I. INTRODUCTION
December 13 of the year 2022, at the Audio Visual room of the College of Arts and
Letters old building, the discussion of the Legend of Daragang Magayon was
conducted. It was discussed by Noemi Alarzar, Princess Crisedd Bayonito, Mc Reian
Bitancur, Tracy Ann Fabular, Claire Perez, and Imee Mariella Valladolid.
The aforementioned individual was given the freedom to choose their own choice of
topic and the Legend of Daragang Magayon was the topic that was chosen. The
discussion of the Legend of Daragang Magayon is for the Introduction to Literature and
Literary Studies subject and the discussants made sure that the format of the report
follows the format given by the professor of this subject, Sir Mike Macasinag.
The format of the report contains the Background of the Text, the Background of the
author, Elements of fiction such as Settings, Characters, Plot, Language, and Theme,
Literary Merits such as Artistry and Style, Spiritual Value, Intellectual Value, Emotional
Value, Permanence, and Universality, and lastly, the Thematic Relevance. Each part
has an assigned discussant. This paper contains detailed information regarding the
discussion of each person assigned to their part
Daragang Magayon is one of the Bicolano heroines that take shape in the legend of Mt.
Mayon in Albay, Philippines. To change up a little bit, the group decided to create a
modernized portrayal of the Legend of Daragang Magayon. Since women frequently
portray the character of Magayon, the group decided to present the Legend in a
completely new way. They decided that a man would play Magayon, while women
would portray the male characters in the legend. Mc Reian Bitancur was chosen to
portray Magayon since he was the only gentleman in the group, Princess Crisedd
Bayonito portrayed Rajah Makusog and Dawani, Imee Valladolid portrayed Pagtuga,
Noemi Alarzar portrayed Ulap, and Claire Perez and Tracy Ann Fabular are the ones
who narrated the flow of the Legend. It was their final report in the Introduction to
Literature and Literary Studies subject, therefore, the group did not want to end it in a
dull way. Instead, they gave a twist to somehow flaunt a new concept of showcasing the
well-known legend.
BACKGROUND OF THE TEXT AND AUTHOR
Noemi Alarzar is in charge of kicking off the discussion by going over the background of
the text and the author of the legend, Daragang Magayon. Since the legend has little
background regarding the period in which the text was written and published, she only
included three (3) pieces of information about the legend in her brief and concise
discussion of the text's history. She discussed that the Daragang Magayon is a heroine
who appears in the legend of Mt. Mayon in Albay, the Philippines. She also mentioned
that the legend is a folktale that describes how Mt. Mayon, an active stratovolcano on
the island of Luzon in the Philippine archipelago, was created and given its name.
Additionally, there are various versions of the legend that have spread throughout the
Bicol Region. She also brought up the author's information as she carried on with her
discussion. She stated that the legend's authorship is communal, which means there
isn't a single author because it has different versions and is spread throughout the area.
That concludes the discussion of Noemi about the background of the text and the
author of the legend.
ELEMENTS OF FICTION
Settings to Climax
As for the Elements of fiction, it started by Tracy Ann Fabular discussing the elements
of fiction which is the setting and the characters of The Legend of Daragang Magayon,
in presenting the characters the group members have prepared a small skit in order to
reenact the story of the legend.
In every part of the plot a small skit is delivered in front of everyone, from exposition
where Magayon was born until he met Ulap. In rising action it shows the genuine love of
Ulap and Magayon and the father of Magayon has no objection on it. In the climax,
Pagtuga the rival of Ulap heard this news and he waged a war. Ulap defeated Pagtuga
but Magayon died when the henchmen of Pagtuga throws an arrow and hit her, while
Magayon is in the arms of Ulap the henchmen of Pagtuga namely Linog hurled his
spear in the head of Ulap. In this situation the father of Magayon has no hesitation to kill
Linog at that precise moment.
Falling Action to Resolution
For the discussion of the falling action and resolution of the Legend of Daragang
Magayon, the assigned reporter was Claire Perez. She is also the one that discussed
the language and the theme of the aforementioned legend.
