“Impromptu, Extemporaneous, Memorized, and Manuscript Speaking”

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:


1. define the types of speech delivery.
2. compose a speech according to delivery.
3. Appreciate the purpose of the types of speech in different situation.

I. Identify the following questions .


1. It is a method of delivery that involves delivering a message on the spur of the moment, as
when someonen is asked to “ say a few words.”
2. What method of delivery consists of delivering a speech in a conversational fashion using
notes? This is the style most speeches call for.
3. What method of delivery consists of reciting a scripted speech from memory .
4. It is a method of delivery that consists of reading a fully scripted speech. It is useful when a
message needs to be delivered in precise words. .
5. It is the action of conveying information or expressing one’s thoughs and feelings in spoken
language.

WHAT IS SPEAKING?

2. It is the activity of delivering speeches or lectures.
WHAT ARE THE FOUR METHODS OF DELIVERY?
 IMPROMPTU SPEAKING – is the presentation of a short message without advance
preparation. It also involves delivering a message on the spur of the moment as when
someone is asked to “say a few words”
EXAMPLES:
 Meetings where you give your opinions or suggestions.
 Ambush interviews where journalist ask you questions.
 Class recitation.
 Q and A portion during beauty pageants.
 Self-introductions in a group settings.
Practical Tips for Impromptu Speech Delivery (Fletcher & Crochieve)
1. Content – present a definite point of view in your speech.
2. Organization
*Past - after a brief, attention getter and statement of your subject or point of
view.
*Present - condition of your subject how things are at the present.
*Future – future and present possibilities relevance of your topic in the future.
Advantages of Impromptu Speaking
 You can present your ideas, make appeals or disseminate information at a time most
appropriate or most needed by your listeners.
 It can improve your image.
Disadvantages of Impromptu Speaking
 It is easy for you to perform poorly.
 It makes anyone nervous.

HOW TO DELIVER IMPROMPTU SPEAKING EFFECTIVELY


 Speak with confidence
 Maintain eye contact with your confidence
 Avoid saying filler: such as ahh, hmm, well
 Maintain good posture
 Speak loud enough to be heard easily
 Gesture effectively
 Appear to enjoy speaking
 Speak with enthusiasm
 Hide your blunders
 Sit properly when you’re done.

 EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING
 It is the prestation of carefully planned and rehearsed speech.
 It is spoken in a conventional manner using brief notes.
“Most school have extemporaneous speaking.”
Examples:
 Answering a teacher’s question in front of the class.
 Explaining your parents why you arrived home after your curfew.
Tips in Extemporaneous Speaking
 Stick to one presentation structure.
 Tap into the power of presentation methods.
 Don’t memorize everything at once.
3 Things you should not do while presenting your Extemporaneous Speaking
 Don’t be afraid of your Audience.
 Don’t speak fast.
 Don’t pretend to be smarter than you are.
“Remember, time management is important in impromptu and extemporaneous”.
 MEMORIZED SPEAKING
 It is the rote recitation of written message that the speaker has committed to memory.
 It is delivering a speech that is called verbatim from a text.
Advantage of Memorized Speaking
 It enables the speaker to maintain eye to eye contact with the audience throughout the
speech.
Disadvantages of Memorized Speaking
 You need amount of time memorizing a text.
 You might forget what is next and this may cause embarrassing.
 You get nervous.
Tips on how to deliver Memorized Speech
 Maintain the 140 word per minute speech rate.
 Use hand gestures and movement.
 Include expression in your voice.
 Memorize not just the speech but also the outline of the speech.

 MANUSCRIPT SPEAKING
 The word for word interaction of written message.
 It is well prepared.

Disadvantages of Manuscript Speaking
 It lacks impact on the audience and;
 It lacks emotion.
Tips when you read a manuscript
 Don’t rush.
 Memorized the first and the last line.
 Look at the audience at the end or at the beginning of a sentence.
 Practice several times.
