Definition of Diversity

❖The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and


respect.
❖It means understanding that each individual is unique, &
recognizing our individual differences.
❖The ways we are different; the condition of having unique
characteristics.
❖The condition of being diverse : Variety ;
especially : the inclusion of diverse people
(as people of different races or cultures) in a
group or organization.
❖It is the exploration of these differences in
a safe, positive, & nurturing environment.
❖It is about understanding each other &
moving beyond simple tolerance to
embracing & celebrating the rich
dimensions of diversity contained within
each individual.
Understanding Diversity
✓Diversity is more than just tolerating differences. It is respecting,
appreciating, and understanding the varying characteristics of
individuals.
✓Everyone is unique and no single person is a representative of a
certain group. Stereotypes and other racial biases/prejudices are
damaging to a business.
✓Discrimination breeds narrow-mindedness, impairs employee
morale, strains employee relationships and thus, damages
productivity. Not to mention, it is illegal and costly in terms of
litigation!

➢For society, diversity brings richness & variety. There are


always new & interesting things to be learned from each other.
➢For a business, employing a diverse workforce enables it to
use a wider range of talents & skills.
➢These lead to creativity & innovation. Businesses need to
mirror the communities & cultures they work in so they can
understand & anticipate the diverse needs of their customers.

This means they are more likely to perform better &
make a bigger contribution.
Teachers must bridge the
gap:
➢Overcome biases
➢Provides supportive environment for all - every student is
respected, feels comfortable and confident, and can learn.
➢Teachers who respect their students' cultural strengths, life
experiences, and community resources are better
positioned to meet their students' needs.
