History of Chess
Chess has a long and storied history. The game has changed quite a bit from its
earliest forms in India. The modern iteration we enjoy today wasn't known until the 16th
century. There were no clocks, and the pieces were not standardized until the 19th century.
Chess, as we know it today, was born out of the Indian game chaturanga before the 600s AD.
The game spread throughout Asia and Europe over the coming centuries, and eventually
evolved into what we know as chess around the 16th century. One of the first masters of the
game was a Spanish priest named Ruy Lopez. Although he didn't invent the opening named
after him, he analyzed it in a book he published in 1561. Chess theory was so primitive back
then that Lopez advocated the strategy of playing with the sun in your opponent's eyes.
Equipment of Chess
Equipment’s of Chess are the most important in the modern-day chess. Chess is
an early game. For this, it saw a number of evolutions. All the equipments in chess are
the tangible items. The equipments in chess are chess pieces, chessboard, chess clock
and table.
1. Chess box
Chess box is a container for holding chess pieces. It is most commonly made of
wood. But some of the chess boxes are made up of plastic. The internal box
configuration can be individual slots for each chess piece, one divider to separate
the white and black pieces or no divider with the chess pieces mixed together.
The external chess box is typically rectangular in shape, but can be done in a
variety a shape including a coffer top or sliding drawers.
2. Chess clock
It is dual clock with buttons to stop one clock while starting the other, so that the
two clocks never run simultaneously. Chess clocks were first used extensively in
tournament chess in Europe. Later it came to India during the British era. It was
first used in London 1883 tournament. The analog clocks are equipped with a
flag that falls to indicate the exact moment the player's time has expired. The
analog clocks use mechanical buttons. Pressing the button of the clock on one
player's side physically stops the movement of that player's clock and releases
the hold on the opponents.
3. Chess table
A chess table is a table, made up of wood or any material. It has the features to
make it useful for playing the game of chess. A chess board is usually integral to
the table top and often two drawers are provided to hold the pieces when not in
use. Chess tables can be extremely decorative, well made and potentially
expensive pieces of furniture in colonial India. The most chess tables have the
board inlaid or engraved though cheaper tables may have it painted on. A chess
table is not necessary to play chess and is not restricted only to playing chess.
4. Chessboard
Chessboard is the type of checkerboard. It is used in the classic board game
chess, and consists of 64 squares which consist of eight rows and eight columns
and 32 pieces.
