    The patient was hospitalized for treatment of a hepatic abscess and has been unable to defecate for three days with abdominal pain. The nursing assessment found the patient appeared weak with no stool output. The nursing diagnosis was altered bowel elimination related to abdominal muscle weakness. Nursing interventions included auscultating bowel sounds, administering a laxative, instructing the patient to increase fiber intake and fluids. The objectives were for the patient to regain normal bowel functioning within 8 hours and recover from difficulty in bowel elimination within 3 days, but these goals were not met after the nursing interventions.
