INTRODUCTION
How should a vehicle he driven to minimize fuel consumption? In this
paper we consider the case where a train is to be driven along a straight,
level track, but where speed limits may apply over parts of the track. The
journey is to be completed within a specified time using as little fuel as
possible.
Driver Safety
One way to help make driving easier and safer is to plan your trips.
TRUE OR FALSE
Instruction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and write FALSE if the
statement is wrong, write your answer on your answer sheet.
1. Drive faster than the posted speed limits; drive slower when
conditions dictate:
2. Avoid driving at dawn or dusk.
3. Get a good night's sleep the night before you start your trip.
4. Try to avoid driving during peak rush hours.
5. Choose a route that is familiar to you.
TRUE OR FALSE
1. F
2. T
3. T
4. T
5. T
Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able:
1. Manage fatigue while driving the vehicle
Introduction
Your body can't fight the need to sleep. Chemicals build up in your brain
until they reach a tipping point and you will fall asleep.
Symptoms of fatigue
yawning
sore or heavy eyes
slower reaction times
finding you're daydreaming and not concentrating on your driving
driving speed creeps up or down
impatience
impaired driving performance such as poor gear changes
stiffness and cramps
loss of motivation
MULTIPLE CHOICE
Directions: Select the best and most probable answer for each number,
write the answer on your answer sheet.
MULTIPLE CHOICE
1. C
2. A
3. D
4. A
5. A
Step-by-step procedures:
1. Counting
If this is the case, start by simply asking them to count the
number of seconds until they reach a fixed object that you determine. At
this point, you’re not concerned with the car ahead. For instance, you
would ask them to count until your car reaches the next intersection.
Have them count out-loud by saying, “one one thousand, two one
thousand, three one thousand.
2. Guessing
Once they get the hang of counting (which shouldn’t take long),
ask them to try to guess the number of seconds until they reach fixed
objects. For example, “Son, how many seconds until we reach that exit
sign?” They should make their immediate guess while you count. Once
they demonstrate success, move on to having them calculate their
following distance.
CRITERIA
YES NO
Did you….
1. Follow safe distance while driving.
2. Use three second rule while maintaining
distance.
3. Count from the fixed object until you reached it.
Equipment : Vehicle
Starting-up Drill
1. Check that the handbrake is firmly on.
2. Check that the gear lever is in neutral (or park for automatic vehicles).
5. Check all gauges and warning lights. If there is no need for action,
proceed to the next step.
6. Turn the key (second click) or push the start button to start the
engine.
7. Recheck all gauges and warning lights again.
8. Bring the clutch pedal up to the ‘friction point’ and hold your feet still.
9. Check your mirrors again and look over your right shoulder to check
that the road is clear (this is called a ‘head check’).
10. When the road is clear, release the handbrake as you gently release
the clutch pedal and apply smooth acceleration to move off.
CRITERIA
YES NO
Did you….
1. Check the vehicle before starting.
2. Wear seat belt when driving.
3. Bring license or student permit while driving.
4. Move off the vehicle properly.
5. Drive vehicle with both manual and automatic
transmission.

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Monitor and maintain vehicle performance while driving to ensure
safety and to prevent vehicle damage
INTRODUCTION
Whether having your vehicle serviced regularly or attempting to tackle
the job on your own, keeping your vehicle in good working condition will
maximize its performance and help you to save on costly repairs down the
road.
The brake system in your vehicle is imperative for keeping you and your
loved ones safe. Common signs of brake problems include a high-pitched
screeching sound when applying the brakes, brakes that are not as
responsive as they should be, a pedal that 'sinks' towards the floor, vibration
on the brake pedal or a grinding metallic sound. If you experience any of
these signs, drop by at nearest autoshop so an experienced mechanic can
take a look.

Ensuring your vehicle has adequate shocks and struts will increase your
vehicle's safety and performance. Worn shocks and struts can cause uneven
tire wear, damage suspension components, and cause unusual drift and
sway to your vehicle.
With the harsh winters we've been experiencing, more Canadians have been
relying on winter tires for increased safety in cold, wet weather. It is
important that winter tires be replaced with all-season tires in the spring, as
the rubber compound is different and performs differently in warmer
temperatures. Driving on winter tires throughout the summer is hard on
them and will decrease their lifespan.
Your car's filters have a significant impact on engine life and performance –
they also have an effect on fuel consumption and emissions.
While the oil filter's job is to remove oil contaminants, the air filter captures
airborne contaminants, like bugs and dirt, preventing them from entering
your engine. Left unchanged, dirty air and oil filters can lead to poor
acceleration, lower gas mileage, poor engine performance and serious
repairs.
Ensure your vehicle runs well this year and for years to come by visiting any
auto repair shop, auto service department for more tips and maintenance
products.
Here are some other maintenance services that require your attention for a
well performing vehicle:
Check your coolant levels and keep it filled to the correct level to
prevent wear on your engine
Check your wiper blades and replace if worn (don’t forget to top up the
washer fluid)
Check your battery, most car batteries last 3-5 years
Check your hoses and belts on a regular basis for cracks or leaks
Check and replace old spark plugs
To maintain a safe vehicle and reduce the chance of costly car repairs, it’s
important that you have your car regularly inspected by a good auto service
facility with certified mechanics.
