Chapter 2

Hardware
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this chapter, you
will be able to:
• describe information systems hardware;
• identify the primary components of a
computer and the functions they perform;
• explain the effect of the commoditization of
the personal computer
Hardware Defined
• Digital devices that you can touch:
– Desktop computers
– Laptop computers
– Mobile phones
– Tablets
– E-readers
– Storage devices such as USB drives
– Input devices such as keyboard, mouse, scanners, or stylus
– Output devices such as printers and speakers
• Digital devices process electronic signals in 1’s and 0’s
– The physical parts of a computing device
Understanding Binary
• Binary-is a system where numbers and values
are expressed 0 or 1.
What do you mean by
hardware?
Hardware?
• The term hardware distinguishes the tangible
aspects of a computing device from software,
which consists of written, machine-readable
instructions or programs that tell physical
components what to do and when to execute
the instructions.
• Hardware refers to the the physical
components that a computer system requires
to function.
Hardware
Input devices
• is a peripheral device that accepts data and feeds it into a
computer.
• an input device is a piece of equipment used to provide data
and control signals to an information processing system, such
as a computer or information appliance.

Output Devices
• is any hardware device used to send data from a computer
to another device or user.
System Unit
A system unit is the part of a computer that houses the primary
devices that perform operations and produce results for complex
calculations.
RAM
CPU and Water Block
Radiator and Cooling Fans

Motherboard Removable Media

Hard Disk and

Sound Card
Solid State Drives
Graphics Card

Power Supply Case with Wiring

What are the components of
System unit?
What are the components of System unit and its uses?

Motherboard
• The primary device of
the system unit.
• The backbone that ties
the computer's
components together
at one spot and allows
them to talk to each
other.
What are the components of System unit and its uses?

Processor
• Processor (CPU), is the logic circuitry
that responds to and processes the
basic instructions that drive a
computer.
• it carries out the commands sent to
it by the software and returns results
• Processor is the core of the
computer, also known as central
brain of computer, the component
that performs the bulk of the
computer’s work.
What are the components of System unit and its uses?
RAM

• RAM stands for random-

access memory.
• RAM aims to store and
quickly access data. All
information on it is lost after
the power is turned off.
• The RAM is connected
directly to the motherboard
and carries out a fast
exchange of information
with the processor.
How can I make my computer fast?
• RAM (Random-access Memory)
• CPU (Central Processing Unit)
What are the components of System unit and its uses?

Hard Drive
• is the central storage of
data on most computers.
• Hard Drive is designed to
store music, videos,
photos, documents, and
other files in the
computer’s permanent
memory.
What are the components of System unit and its uses?

Video Card

• A video card is a piece of

computer hardware that's
rectangular in shape with
numerous contacts on the
bottom of the card and one or
more ports .
• Video Card converts the image
in the computer’s memory into
a video signal for the monitor.
What are the components of System unit and its uses?

Power Supply
• A power supply is an electrical
device that supplies electric
power to an electrical load.
• A component that converts
electrical energy into direct
current required by the
computer.
• Power Supply provides power
to the PC. It also performs the
functions of stabilization and
protection against minor
interference in the electrical
network.
Types of Wiring
• Wire Type – Port Type – Connected Event
o CAT5 – Ethernet Port – Network/Internet
to Computer

o Serial ATA – SATA Port – Motherboard to

Disk Drives

o USB Cable – USB Port – Peripherals to

Computer

o HDMI – HDMI Port – High quality graphic

displays (Monitors) to Computer
Wired and Wireless Connectivity
• Wireless devices have
portable connectivity when
paired with services like
3G/4G or Wi-fi

• Wired devices have limited

mobility because they must
be directly connected via a
wire to the network (either a
closed network or the
internet)
Other Computing Devices

• Portable Computers
• Smartphones
• Tablet Computers
• Mobile Devices

• Integrated Computing
• Transportation: Cars/Planes/Motorcycles
• Appliances: Refrigerator/Thermostats
