). At low rpm the lamp should flash; it
should shine with even intensity at higher rpm. If incorrect:
- disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) between the car's wiring harness and the control unit.
Repeat corresponding measurement between the Break-out Box, pin D6/D7/D8/D13/D14/D15 and D4.
3. In the case of a suspected discontinuity between AUDI MPFI, pin D6/D7/ D8/D13/D14/D15 and the
injector, make the following measurement:
- turn off the ignition and disconnect the connector from the control unit. Measure the resistance between
the Break-out Box, pin D6/D7/ D8/D13/D14/D15 and the terminal on the injector's connector (see
workshop manual). Desired value: 0 Q
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
4. Measure the resistance across each individual injector with the injector connector terminal removed
(i.e. directly on the injectors). Desired value: 17 ^
Possible cause of fault: Injector.
Note
The test is discontinued during fuel cut-off.
Injector failure can also have a mechanical cause (lining, etc.). Such faults are not registered by the
Multi-Tester Plus. In such a case, a flow check must be carried out on each injector.

Check of the control signal to the tank ventilation valve from AUDI MPFI, pin D12
This is an output signal from the control unit. It regulates the valve that ventilates the fuel tank. The value
should vary between 1 and 99 % when accelerating.
1. Disconnect the 64-pin connector from the control unit. Connect the Autodiagnose Break-out Box
(A0201-1) and the 64-pin adapter (A020243-1) to the car's wiring harness only. Do not reconnect the
control unit.
2. Disconnect the cable from the tank ventilation valve. Measure the resistance of the cable between the
Break-out Box, pin D12 and connector, pin 2 (see workshop manual). Desired value: 0 Q,
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
3. Measure the resistance of the cable between tank valve and fuel pump relay. Desired value: 0 Q,
Possible cause of fault: Wiring or connectors.
4. Measure the resistance between the valve's terminals. Desired value: 30 ^1 Possible cause of fault:
Tank ventilation valve.
