Hazardous Area Classification
Classification of Hazardous Areas
The platform classification of areas shall be as defined in accordance with the technical
criteria indicated in docume nt IP15 Area Classifica tion Code for Petroleum Installations.

Hazardous Area Classification drawings shall be produced from technical information
provided in the Safety Engineeri ng department 'Hazardous Area Report'. Electrical
equi pment designated to be installed within a designated Hazardous Area shall be
suitably ra ted for that area classification.

All electrical apparatus shall be certified according to EU directive 94/9/EC (ATEX) and
shall as a minimum be certified for Equipment Group II 2 G, gas group IIB, temperature
group T3.
Internal Areas
Electrical equipment shall be standard industrial non Ex rated equipment.
Note: Electrical equipment for the following systems shall be accepted as standard
industrial non Ex rated equipment-
Fire water (System 03), potable water (System 10), HVAC (System 12), emergency
diesel generator (System 17), sewage (System 51 ), instrument air (System 54 ), crane
(System 61).
There is no requirement for any equipment used indoors or remaining live following an
ESD trip to be certified for use in a hazardous area.
Ingress Protection
Enclosure degree of protection for equipment in Outdoor areas shall be minimum IP55.
However, HV junction boxes shall be minimum IP 56.
Equipment installed in Internal areas of the accommodation shall be minimum IP42 with
. · ihe -exte-p1ioh ·of equ1pmeiiCrequir1ng circuiated air for coofing purposes which may be
IP32. IP32 equipment shall be provided with internal assemblies that will protect from
the dust & moisture accumulation.
Electrical equipment, panels & junction boxes located in external areas shall be designed
to facilitate BOTTOM cable entry only.
5.1 General
The design shall include the LV switchboards, transformer and all necessary interfacing
and bulk electrical material, including cable and interface equipment.
The design shall include for short circuit calculations, motor starting, system stability,
load flow and protection relay studies as required to verify the functionality and protection
of the electrical system. For BF and CF, electrical equipment shall be selected based on
a maximum short circuit fault level at 11 kV of 60kA(rms) and 25kA(rms) respectively. For
EF, DC, GC and HC electrical equipment shall be selected based on a maximum short
circuit fault level at 3kV of 20kA(rms). All switchboards shall comply with MITS-15.

5.2 Transformers
A transformer shall be provided for each accommodation platform to provide normal
power to the Utility switchboard & shall be located in the respective platform Switchgear
room.
Each transformer shall be natural ventilated type, but designed for future fan cooled

Each generator shall provide 400/230 VAC, 3 Phase, 4 Wire, 50 Hz, 0.8 p.f. electrical
power, connected to the respective emergency switchboard. The emergency generator
shall automatically start on a fault free "dead bus" situation , in turn re-energising
emergency switchboa·rd & systems.
Each generator continuous rated capacity shall be determined during the detail design
phase taking into account the platform running arid starting loads plus 100kVA for future

levels do not exceed 85dB when measured at a distance of 1 metre. Each generator
engine shall be fitted with an insulated exhaust silencer system that will attenuate the
exhaust noise level to an approximate 75d8. Each exhaust shall be fitted with a Spark
Arrester and stainless steel expansion bellows. The expansion bellows shall be
positioned at the flanged joint to the roof of each enclosure.
In order to minimise the Generator package noise and vibration effects, the units shall be
located externally on cellar deck. The exhaust outlets require a location on the prevailing
downwind side of the platform.

