THE STORY OF A LETTER by Carlos Bulosan - PLOT

1. EXPOSITION
Answer: Carlos Bulosan and his father live in a province and they are farmers. They are also
being surrounded by mountains. He has two brothers, Berto and Nicasio. His brother Berto who
ran away from home was in California when he wrote a letter for his father in English.
Unfortunately, both Carlo and his father are both illiterate.
2. RISING ACTION
Answer: Since both father and son couldn’t read, they asked numerous times for help. It
includes the priest who died from overeating, his brother Nicasio who suddenly had gone to
America, and a teacher who only knew Spanish and their dialect. These unfortunate
circumstances made them hopeless.
3. CLIMAX
Answer: When young Carlos grew up, he suddenly wanted to explore other places but couldn’t
go because his father was getting old. However, his desire to left the village came impossible
when their farm was taken away from them. He went first to Baguio and he was discovered by
a romantic painter and took him to Manila as her model. Then he went to America after saving
enough money. Something happened that made him stay in hospital bed for two years but he
used that time to read books in hunger while a nurse helped him. End of the first year when he
remembered the letter of his brother Berto so he wrote a letter to his father asking him to send
his brother’s letter and it arrived six months later. When he received his brother’s letter, he
translated it into their dialect for his father to understand and then he sent it back with the
original.
4. FALLING ACTION
Answer: Fortunately, after years of staying in the hospital he finally got better. He decided to
explore the city of Los Angeles and find his two brothers. He found his brother Berto in a beer
tavern and his brother Nicasio in Delano.
5. RESOLUTION
Answer: His landlord gave him the letter of his brother and its translation with a note from the
postmaster of the town that his father had died years before. He read the letter which was the
reason he desired to be away from their village. He held the letter while laughing and choking
with tears and read the letter about Berto describing the America and sharing it to his father.
