THE VICE-CHANCELLOR & PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Professor Peter Hj Vice-Chancellor and President University of South Australia

The University of South Australia is an innovative and successful institution with a 150-year history. Our teaching and research reflect the needs of modern society and reflect a balance between knowledge and application. Almost a third of our 34,000 students are citizens of other countries and we have the largest number of international students in South Australia. We also have an established presence in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. Our focus is on good teaching, experiential learning and skills that matter. We were the first university in Australia to formally state the seven core graduate qualities that employers can expect to find in any of our graduates, whatever the course and wherever it is taught. In a recent survey of our transnational students, more than 80% said they enjoyed their studies and were satisfied with their experiences. We also have a growing international research profile. UniSA specialises in research that is inspired by end-users and undertaken in collaboration with industry, government and the professions across Australia and internationally. Choosing to study at UniSA means youll earn more than just a degree. Youll graduate with an international network of colleagues, ready to progress in the profession of your choice, with the skills to make an immediate and lasting contribution on society. We look forward to welcoming you as a student.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

This program has been designed to prepare highly skilled professional engineers to meet the needs of employers in the industry. The program is delivered by staff members from the School of Electrical & Information Engineering of the University of South Australia. The program allows polytechnic graduates to upgrade their qualifications to the professional level of Bachelor of Engineering. This is achieved by specialist study in digital signal processing, computer technology, communications, micro engineering and knowledge based engineering. Students also carry out a major developmental or research project that requires the integration of the various skills developed during the course. This project is industry based. In additional to the above, graduates from the program should: Possess sufficient knowledge and skills in the field of Engineering Be immediately useful to industry as professional engineers with specialist knowledge in the areas of Engineering Be able to maintain and manage engineering systems and facilities UniSA's continued close work with industry and the professions has helped us develop some of the most relevant programs and courses in Australia. The core objective of these is to develop in students a unique set of graduate qualities - qualities that employers look for. These qualities are distinguishing characteristics of our graduates. Graduates of UniSA: operate effectively with and upon a body of knowledge are prepared for lifelong learning are effective problem solvers can work both autonomously and collaboratively are committed to ethical action and social responsibility communicate effectively demonstrate an international perspective

It may be completed through offshore learning mode with the following schedule.

The advanced standing Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic Engineering)* program consists of 16 courses (including a final year project). The program provides a total of 320 hours of seminars and workshops; or 20 hours per course. Seminars are fully conducted by visiting lecturers from the University. The curriculum is taught over 6 terms. Classes are generally held in the evening to suit the busy schedules of program participants. The projects will run concurrently with the courses. Project Briefing Sessions will be held during the Transnational Workshop. Honours students will undertake Project 1H and Project 2H. The majority of final year undergraduate engineering projects are sponsored by industry, thus increasing relevance and improving the quality of the graduates. Many design projects are conducted within the School's research concentrations, familiarising students with modern research practices. Over fifty scholarships and prizes are available every year to students who distinguish themselves academically and also in their personal development.

* Applicants may apply for additional credits by demonstrating that they satisfy the prior learning credit requirements (up to a maximum of 4 courses). This will be assessed by the University upon submission of details of additional studies or experience that have developed relevant competencies.

Two Weeks Practical Workshop

In addition to the seminars students will be required to attend a compulsory two weeks engineering workshop at the University Students must attend the workshop after the completion of at least four courses and prior to commencing their project