' Each generator enclosure shall be provided with two (2) heat detectors connected to the
platform Fire & Gas panel and controlling the water mist system.
5.4 Switchboards
General
The switchboards shall comply with MITS-1 5 and shall consist of metal enclosed panels,
free standing bolted sections on a steel channel base to form one line-up. The panels
shall be front entry units with top provision for armoured cables entries. Paint finish
colour shall be as specified in MITS34.
Utilities and Emergency services switchboards shall be designed to provide switching
controls for various electrical loads. These switchboa rds shall be located in a climate
controlled room and consist of panels containing motor starters and feeder breakers for .,
non-motor loads .
All main circuit breaker controls sha ll be rated for 230V AC UPS power. I

Utility Switchboards
During normal operation the utility switchboard shall supply power to consumers at the
accommodation platform as well as the emergency switchboard. Interlocks, inter-tr.ips
and a close permissive shall be provided with the up-stream circuit breaker.
A standard fabricated busduct shall connect transformer to switchboard incoming air
circuit breaker. Switchboard design capacity for platforms DC, HC & GC shall allow for a
future load of 400A each.
Emergency Switchboard
During normal operation, the emergency switchboard shall be supplied via the utility
switchboard, during loss of main power or maintenance checks the emergency generator
shall provide power. Refer to Section 3.2.
The following equipment as a minimum shall be connected to the emergency
switchboard:

In addition to connected loads, the emergency switchboard at platforms DC, GC and HC
shall supply the respective emergency switchboards installed at platforms DA, GD and
HA. The Switchboard design capacity shall allow 300kVA for these consumers and in
addition, respectively allow for a future load of 200A each.
Synchronizing provisions shall ensure power transfer can take place without interruptions
between normal supply and emergency generator supply and visa versa.
Necessary switches, push buttons, meters, indication lamps and synchronization check
relays shall be provided for a safe and reliable operation.
Motor Control & Package Feeders
Normal Utility and Emergency services Switchboards shall be designed to incorporate
provision for switching controls for various outgoing electrical loads. The Switchboards
consist of panels containing motor starters and feeder breakers for non-motor loads.
'The motor starters shall be combination type, full voltage, non-reversing with the
following features:
• Motor circuit protectors(magnetic trip only)
• Thermal or digital overload relays
• LED Indicators (RED - Stopped : GREEN - Running : AMBER - Tripped)
• Individual control power transformers with fuse protected primary and secondary
windings.
• Two (2) Normally Open and two (2) Normally Closed spare auxiliary contacts wired to
terminal blocks in the motor starter assembly. These contacts are in addition to
contacts used to provide the START signal, space heater or for the Pilot indicator
LED's.
• Motor anti-condensation supply provisions on units 56 kW (75HP) and above. Power
shall be supplied at 230 VAC, 50 Hz, 1 phase, 2 wire from an external source and .,
switched within the respective cubicle.

Each distribution board shall be provided with a plasticised designated circuit schedule,
fitted to the inside of the panel door.
All Lighting & Small Power Circuits shall be provided with ELCB's rated 30mA. All
MCB's shall be 2 pole minimum, type 'C' unless stated otherwise.
Galley and Laundry Distribution boards
Galley and laundry equipment shall be powered from dedicated distribution boards
directly supplied without intermediate isolation.
Distribution main isolators shall be fitted with a 24V DC shunt trip, connected to the ESD
system via emergency pushbuttons at each exit of the Galley and Laundry.
Each distribution breaker (MCB) shall be provided with two or four poles, suitably rated
and 30mA ELCB type.
Individual breakers for the fixed equipment shall be pad lockable in the "off' position, with
locking facilities kept within the board.
Material for the galley distribution board shall be GRP or 316S stainless steel.
5.6 Electrical System Shutdown
Shut down of electrical supplies will be performed in accordance with the approved

Platform HC
In addition to providing the capacity for platform HC, the platform HC UPS system shall
be rated to include a 25kVA load at 0. 9p.f. for the adjacent platform HA. The UPS power
supply to platform HA shall take the form of dual 3 phase and neutral, 40A feeders to
existing distribution boards.
Battery Banks
Each system shall include 2 x 50% battery banks, i.e. each battery.shall support 100% of
the load for 50% of the standby time. .,
The battery banks sha ll be made up of a number of individual Valve Regulated' Lead Acid
(VRLA) cells. The cells are specified as Manufacturer: Chloride.

