ENGINE POWER MANAGEMENT AND SAFE DRIVING STRATEGIES

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to understand
engine power management and safe driving strategies.

INTRODUCTION
How should a vehicle he driven to minimize fuel consumption? In this
paper we consider the case where a train is to be driven along a straight,
level track, but where speed limits may apply over parts of the track. The
journey is to be completed within a specified time using as little fuel as
possible.

Driver Safety

Here are some of the most fundamental safe-driving strategies:

 Take good care of your vehicle: Maintain your vehicle in good working

condition, regularly checking the tires (condition and inflation), brakes
and suspension. Clean all windows inside and out.
 Drive when you are emotionally and physically fit to do so:Monitor
your emotions, medications and alcohol use. Certain drugs,
combinations of drugs or even small amounts of alcohol can impair
the skills you need to drive safely. Impaired driving has been linked to
increases in crash risk.
 Pay attention: Primary causes of traffic collisions are inattention and
distraction.
 Use all the safety equipment you can, including proper restraints for
the driver and all passengers: The use of seat belts alone typically cuts
the rates of injury and death in traffic collisions by about 45 percent.
 Do not drive faster than the posted speed limits; drive slower when
conditions dictate: Driving at a speed higher than what is safe for
various conditions leaves you with less reaction time and braking
distance than you may need to avoid a crash. Speeding also increases
the risk of serious injury in a crash.

Date Prepared: Document No. CBLM-02

DRIVING NC II Issued by:
June 2022 Page 9 of
DRIVING LIGHT Prepared by: TESDA PTC- 36
VEHICLE TESDA Trainers DN
 Observe and obey all traffic laws: Just as you expect other drivers to
follow the rules, they expect you to do so too. Another driver may not
be able to stop in time for you if you fail to observe and obey traffic
regulations, signs and signals.
 Be ready to react to unexpected situations: Rear end collisions are
very common at intersections. Avoid them by maintaining a safe
following distance.

Defensive Driving Strategies

Driving defensively is driving to protect yourself while on the road by
preparing for and preventing collisions before they occur to you. The task of
driving actually consists of several tasks: controlling the vehicle, watching
the road for other drivers and hazards, making sense of signs and signals,
and making decisions. What's more, these also can be broken down further
into other tasks. If you find multitasking difficult, you should treat driving in
the same way.

Trip Planning

One way to help make driving easier and safer is to plan your trips.

Planning Daily Trips

 Don't drive if you don't feel well.

 Avoid driving at dawn or dusk.
 Make sure your vehicle is properly equipped and in good working
order.
 Don'tdrive while on medication that can affect your judgment or
ability to react to driving situations.
 Choose a route that is familiar to you.
 Avoid driving on poorly maintained or unmarked roadways.
 Try to avoid areas you know are congested.
 Try to avoid driving during peak rush hours.
 Try to avoid driving in bad weather.

Planning Long Trips
 Get a good night's sleep the night before you start your trip.
 Set realistic goals for daily mileage.
 Try leaving when congestion is lightest.
 Avoid driving at dawn or dusk.
 Don't take stimulants (e.g. pep pills) to help you stay awake.
 Eat regular, light meals.
 Stop periodically for breaks (every 2 hours or 100 miles).

INFORMATION SHEET 2.2-2
MANAGING FATIGUE WHILE DRIVING

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able:
1. Manage fatigue while driving the vehicle

Introduction

Drowsy driving is suspected to be a primary cause in more

than 20% of road fatalities. Most fatigue-related accidents occur during
normal sleeping hours, and the more severe the crash, the more likely it is
that the driver or drivers were fatigued. Fatigue is a likely factor in almost
one third of single-vehicle crashes in rural areas.

Many people think fatigue is only a problem for long-distance drivers,

however it is just as relevant for short-distance drives. People generally don't
become fatigued from driving. Usually they are already tired when they get
behind the wheel from long hours, shift work, lack of sleep, sleep apnoea or
physically demanding roles.

Your body can't fight the need to sleep. Chemicals build up in your brain
until they reach a tipping point and you will fall asleep.

Date Prepared: Document No. CBLM-02

DRIVING NC II Issued by:
June 2022 Page 15 of
DRIVING LIGHT Prepared by: TESDA PTC- 36
VEHICLE TESDA Trainers DN
Causes of drowsy driving

 a lack of quality sleep

 driving when you would normally be sleeping (overnight)
 sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea, a sleeping condition that causes
tiredness throughout the day.

It's important to remember that you can't fight sleep.

Symptoms of fatigue

Fatigue is easy to detect, with symptoms including:

 yawning
 sore or heavy eyes
 slower reaction times
 finding you're daydreaming and not concentrating on your driving
 driving speed creeps up or down
 impatience
 impaired driving performance such as poor gear changes
 stiffness and cramps
 loss of motivation

How fatigue affects your driving

Fatigue has a huge impact on your driving and can affect your ability
to drive safely, similar to the effect of drink driving. Research shows that
being awake for 17 hours has the same affect on your driving ability as a
BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of 0.05. Going without sleep for 24 hours
has the same affect as a BAC of 0.1, double the legal limit.

