19 (a) Explain the concept of drift velocity. [1 Mark]


(b) Copper has a molar mass of 63.5 ×10−3 kg and a density of 8900 kgm-3. A copper
wire of radius 1.8 mm is carrying a current of 2.5 A. Assuming that each copper
atom contributes one free electron, calculate the drift velocity of the electrons in the
copper wire. [6 Marks]
(c) A Copper rod carries a current of 12 A. The cross sectional area of the rod is 16
mm2 and its length is 40 mm. The resistivity of the copper is 1.69 ×10−8 Ωm.
(i) Calculate the density of the current in the copper rod. [2 Marks]
(ii) Calculate the resistence of the copper rod. [2 Marks]

(d) A uniform cylindrical conductor of length 15 cm and cross-sectional area 42 mm 2


Carries a current of 2.4 A. Calculate the current density in the conductor. [2 Marks]
(e) Sketch a graph to show the current density, J varies with the distance along the

20 (a) A power source produces an alternating voltage V is given by V =156 sin120 πt
where V is in volts and t in seconds.
(i) Determine the frequency of the alternating voltage. [3 Marks]
(ii) Define r.m.s. voltage. [1 Mark]
(iii) Determine the r.m.s. voltage. [2 Marks]

(b) A power source with r.m.s. voltage 240 V and frequency 50 Hz is connected in
series to a capacitor of 4.0 μF , an Inductor 0.5 H and a resistor of 400.0 Ω is shown
in the diagram below.

(i) Determine the impedance of the circuit. [3 Marks]


(ii) Calculate the r.m.s. value of the current. [3 Marks]
(iii) Calculate the voltage across each component. [3 Marks]
