CE 4103-Prestressed Concrete
Answer the first question which is mandatory and answer any three questions from other
four questions.
1. The mid span section of a composite precast beam stem 300 mm by 920 mm deep is 16
post tensioned with an initial force of 2600 kN. The effective prestress after losses is
taken as 2300 kN. Moment due to the weight of that precast section is 250 kN-m at
mid span. After it is erected in place, the top slab of 150 mm deep by 920 mm wide is
to be cast in place producing a moment of 150 kN-m. The c.g.s. is 200 mm above the
bottom fiber. After the slab concrete has hardened, the composite section is to carry a
maximum live load moment of 750kN-m. Compute stresses in the section at various
stages, if Aps=2400 mm2, fpu=1650 MPa, fc’=34 MPa. Estimate the ultimate stresses.
(Draw figure and stress diagram where it’s needed)
2. A posttensioned simple beam on a span of 12 m is shown in Figure-1. It carries a 08
superimposed load of 12 kN/m in addition to its own weight of 6.5 kN/m. The initial
prestress in the steel is 1050 MPa, reducing to 920 MPa after deducting all losses and
assuming no bending of the beam. The parabolic cable has an area of 1650 mm2, n = 6.
Compute the total dead and live uniform load that can be carried by the beam, (1) for
zero tensile stress in the bottom fibers, (2) for cracking in the bottom fibers at a
modulus of rupture of 4.5 N/mm2, and assuming concrete to take tension up to that
value.( Draw the stress diagram also)

3. A prestressed concrete beam is continuous over two spans (Figure-2) and its curved 08
tendon is to be tensioned from both ends. Compute the percentage loss of prestress due
to friction, from one end to the center of the beam (A to E). The curvature coefficient
between the cable and the duct is taken as 0.3 and the average wobble coefficient is
0.0010 per ft.(Solve this math in Exact method)
