DEVELOPING THE FOUR ESSENTIAL SKILLS

communication.
¡ These are called the four "language skills".
¡ The four skills of language are a set of four capabilities that allow an individual to
comprehend and produce spoken language for proper and effective interpersonal
communication.
¡ These skills are Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
RECEPTIVE VS PRODUCTIVE

¡ Listening and reading are the receptive skills because learners do not need to
produce language, they receive and understand it.
¡ These skills are sometimes known as passive skills.
¡ The productive skills are speaking and writing because learners are applying these
skills in a need to produce language.
¡ They are also known as active skills.
LISTENING

¡ The primary aspects that comprise listening are, comprehending, retaining and
responding.
¡ One of the indispensable ways of developing ones listening skills is to communicate
well with others.
¡ You should understand the main ideas of most speech in a standard dialect.

English.
READING

¡ You should try to spend at least 30 minutes every day on focused reading. That’s how
to improve your reading skills seriously and successfully.

read, the more input your brain gets about how the language works.
¡ Reading is the best way to improve your vocabulary.
¡ Read along with the text while you listen to a native speaker read it. Listen and read
several times and you’ll be improving your pronunciation and listening skills too.
