TOTAL POINTS: 100

Theory (30 points)
The theory section is available in Black Board and will display in a similar way to the regular-
semester Quizzes you have done before. It is designed to last no more than 30 minutes.

Problems (70 points)
1. (10 points) The vapor pressure of carbon tetrachloride is 0.417 atm at 50 °C, and 0.593 atm
at 60 °C.

a) What is the molar enthalpy of vaporization of carbon tetrachloride for this temperature
range?

b) Will carbon tetrachloride spontaneously boil at the summit of Puig Major (highest
elevation in the Balearic Islands at 1445 meters above sea level, where the atmospheric
pressure is 0.840 atm) in a summer day with a temperature of 32 °C? (Consider the molar
enthalpy of vaporization computed, to be valid at this temperature. Justify your answer)

2. (10 points) Xenon crystallizes in the face-centered cubic system, and the edge of a unit cell
is 620 pm. What is the density of crystalline xenon? (AWXe = 131.29 g mol-1.Give your
answer in units of g/cm3)

3. (10 points) A protein has a molecular weight of 3500 g mol-1. The osmotic pressure of a
saturated solution of this protein in water is 0.292 atm at 25 °C.

a) What is the molarity of the solution?

b) How many grams of the protein are dissolved in 500 mL of the saturated solution?

4. (10 points) The reaction C2H5Cl (g) →C2H4 (g) + HCl (g), is first order in C2H5Cl. The rate
constant is 1.60 x 10-6 s-1 for the reaction conducted at 650 K. In an investigation of the
decomposition of C2H5Cl (g), an initial concentration of 0.165 mol L-1 was used.

a) What will the concentration of C2H5Cl (g) be after 125 h?

b) How many hours will it take for the concentration of C2H5Cl to drop to 0.100 mol L-1?

c) How many hours will it take for 75% of the C2H5Cl to decompose?

5. (10 points) An aqueos solution is 0.075 M in HNO2 and 0.030 M in NaNO2. Considering the
chemical equation HNO2 (aq) + H2O (l) ⇌ H3O+ (aq) + NO2- (aq) and its ionization constant
Ka = 4.5 x 10-5. (Hint: NaNO2 is an ionic salt and you can safely assume it fully dissociates
in the given solution)

a) What is [H3O+] in the solution and the pH?

b) Assuming no NaNO2 was present in solution, what would be [H3O+] and its pH?

6. (10 points) Determine the molar concentration of a saturated solution of SrF2, if its Kps = 7.9
x 10-10.

7. (10 points) If 25 mL of a 0.050 M solution of CaCl2 are mixed with 50 mL of a 0.025 M

solution of Na2SO4, will CaSO4 precipitate? Consider that CaSO4 has a Kps = 2.4 x 10-5.
(Hints: CaCl2 and Na2SO4 are fully dissociated; consider the change in concentrations due
to the change in volume after adding the 25 and 50 mL)

BONUS PROBLEM

8. (10 points) At 25 °C the concentration of IO3- ion in a saturated Ba(IO3)2 solution is 5.5 x
10-4 M. What is the Ksp of Ba(IO3)2?
