I. MODULE TITLE

“Be the Leader you were born to be: Break Free, Dare to Lead”

II. RATIONALE

In a rapidly evolving world and work place, equality is greatly noticeable

everywhere. However, someone must still lead to avoid chaos. People like

managers, CEOs, or other higher positions in a company have the nature in

leading people. They act as the brain and all the other workers under them is

the body. They must synchronize and cooperate with one another to be able

to function well and reach success. But, is being called a "leader" enough to

actually lead them? What techniques and skills should one possess to be

able to lead? What different leadership styles are in existence and which

among them is the most effective way? These questions gave us the initiative

and motivation to do a seminar about leadership. We aim to share knowledge

about leadership to help them to learn more about their strengths and if they

can someday be called a Leader

III. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session, participants should be able to:

a. Realized that every individual have different leadership styles and this

leadership styles have advantages and disadvantages by knowing it

the participants can sort what leadership style can be effective for

them.

b. Enhance their leadership skills for them to lead effectively in the future.

c. Be capable to lead and come out of their comfort zone.

IV. ICE BREAKER

FIND YOUR TEAMMATES! NO MAN IS AN ISLAND.

Materials: Pieces of Puzzle with sentences (prepared by facilitators)

Time frame: 15 minutes

Set Up and Instructions

1. Inside the survival kit that will be provide by the facilitator there are

pieces of puzzle that have passage. (see appendix)

2. The player must find their team mates by solving the puzzle.

3. After fixing the puzzle the team need to shout VIVA! And raised

their hands for the facilitators to recognize them.

4. The players need to read aloud the message in the paper and have

a representative explain the passage if it’s true or false.

5. The facilitator will judge the winning team by the time they finished

the puzzle and how they interpret the passage.

Processing Questions

1. For the group. Who is the one gather all your team mates in one

place? Does he/she have a characteristic of a leader? How?

2. For the team, what factors do you think it’s been hard for you to

gather in one place and fixed the puzzle?

3. For the representative. Is the passage in the puzzle true or false?

Explain.

V. LECTURETTE

5.0 What is Leader and what is Leadership?

 Leadership is the act of leading a group of people or an organization to

achieve a certain goal.

 Leader is the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or

country.

V.1 CONCEPTUAL MISUNDERSTANDING OF LEADERSHIP

1. Leadership is the process of inducing a subordinate to behave in desired

manner

2. Leadership is one form of dominance, in which the followers more or less

willingly accept direction and control by another person.

3. Leadership is the process of providing direction, energizing others and

attaining their commitment to the leaders cause.

4. Leadership is a rank, it is not your choice

V.2 CHARACTERISTIC OF LEADERSHIP BASED ON WARREN

BENNICS

1. Provide direction and meaning to the people they are leading

2. Favor action and risk taking

3. Generate trust

4. Provide hope

V.3 LEADERSHIP STYLES

1. AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP (AUTHORITARIAN)

 Power is centralized and decision making is assumed by the leader.

The leader determines the policy of the group.

A. ADVANTAGES OF AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP

a. Foster decision and implementation of goals. Leaders have high

sense of responsibility

b. Less competent member can but to use, since they simply follow

orders

B. DISADVANTAGE AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP

a. More frustration and conflicts among members since they are not

asked to share opinions or decision; have low consideration to

others

b. Stifle membership drives and creativity, loss of individual among

members

2. DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP (PARTICIPATIVE)

 Decentralized authority, consults followers, decisions are not one

sided or unilateral. Leader asks members to express their ideas

suggestions. People oriented

A. ADVANTAGES

a. Better understanding between follower and the leaders can select

their own working partner.

b. Encourage constructive suggestions and allows member to

make choices.

B. DISADVANTAGE

a. Members tend to be assertive and arrogant

b. Lack of discipline and limited control of the leader

3. LAISSEZ FAIRE/ FREE RAIN LEADERSHIP

 avoid power and responsibilities

A. ADVANTAGE

a. More freedom and independence

b. Followers play major role in decision making

B. DISADVANTAGE

a. Highly permissive that might lead to chaos and disunity

b. Lack of unity among members, no guidance supervision

V.4 TYPES OF LEADERSHIP MOTIVATION

1. POSITIVE TYPE - emphasizes praises, support and reward for

followers

2. NEGATIVE TYPE - tendency to be domineering and superior with

other people. Reprimand is given in the presence of others; there

are penalties and displayed authority

V.5 LEADERSHIP SKILLS

a. Technical skills- refer to person's knowledge and ability on any type of

process of techniques

b. Human skills- ability to work and interact effectively with people

c. Conceptual skill - ability to comprehend fully in terms of models, abstract

relationship and theoretical framework.