VEHICLE TESDA Trainers DN
Driving while tired or fatigued can result in:

 slower reaction times

 lack of concentration – errors in calculating speed and distance are
common
 reduced vigilance and poor judgement
 nodding off – even for a few seconds can result in dire consequences

How to beat driver fatigue

The only way to address fatigue is by sleeping. Make a choice not to drive

when tired or follow these guidelines to prevent fatigue:

 get a good night's sleep before heading off on a long trip

 don't travel for more than eight to ten hours a day
 take regular breaks – at least every two hours
 share the driving wherever possible
 don't drink alcohol before your trip. Even a small amount can
significantly contribute to driver fatigue
 don't travel at times when you'd usually be sleeping
 take a 15 minute powernap if you feel yourself becoming drowsy

TASK SHEET 2.2-3
Title: Maintaining Proper Distance and Speed
Performance Objective: After reading this task sheet the trainee’s
should be able to drive a vehicle with proper distance and speed to
insure safety on the road.
Supplies/Materials : Basic hand tools

Equipment : Vehicle unit

Step-by-step procedures:

Practicing the 3-second rule

At first, it may be difficult for your teen to focus on both a fixed object
and the car in front of them in order to calculate their following distance.

1. Counting
If this is the case, start by simply asking them to count the
number of seconds until they reach a fixed object that you determine. At
this point, you’re not concerned with the car ahead. For instance, you
would ask them to count until your car reaches the next intersection.
Have them count out-loud by saying, “one one thousand, two one
thousand, three one thousand.

2. Guessing
Once they get the hang of counting (which shouldn’t take long),
ask them to try to guess the number of seconds until they reach fixed
objects. For example, “Son, how many seconds until we reach that exit
sign?” They should make their immediate guess while you count. Once
they demonstrate success, move on to having them calculate their
following distance.

VEHICLE TESDA Trainers DN
3. Calculating
Ask your teen to create a 3 second following distance between their
car and the car ahead of them. Once they’ve created what they think is
the appropriate distance, test it. As soon as the car ahead passes a fixed
object or landmark, start counting out loud. Once your car passes that
same object, stop counting. You should have counted to three seconds
(or higher, which would be great).

Information Sheet 2.3-1
Monitor and Maintain Vehicle Performance

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Monitor and maintain vehicle performance while driving to ensure
safety and to prevent vehicle damage

INTRODUCTION
Whether having your vehicle serviced regularly or attempting to tackle
the job on your own, keeping your vehicle in good working condition will
maximize its performance and help you to save on costly repairs down the
road.

Ways of maintaining the vehicle

Check your brakes

The brake system in your vehicle is imperative for keeping you and your
loved ones safe. Common signs of brake problems include a high-pitched
screeching sound when applying the brakes, brakes that are not as
responsive as they should be, a pedal that 'sinks' towards the floor, vibration
on the brake pedal or a grinding metallic sound. If you experience any of
these signs, drop by at nearest autoshop so an experienced mechanic can
take a look.

Top up 'vital fluids'

Keeping your vehicle running well requires constant monitoring of vital

fluids. Fluids that should be monitored and topped up on a regular basis
include:

• Engine oil

• Transmission fluid

• Engine coolant
Date Prepared: Document No. CBLM-02
DRIVING NC II Issued by:
June 2022 Page 32 of

VEHICLE TESDA Trainers DN
• Power steering fluid
• Brake fluid

• Windshield washer fluid

Replace shocks and struts

Ensuring your vehicle has adequate shocks and struts will increase your
vehicle's safety and performance. Worn shocks and struts can cause uneven
tire wear, damage suspension components, and cause unusual drift and
sway to your vehicle.

Change your tires

With the harsh winters we've been experiencing, more Canadians have been
relying on winter tires for increased safety in cold, wet weather. It is
important that winter tires be replaced with all-season tires in the spring, as
the rubber compound is different and performs differently in warmer
temperatures. Driving on winter tires throughout the summer is hard on
them and will decrease their lifespan.

Oil/ Air Filter Change

Your car's filters have a significant impact on engine life and performance –
they also have an effect on fuel consumption and emissions.

While the oil filter's job is to remove oil contaminants, the air filter captures
airborne contaminants, like bugs and dirt, preventing them from entering
your engine. Left unchanged, dirty air and oil filters can lead to poor
acceleration, lower gas mileage, poor engine performance and serious
repairs.

Ensure your vehicle runs well this year and for years to come by visiting any
auto repair shop, auto service department for more tips and maintenance
products.

Other Services:

Here are some other maintenance services that require your attention for a
well performing vehicle:

 Check your coolant levels and keep it filled to the correct level to
prevent wear on your engine
 Check your wiper blades and replace if worn (don’t forget to top up the
washer fluid)
 Check your battery, most car batteries last 3-5 years
 Check your hoses and belts on a regular basis for cracks or leaks
 Check and replace old spark plugs

Save Time & Money:

To maintain a safe vehicle and reduce the chance of costly car repairs, it’s
important that you have your car regularly inspected by a good auto service
facility with certified mechanics.