Each battery bank feeder circuit shall be fitted yvith a suitably rated interposing isolator
protection switch complete with 24 V DC undervoltage F & G trip facility and 'Black Start'
override key switch. An intertrip shall be provided to isolate the battery to prevent deep
discharge of the battery cell voltage. The battery isolator unit shall be located in the

Battery banks shall be located on stands in a dedicafed climate controlled battery room. Lc7VC: ?.
The battery stcl_()dS shall be designed to withstand the periodic rough handling of the cells
and shock loading experienced during module installation and shall comply with the
requirements of BS 2011, part 2.1, with respectto mechanical stress.
5.8 Earthing and Bonding
Earthing and bonding shall comply with Maersk standard MITS-10: Electrical Installation
Offshore and Standard Earthing detail drawings.
To ensure safety of personnel and apparatus in case of electrical equipment
failures, and to prevent fires or mechanica l damage resulting from lightning or
sta~;c v:0d.ic,1ty, proper earthing and bo, 1ding s-:icili· ~8 u~.Jsig111.;~ -~ ,.,-;L..I:,....; in
accordanc e with IEC 60364, EN 60204 and Institute of Petroleum Model Code of

Earthing cable shall be single conductor, stranded copper selected in accordance with .
MITS-13: Electrical, Instrument and Communica tion Cables~ with colourv-
GREEN/YE LLOW striped sheath.
Generator & Transforme rs Neutral Star point shall be earthed to earth bosses attached
to the closest main structure. Cable size calculations shall be produced during the Detail
Design period.
Motors & equipment with feeder conductor sizes 50mm 2 or less shall be earthed via the
feed er cable integral green/yello w striped core. ·
All equipment and distribution boards shall have a main earth connection via a single
conductor to an Earth boss at the closest possible point.
The last light fitting / small power outlet in a circuit loop shall be bonded to the structure
via minimum 10mm2 single conductor & earth boss
Two(2) M12 earth bosses shall be provided for each package skid unit. -The earth bosses
shall be welded to the skid main structure at low level and diagonally opposite corners
All electrical equipment on a package unit shall be earth bonded to the package unit skid.
Instrument Electronic (CLEAN) earth.
Protective earth busbars will be provided in the Switchrooms, Control Rooms, Equipment
Rooms and Telecommu nications Rooms.

7.1 General
All electrical equipment shall be provided with labels/tag plates. In addition to the
nameplates each circuit shall be provided with a circuit identificatio n label.
Each item shall have a conspicuou s label giving its identity as detailed in the electrical
cable schedule. The minimum size of characters shall be 5mm.
All cables will be identified by their respective numbers as indicated on the cable
schedule. Cable markers will be located at each end of the cable and on one side of
transits.
A tag numbering system for equipment will be developed during detail design using
Maersk's equipment tag numbering system MIDS A-10.
7.2 Warning Notices
Warning notices will be in the English and Arabic languages and in accordance with the

8.0 LIGHTING AND SMALL POWER
8.1 General
Thirty percent of light fittings shall be emergency type fitted with an integral battery pack.
Emergency lighting shall be provided in each cabin which automatically illuminates on
loss of normal supply. All beds shall be provided with a reading light.
Lighting will be made up of normal and emergency circuits. Internal Accommod ation
normal & emergency luminaires will be the recessed linear fluorescent commercial type.

Lighting in areas requiring periods of darkness (eg.cabins and certain offices) shall be
switch controlled. All other lighting will be permanently energised.
Cabin (bunk), switchroom, plant room, service duct and bathroom luminaires will be

Surface installation will be installed in a neat orderly manner. Cleats will be used at
sufficient intervals to prevent the cable from sagging between fixing points.
Where surface installation is required in living room, plastic or steel channels will be used
to cover the installation. Colour and type shall be such that it will blend in with the
surroundings.
Cable bending radius will not be smaller than that specified by the cable manufacturer.
Due regard will be paid to mechanical protection of cables where exposed to possible
damage.
