Walatta House - Srilanka
Through this unique entrance of Walatta House, stepping down the concrete steps, with
immaculately interwoven red brick walls, you will feel as though you have found an
undiscovered secret. There is light at the end of the tunnel… out into an open-sided and planned
living space (you’re by no means underground), complete with a breakfast table, separate dining
table, L-shape sofa and coffee table garnished with the hand-picked flower of the day. Much like
Le Corbusier’s Barcelona Pavilion, the décor is sexy and slick with grey, white and black
furnishing, blessed with a balanced sprinkle of colour. The three bedrooms (king size, queen size
and twin), all designed to focus and enhance the jungle that surrounds the house, are placed in a
line, along the hallway entrance. French sliding doors allow you to enjoy all the splendours of
the garden in air-conditioned comfort. All three bedrooms have en-suite inside/outside
bathrooms, designed with modern materials including polished concrete and bare red brick to
complement the tropical flora, providing privacy and natural light… allowing just enough nature
for when it calls! The Master Suite has a garden view and its own small terrace overlooking the
pool.
Stretching the width of the open-sided living space is the twenty-metre pool that enjoys a south
facing view over the Indian Ocean. Surrounding the pool is a crisp lawn, dotted with palm trees
providing shade. A wooden sheltered table and chairs on the lawn make an ideal spot for
breakfast. Stepping stones lead passed a reading deck down to the privately accessed beach.
From a small car park, a pathway leads down the hillside towards the house and its flat, grass-
covered roof. A raised doorway marks the main entrance, and reveals a short staircase leading
down into the house. As you descend, exposed bricks line either side of a cool, dark corridor, to
the left of which are three bedrooms. This corridor eventually leads into a bright, open-plan
living and dining area with 180-degree panoramas of the sea. Garden courtyards – billowing
bamboo and palms – encircle the living areas beneath pockets of open ceiling, ushering in light
and air. This inside-out garden design is mimicked throughout the house.
Furnishing the living area are an oversized L-shaped sofa and a comfy leather lounger, all
positioned to share in the sea views. Black standing lamps (resembling giant versions of the
classic anglepoise desk lamp) stand sentinel whilst a dining table for eight, sits to one side
beneath an intriguing arrangement of hanging light bulbs. A cement bar counter, with sink
tucked behind, is complemented by a little pantry next door with drinks cooler, coffee maker and
tea-making facilities. This pantry leads into an air conditioned snug with LED TV, DVD player,
surround sound and a desk with computer.
The king-size platform bed in the master bedroom is positioned towards the pool and ocean.
Giant floor-to-ceiling timber and glass sliding doors open onto two terraces and an interior
garden courtyard, whilst another door leads into a partially outdoor bathroom with twin sinks and
a shower. The other two bedrooms – a queen and a twin – enjoy views to the side, of the ocean
and palms, also have garden courtyards, and have similarly designed bathrooms with single
sinks.
The main kitchen at Walatta House is fully equipped and located next to the staff quarters,