Indicated in the following is the detailed information about the part that Claire Perez
discussed: in the falling action of the Legend of Daragang Magayon, she discussed
about the scene where Makusog is the one that dug the grave for Ulap and Magayon
and the one that laid them together in each other’s arms as they had died. While on the
resolution, she discussed the part of the Legend wherein Magayon’s grave is rising
higher and higher, rumbling, and red-hot boulders bursting from the crater and this
event is believed to be happening because Pagtuga is taking back the gifts he gave to
Magayon. Additionally, it is said that Ulap is kissing Magayon when Mt. Mayon's tip is
shrouded in clouds and that Ulap is crying when raindrops trickle down the mountain's
slopes. The people of Bicol, especially the Albayanos, still hold on to the belief that
these occurrences are indeed related to Magayon, Ulap, and Pagtuga.
By reenacting the scenes from the legend, it allows the student to watch actively the
presentation and better understand the story instead of just reading the texts. In this
report, the group had just decided to deliver the presentation precisely in a creative way.
Language and Theme
Furthermore, in the language, Claire Perez discussed that English is the medium used
in the text that their group utilized as a basis. She continued by pointing out that there
were various versions of the Daragang Magayon writings that were written in Tagalog
and Bicol. Lastly, in the theme, she discussed that love is one of the themes of the
legend which is very evident between Magayon and Ulap as well as the familial type of
love between Chief Makusog and Magayon. The second theme she discussed is the
envy/ jealousy which is very evident in the character of Pagtuga who made the decision
to do something evil that led to the death of Magayon and Ulap just because he cannot
accept the fact that Magayon will never reciprocate his love. She also added that this
gave rise to the legend's 3rd central theme, which is that we do not always get what we
want.
LITERARY MERITS
Imee portrayed as Pagtuga, the great hunter and powerful Chief of Iriga. In the short
roleplay, Princess, Mc (who portrayed as Magayon), Noemi and Imee played the
characters in their outmost characteristics. After the short play, Imee also discussed the
Literary Merits to sum up their report
Continuing the discussion, Mc Reian further explained the two literary merits of the
legend – artistry and style and permanence. In artistry and style, he uttered that the
folklore used 3rd person omniscient point of view to narrate the entirety. Meaning, the
usage of pronouns like he/she were mostly present in the legend and the choice of
words used can be easily understood by the readers in a way the story wants to convey.
On the other hand, the permanence that stated by Mc Reian was the legend is still
being studied by the students in English and Literary courses. Eventually, that
concludes the literary merits of Daragang Magayon.
THEMATIC RELEVANCE
The assigned discussant for the Thematic Relevance is Princess Crisedd Bayonito. In
the story, the theme love is not just seen by Ulap and Magayon, it is also present
between Magayon and Makusog (Magayons father). In where the love is by the means
of making Magayon happy, or agreeing to the marriage of Magayon and Ulap, because
he wants to make his daughter happy, even if Ulap is not from their tribe. It was
important that the daughter of raja should be married by the greatest man inside their
tribe. In today's society the concept of love is still existing and many people believes in
love and that love eventually leads to marriage. If there is no love there is no marriage.
But unlike Magayon and Ulap, people don't decide of marriage that quick, because
people in real life, want to secure their lives by marrying someone they are sure that
won't leave their sides. Marriage is a process and not a joke that you can take back.
She also discussed another thematic relevance which is the anger and Jealousy that is
obviously present in Pagtuga. He was so angry the moment he knew that Magayon si
getting married, but the reason of his anger is because of the jealousy he felt, since he's
been consistent in pursuing Magayon, yet he was defeated by someone she just met.
That jealousy Pagtuga felt, became anger, to the point that he wanted to kill Ulap.
Maybe it's really true that "too much love could kill you", because look what happened to
the three of them, they all died. In reality, the emotions shouldn't drive people, people
should drive their emotions. It was still relevant up until now, because humans are just
humans, they feel happy, sad, angry and envy, they sometimes let their feelings control
them, and it leads to an action that they would eventually regret doing. So emotions are
just emotion, it will come and leave.
