Let’s Check

Activity no. 1 Now that you have known the most essential terms in the study of
environmental science. Let us try to check your understanding of these terms. In the space
provided, write the terms, being asked in the following statements:

Environmental Science 1. It refers to the systematic study of our environment and our place in
it.

Environmental Science 2. An interdisciplinary science integrating natural sciences, social

sciences, and humanities in broad study of the world around us.

Environment 3. The circumstances or conditions that surrounds an organisms or group of

organisms or the complex of social or cultural conditions that affect an individual or community.

Modern Environmental Movement 4. It is a movement created to protect animals and places

from human developmental activities.

Environmental Movement Justice. 5. It is an international movement that aims to encourage

social, economic, and environmental justice.

Open System 6. Refers to systems that receive inputs from surroundings and produce outputs
that leave the system.

The second law of thermodynamics. 7. It is a law which states that energy is degraded to
lower- quality forms, or it dissipates and is lost, as it is used.

Population 8. It consists of all the members of a species living in each area at the same time.

Ecological pyramids 9. It is an inefficient energy chain.

Food webs 10. It is a feeding relationship usually weave numerous organisms into large,
complex, and dynamic networks.

Let’s Analyze

1. Define environmental science and identify some important environmental

concerns we face today. Should environmental science include
dimensions? Explain.

Environmental science is the study of the relationships between the natural

environment and human society. Including physical, chemical, and biological
processes that comprise the natural world. Some important environmental concerns that
we face today is Climate change, Loss of biodiversity, Air and pollution and
Overconsumption of natural resources that needed the most of humans. Yes, including
multiple dimensions in environmental science can provide a more comprehensive
understanding of environmental issues and can lead to more effective solutions.

2. What is science? Identify and discuss some of its basic principles.

Science for me is something that defines the systematized body of knowledge that
builds and organize a lot of information in a different form of testable experiments
and predictions about everything in the universe. These are some basic principles the
empiricism which is the knowledge is based on observation and experimentation and
skepticism which scientist’s questions and evaluate claims, hypothesis, and theories.
3. Draw a diagram showing the difference between a food chain from a
food web.

A food web, on the other

sequence of organisms and interconnected
that consume one network of food chains.

4. Why is ethics being studied in environmental science. Cite examples.

Ethics is an important part of environmental science because it deals with questions

of right and wrong, good, and bad, and fairness and justice in relation to the natural
world and human actions. Because environmental science concerns the study of the
interactions between the natural environment and human societies, then it has a big
impact on this topic, in addition environmental science raises many ethical questions.
Example
Climate change: How should we respond to the threat of climate change?
Biodiversity loss: How should we balance economic development with the protection
of endangered species and their habitats?

In A Nutshell

YOUR TURN

3. Environmental science is the study of the interactions between the natural environment and
human societies. It encompasses the physical, chemical, and biological processes that make up
the natural world, as well as the ways in which human activities impact these processes.

4. Food chain is a linear sequence of organisms that consume one another, starting with a
producer and ending with a top predator. Food web, on the other hand, is a more complex and
interconnected network of food chains.

5. Ethics is an important part of environmental science because it deals with questions of right
and wrong, good, and bad, and fairness and justice in relation to the natural world and human
actions. Environmental science raises many ethical questions about how we should use and
protect natural resources, how we should balance economic development with environmental
protection, and how we should address the impacts of human activities on the environment.

6. Science is the systematic study of the natural world through observation, experimentation, and
analysis. It is a way of understanding how the natural world works and how different parts of the
natural world are related to each other.

7. Environmental science can include multiple dimensions such as social, economic, and political
dimensions, which provide a holistic understanding of environmental problems and potential
solutions.

8. Some important environmental concerns we face today include climate change, loss of
biodiversity, air and water pollution, soil degradation, and overconsumption of natural resources.

9. Protection of environment is important for the survival of all living organism and for the well-
being of human society.

10. The efficiency of energy chains is important to reduce energy costs and decrease
environmental impact.
