Let’s Check
Activity no. 1 Now that you have known the most essential terms in the study of
environmental science. Let us try to check your understanding of these terms. In the space
provided, write the terms, being asked in the following statements:
Environmental Science 1. It refers to the systematic study of our environment and our place in
it.
Open System 6. Refers to systems that receive inputs from surroundings and produce outputs
that leave the system.
The second law of thermodynamics. 7. It is a law which states that energy is degraded to
lower- quality forms, or it dissipates and is lost, as it is used.
Population 8. It consists of all the members of a species living in each area at the same time.
Food webs 10. It is a feeding relationship usually weave numerous organisms into large,
complex, and dynamic networks.

Let’s Analyze
Science for me is something that defines the systematized body of knowledge that
builds and organize a lot of information in a different form of testable experiments
and predictions about everything in the universe. These are some basic principles the
empiricism which is the knowledge is based on observation and experimentation and
skepticism which scientist’s questions and evaluate claims, hypothesis, and theories.
3. Draw a diagram showing the difference between a food chain from a
food web.
In A Nutshell
YOUR TURN
3. Environmental science is the study of the interactions between the natural environment and
human societies. It encompasses the physical, chemical, and biological processes that make up
the natural world, as well as the ways in which human activities impact these processes.
4. Food chain is a linear sequence of organisms that consume one another, starting with a
producer and ending with a top predator. Food web, on the other hand, is a more complex and
interconnected network of food chains.
5. Ethics is an important part of environmental science because it deals with questions of right
and wrong, good, and bad, and fairness and justice in relation to the natural world and human
actions. Environmental science raises many ethical questions about how we should use and
protect natural resources, how we should balance economic development with environmental
protection, and how we should address the impacts of human activities on the environment.
6. Science is the systematic study of the natural world through observation, experimentation, and
analysis. It is a way of understanding how the natural world works and how different parts of the
natural world are related to each other.
7. Environmental science can include multiple dimensions such as social, economic, and political
dimensions, which provide a holistic understanding of environmental problems and potential
solutions.
8. Some important environmental concerns we face today include climate change, loss of
biodiversity, air and water pollution, soil degradation, and overconsumption of natural resources.
9. Protection of environment is important for the survival of all living organism and for the well-
being of human society.
10. The efficiency of energy chains is important to reduce energy costs and decrease
environmental impact.
