GLANDULAR EPITHELIUM

Francis Ian L. Salaver, RMT, MD

GLANDS
• Composed of cells that are
specialized to produce and secrete
substances into ducts or into body
fluids
• They can be classified based on:
• (1) number of cells
o Unicellular (goblet
cells) or Multicellular
GOBLET CELLS
• Composed of a single cell
• Interspersed among other
nonsecretory epithelial cells
• Found in respiratory tract and
intestines
• Secretes mucus
• Can be stained by Periodic
acid Schiff and Alcian blue
GOBLET (unicellular)
• Goblet cells are modified epithelial
cells that mucus produce into the
surface of the airways and digestive
system.
• Airway – pseudostratified ciliated
columnar epithelium
• Goblet cells produce mucus to trap
bacteria and other foreign
substances in the inhaled air
GOBLET (unicellular)
• Goblet cells are modified epithelial
cells that mucus produce into the
surface of the airways and digestive
system.
• Intestine – goblet cells produce
mucus to provide lubrication for the
peristalsis of digested food

SALIVARY GLAND (multicellular)

GLANDULAR EPITHELIUM
• They can be classified based on:
• Absence or presence of Ducts
o Exocrine versus
Endocrine
EXOCRINE VS. ENDOCRINE
• Exocrine = secrete substances into
ducts that open onto surfaces or
lining epithelium
• Endocrine = secrete substances
(hormones) into blood and these
glands are ductless
GLANDULAR EPITHELIUM APOCRINE
• They can be classified based on: • lose small portions of their cell
body during secretion
• Manner of secretion
o Merocrine • mammary glands
o Apocrine • ceruminous gland of the ear
o Holocrine

TYPES OF EXOCRINE GLANDS

MEROCRINE HOLOCRINE
• release watery, protein-rich fluid by • Entire cell lyses (breaks apart)
exocytosis during secretion
• salivary glands • Sebaceous glands of the skin
• sweat glands • Meibomian glands of the
• pancreas eyelids
• MERO ako laway, MERO ako
pawis
• MERO ako papa
SEROUS GLANDS
• Produces enzymes or protein-rich
fluid
• Digestion of nutrients
• Dark-stained

MUCOUS GLANDS
• Produces mucus
o Light stained

GLANDULAR EPITHELIUM
• They can be classified based on:
• Type of secretion
o Serous – enzyme
(dark stained)
o Mucous- mucus
GLANDULAR EPITHELIUM
• They can be classified based on:
• Type of morphology
o Simple
SIMPLE TUBULAR
o Compound
o Acinar/Alveolar • Colon or Large intestine
o Tubular • Crypt of Lieberkuhn
Simple Coiled Tubular = Sweat
Glands
SIMPLE BRANCHED TUBULAR GLAND

SIMPLE BRANCHED ACINAR

Simple Branched Tubular = Gastric

Glands
PaPa-Mamma Duo = SubSub Compound Tubuloacinar = Mixed
Serous And Mucous

Compound Acinar = SEROUS glands
