A Detailed Lesson Plan in Technology and Livelihood Education

Horticulture Grade - 10

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
a. define the different methods of determining soil fertility,
b. enumerate the different methods of determining soil fertility; and
c. assimilate the importance of determining soil fertility.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Methods of Determining Soil fertility
Reference: Horticulture Grade 10 Learning Module
Materials: Manila Paper and Other Visual Aids

III. PROCEDURE

A. Preliminary Activities

B. Motivation
JUMBLED LETTERS

Before formally starting the class for today I

have a little thing for you. This is called
jumbled letters; I want you to answer this for
about 3 minutes.

LOIS TILITYREF
Soil Fertility
Very good and that will lead us to our topic
for today which is the Methods of
determining soil fertility.

C. Lesson Proper
Before moving on to the methods of
determining soil fertility, let us define first
soil fertility. What is soil fertility?
Sir, soil fertility refers to the ability of the soil to
sustain agricultural plant growth.
Very good, so here are the methods of
determining soil fertility. The first method,
please read and explain.
1. Field fertilizer trials. As the term implies, field
fertilizer trial experiment is carried out in the field.
It could be conducted in different places under
different seasons. When managed and conducted
properly, the results obtained from this method are
very reliable.
Very good, let us now move on to the second
method. The next method is called soil
analysis. What is soil analysis?
Sir, it is a rapid method of accessing the fertilizer
needs of crops. The principle involved is that the
amounts of available nutrients in the soil are
directly related up to a critical point with the
growth and yield of crop.
Excellent, soil analysis consists of four
phases. What are these four phases?
1. proper collection of soil samples
2. chemical analysis
3. interpretation of analytical results
4. formulation of fertilizer recommendation
exactly, the third method is called plant tissue
analysis. What is plant tissue analysis?
This is a customarily made of fresh plant tissue in
the field. It is a quick test and is important in the
diagnosis of the needs of growing plants. Sap from
ruptured cells for assimilated N-P-K. Tests for
other elements such as Mg and Mn are also done.
The concentration of the nutrients in the cell sap is
usually a good indication of how well the plant is
Very good, that is correct. Do you have any supplied at the time of testing.

deficiency symptom. What is nutrient
deficiency symptom?
An abnormal appearance of the growing plant may
be caused by a deficiency of one or more nutrient
elements. This visual method of evaluating soil
fertility is unique and it requires no expensive
equipment. It can also be used as a supplement to

activity.

D. Enrichment Activity
I’m going to group this class into four, the
first two rows will be the group 1, followed
by group 2, 3, and 4. Stay where you are and
form a circle. What I want you to do is answer
the question for 5 minutes and choose 1
representative in your group to present it in
front.

Why do we need to determine soil fertility?

E. Generalization
Do you have any questions class?
None sir
If none I am going to be the one who is going
to ask some questions.
What is soil fertility again class?
Sir, soil fertility refers to the ability of the soil to
sustain agricultural plant growth.
What are again the methods of determining
soil fertility? Give me two.
Field fertilizer traits and soil analysis sir
Very good, how about the last two methods?
Sir plant tissue analysis and nutrient deficiency
symptom.
Very good class

F. Valuing
Among the methods of determining soil
fertility which one do you prefer to use and
why? I prefer to use …. Because……

Do you think determining soil fertility

important? Why? Yes sir because . . . . . . .

IV. EVALUATION (5 points)

True or False. Write T if the statement is true and write F if the statement is false
