THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

1. Traditionally, the Gospel of John was written by John the apostle. The apostle identifies
himself in the book as “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” and states that “this is the disciple who
testifies to these things,” (21:20-24). However, recent scholars have suggested two more views
on the authorship of the Gospel of John. Some propose that another John called John the elder,
drawing from 2 John 1. Others have suggested that it was the disciple of the apostle John, who
got the information from John.

2. The central theme of the Gospel of John is that eternal life comes through belief in Christ, as
is reflected in 1:1; 3:16; 8:58; 10:30 and 20:31.

3. In order to evince the deity of Christ, John gives the following evidences

a. He equates Jesus, the word that became flesh to God, when he writes that in the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and that the Word was God Himself, (Jn 1:1).
b. He presents Christ as the Creator of all things, (Jn 1:2)
c. He presents Christ as the life giver (Jn 1:3)
d. The miracles John records also give evidence of Christ’s deity.

4. According to John, the only condition for receiving salvation is unless one be born again; born
of water and the Spirit. This John cites in the first discourse of Jesus concerning new birth
recorded in chapter 3:1-21.

5. According to John, Jesus performed many miracles. He, John selected some of them and
recorded them. The apostle then reveals that these were written that people might believe that
Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God and that by believing they might have life in his name.

6. The following are key words in the book of John: abide, ask, believe, eternal, Father, glorify,
glory, heaven, hour, the Jews, judge, judgment, know, life, light, love, receive, take, behold,
send, sign, miracle, sin, sinner, truth, truly, true, truly; I tell you the truth, testify, testimony,
and world.
7. The book of John differs from the Synoptic Gospels in the following ways:
