Zero Hunger

Introduction

Zero Hunger is an app that is used as a platform where people who have a lot of leftover food

at their party or function can list that and address and on the other side NGOs that provide

free food to the needy people can contact them and utilize that food. The app will be a free

platform and will generate revenues through In-app advertising revenue model. This way the

business would be able to generate revenues. In the later stages of business, the app could

generate revenue through sponsorship as bigger brands like Zomato are also working towards

feeding India.

Impact Opportunity

Over 20 crore people go to sleep with empty stomach in India. It is the aim of the government

to eradicate hunger till 2030. There is enough food in India to feed them but the problem is

that privileged people have excess food and poor people are not able to afford food for

themselves. So, the idea of this app is based on the fact that food worth Rs.92000 crores is

wasted every year in India whereas on the other side 15% of the population goes hungry

every day in India, 1 out of 4 children are malnourished. The app will help the food being

wasted in parties, canteens, meetings, and many other places be used for feeding the poor

people. NGOs like Annakshetra(Rajasthan), Double Roti(Delhi) All India Roti Bank

Trust(Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh) channel surplus

food from everywhere and then distribute it, there work will be made easier if an application

would list all the places that have surplus food. Many people are conscious about wasting
food and with the save food campaigns run by different organisations, people will list about

surplus food.

Theory of Change

The goal of this business is to eliminate hunger in India. The long-term goal is to work with

larger businesses and work towards greater good of the poor people. The app is a mobile app

which can be downloaded from Play Store as well as from App Store, Android and iOS users

both can use the application. The app is based on Augmented GPS technology that will use

cell ID and geolocation which in turn will provide the accurate location of the person who has

surplus food. Then the NGOs who need this food can easily reach the person. The person

installing the app has to first create a basic ID that would provide his or her name, mobile

number and email ID. There are two sections in the app, one for the needy and one for the

provider, user can switch between these two sections according to their need. The app also

consists of an option to donate, this amount will go to the NGOs who work for feeding the

poor people. The immediate change because of this app will be that the people who want to

save food will get a way of donating food and the organisations and individuals who want to

help the poor people will get a platform where they can get free food as well as donations.

Both the parties can interact through mobile number as their contact details will be available

on the app and then discuss about when to come to get the excess food. The app has a feature

of filtering the radius area in which one wants to check about the surplus food available. The

app will be a cause for greater good as everyone whether individual or organisations could to

their bit in feeding the poor people and saving food if they have surplus food. The app could

even collaborate with the NGO’s that they use this app to collect food, by this way they could

locate and procure the food easily and the reach of the app would also increase. The NGO’s
can also post about the app to increase the awareness about the app and encourage people to

use it in case they have surplus food. This could be like an advertisement campaign for the

app, so that more and more people get to know about the existence of this app.

Strategy for Scale

The number of people impacted by this app will be around 190 million (the figure for

undernourished people in India) because this app can be used by the people all over India, so

anyone whether a restaurant, an event planner or even an individual can help their surplus

food to reach a needy person. Many people do not want to take the pain of finding and going

to a place where they can donate the food. So, this app will be a way where they can just

update their location and the NGO’s will contact them and take away the extra food. This

would also help eliminate food wastage as well as save someone from hunger. The app would

impact a large number of people with the same impact. I would only need around 6000

rupees to develop the app which is the fees of developers, charged on the hourly basis and

1800 rupees to publish the app on the Google play store. I could the business by my own self

as the application development does not need a lot of money to run. Mobile apps are a huge

business, as it is expected that mobile apps will generate a revenue of around 613 billion

dollars by the year 2025. The app is just a medium to work for a greater cause. The logistic

service would be arranged by the NGO or the person with surplus food, the app will not be

involved with the logistics. Maybe in the later stages of the business the app could work in

collaboration with delivering partner like Zomato and Swiggy because even they are working

for eradicating hunger and they have a wide network of delivery partners already working for

them. In addition to that they also already have contacts with the restaurants who could

provide the surplus food which eventually gets wasted if nit sold or consumed by the end of
the day. In this way the app could extend its reach and achieve its basic two goals of

eradicating hunger and stop food wastage.
