Uwais Al- Qarni – Supreme Youth

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

In the name of Allah swt, The Most gracious and The Most Merciful.

Alhamdulillahirabbil alamin to the Almighty Allah swt for the

blessing day and He gives us in this barakah day and do not forget to
send our love to our Prophet, Muhammad SAW because he has guide
us from the dark world to the righteous path.

A very good morning to the honourable adjudicators, respected time

keeper, Mr. Speaker and beloved members of the floor.

It is a great honour for me to stand right here in front of all of you to

deliver a speech entitle “Uwais Al-Qarni – Supreme Youth”.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Who is Uwais Al-Qarni? Have you ever heard about Uwais Al-Qarni?
I truly believe that each one of us knows who is Uwas Al-Qarni? Let
us know more deeper about a person who is technically not a
companion of Rasulullah because he did not physically meet or see
Rasulullah. But this individual was very dear to the heart and soul of

1
Rasulullah, much more than those who were physically close to
Rasulullah and he loved him and spoke about him.

This is the great hero of Islam, and contemporary of Rasulullah

(SAWA) – OWAIS AL-QARNI.

There are certain matters which come to mind when we speak about
Owais:

The first one is His amazing love for Rasulullah;

And the secondly is His extremely high spirituality

Owais was from Yemen, which is far from Madina. He accepted

Islam and loved our beloved Prophet Muhammad by his full
existence. He was desperately wants to meet Rasulullah but he was
unable to because he had an old, infirm, mother to take care of.

This is one very important aspects in the life of Owais. He took full
responsibility for his mother and could not leave her to go to Madina
to meet Rasulullah.

He begged his mother for permission to meet Rasulullah, which was a

long commute in those days, from Yemen to Madina. His mother
allowed him once to fulfil this wish of his, but she placed a condition

2
that he should not remain there. He should return to Yemen after
meeting Rasulullah. He was jubilant by his mother honouring his plea
and agreed.

Members of the floor,

OWAIS AL-QARNI has a UNIQUE LOVE FOR RASULULLAH

SAW

Once Owais departs Yemen for Madina, Rasulullah was not there. He
was travelling. What an anti-climax for Owais, who was bitterly
disappointed naturally. Owais is now at a crossroads. What must he
do? He promised his mother that he will not stay. So he returned to
Yemen, but first asked where the house of Rasulullah is.

The story of Owais is one of truly unique love!

They pointed to the door of Rasulullah. He looked at the door and

started crying, before he embarked on his return to Yemen.

Rasulullah returns to Madina from his travel and asks if there were
guests to visit him during his absence. His companions replied that
there was a man from Yemen who came to meet him, but was
compelled to leave due to his commitments with his mother. They
informed Rasulullah that he conveyed his choicest greetings and
salaams.

3
Rasulullah (SAWA) replies that he knows this man who left his Nur
for them before going back to Yemen! This is the caliber of Owais in
the eyes of Rasulullah!

Here is a key message to our youth! Owais makes a promise to his

mother and fulfils his commitment and responsibility to her. This is
uppermost in his conscience despite his deep love and connection
with Rasulullah.

Dear beloved audience,

We have numerous Hadith of Rasulullah where he speaks about

Owais. For example, Rasulullah sometimes said that he smells the
fragrance of “Rahman” from a very fresh breeze coming from
Yemen!

People became quite curious wanting to know who Rasulullah is

referring to that he can smell from that far while he was in Madina, to
which he specified this is Owais!

What is really amazing about Owais is that from among the

(companions of Rasulullah), he reached to the peak of spirituality. He
had a very strong discipline of restraint from worldly desires.

They say that Owais would wear the most basic clothing which could
not even cover his body properly. The legacy of Owais is one of
spiritual empowerment and development. He was totally divorced
from this unreliable Dunya. The temptations from worldly pursuits
could not overpower him.

4
Ladies and gentlemen,

Why Uwais Al-Qarni is a supreme youth is because he IS THE

DOOR OF INTERCESSION FOR PARADISE

This Hadith is truly amazing! Rasulullah told the people that Owais is
truly unique. He explained his position by saying that Owais is the
one who will be stopped at the door of Jannah on the Day of
Judgement because he will need to intercede for many people and
take them along with him to Paradise!

The Hadith explains that Owais will be able to plead for the amount
of people equivalent to the 2 huge tribes of Madina! SubhanaAllah!

Owais is someone who is dedicated in spirituality, a mystic who is

completely divorced from worldly temptations. The key point I want
you to remember about Owais is that his level of spirituality does not
take him away from society and communal responsibility. This is
truly unique about Owais!

Owais relocated with his mother to Madina for a short while, after the
passing away of Rasulullah. He then moved to Kufa where he spent
most of this period in his life with his mother. People conveyed the
salaams and best greetings of Rasulullah to Owais when they met
him.

Uwais al-Qarni proves to us that even if someone is not from the

companions of Prophet Muhammad saw, yet he or she can have
immense love for God and His Prophet. Uwais earned the praise of

5
Prophet Muhammad and one of the greatest companions, Umar ibn al-
Khattab.

Prophet Muhammad once said there are some people from this nation
who are disheveled, lack money, and social status, but if they take an
oath by God, God will surely honor that oath. There are many fables
and unsubstantiated tales linked to Uwais al-Qarni, however, there are
also some authenticated stories that boost our faith and make us want
to behave more like this simple man of relatively low social status.

There are many traditions and stories about Uwais; many have not
been authenticated, but all of them highlight his humbleness and
simple living. Reading the story of Uwais prompts us to ask
ourselves, how did Uwais attain such a high status that even the
companions were told to seek forgiveness from him? He was dutiful
to his mother. He also suffered from a chronic condition that severely
affected his life, but he was patient. In short, his character was one
that every believer should strive to emulate.

Islam encourages kindness to parents especially the mother. Prophet

Muhammad once advised a man intending to go on a military
expedition to stay home instead and look after his mother. "Paradise
lies beneath her feet," he said, implying that the gates of Paradise are
open for those who cherish and respect their mothers.

6
As conclusion, Uwais Al-Qarni was a young man who was not
famous, poor, and had a skin disease. No one knew him and even his
name was never known. But, he is a young man who was once
mentioned by the Prophet SAW as a young man who is very loved by
Allah and famous in heaven.

I really hope that we learn something from Uwais Al-Qarni. Even

though, we might not be like Uwais Al-Qarni in term of spirituality
but, remember everyone, The Paradise is under our mother’s feet.

That’s all from me. May Allah bless us all. Thank you for lending me
your ears.