V.6 MEASURING LEADERSHIP

a. Peer rating - nominating individual to be a leader and assess the

performance and accomplishments from the point of view of the

followers and group members

b. Observers rating scale - assessment of leaders based in behavioral

dimensions

c. Identification of appointed leader - locates the person occupying

leadership positions ex. Chairman , president

d. Self-rating inventory - subjects are asked to evaluate their own

leadership

V.7 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LEADERS AND MANAGERS

 Leaders are not managers

 The manager administers; the leader innovates

 The manager is a copy, the leader is s original

 The manager maintains; the leader develops

 The manage relies on control ; the leader inspires trust

 The manager has a short- range of view ; the leader has a long term

perspective

 Manager ask how and when; the leader asks why

 Manager imitates ; leader originates

 Manager does things right; the leader does the right thing

 manager and leaders: managers having training , while the leader

V.8 FUNCTION OF LEADERS

1. Leader as an executive - leaders does not ordinarily carry out the

necessary work he assigns it to other group members

2. Leader as a planner- leaders deciding the ways and means by which

the group shall achieve it ends.

3. Leader as a policy maker

4. Leader as an expert - leader Is often distinguished as a source of

readily available information and Skills

5. Leader as a surveyor of rewards and punishment

6. Leader as a arbitrator and mediators

7. Leader as an exemplar - leaders mat serve as model of behaviors

beliefs ,values, and norms of the individual members

V.9 EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP

1. Initiating - task motivated or goal directed

2. Regulating - control rewards and punishment , ability to minimized

conflict

3. Information- giving shows high quality decision making; receiving

monitor communication reduced goal ambiguity

4. Supporting - gives mutual trust ; warm and affectionate ;

coordinate activities

5. Evaluating - willingness to make; flexibility.

5.10 INEFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP

1. Indifference - cool; detached; habitually Absent

2. Conflict- unresolved; avoidance of responsibility

3. Rejection - refuses to accept ideas

4. Anxiety - manifest emotional instability, indecisiveness and

pessimistic out look

5. Self-centeredness- self Righteousness; using extensive

vocabulary, using jargons

6. Hostility - demonstrate a contempt for leadership of hypercritical

group work

VI. ACTIVITY PROPER

6.1 PROTECT MY TEAM, I AM THE LEADER

Materials: Blind fold


Piece of fabric serves as flags
Time frame: 20 minutes

Procedure:

1. There is 2 opposition team, each is composed of 5 members.

One will serves as a leader and the other will serves as

teammates.

2. Each team will form a straight line holding their teammate who

is in their front. The teammates are blindfolded and are not

allowed to talk. The only allowed to talk are leaders.

3. Each member of the team will have a fabric that will be tied in

their waist that will serves as their flags.

4. The leaders need to get the flag of their opponent’s team at the

same time must able protect themselves and their teammates

from getting their flags.

5. The first leader who will get a flag from opponent’s team will win

this game.

Processing questions

1. For the leaders, did you had a hard time protecting your

teammates? Why?

2. For the teammates, how did you overcome to move without talking?

Did you listen to your leaders’ instruction?

3. Does trusting your leaders and team mates helps in this activity?

6.2 WE NEED TO FIND THE CULPRIT

Materials: Mysterious Case Study (see appendix J)

News paper

Time frame: 30 minutes


Procedure
1. This game will test everyone Technical skills, Human skills and

Conceptual skill.

2. The facilitator will give an incident where someone is murdered, the team

must solved who is the killer in this case.

3. To catch the murderer the teams must solved the clues. However, the

clues are across the river which is the other side of the room.

4. Four members of the team need to cross the river to get the clues by

using newspaper serving as their boat. Individuals’ foot are not allowed to

recede the newspaper, if it happened they need to go back from the

starting point and start again.

5. After getting the clues across the other side they must go back to their

other teammates and solved the crime.

6. The fastest team who will identify of the murder will win this game.

Processing questions

1. For the group, did someone emerge as your leader? How?

2. For the team, how did you solved the puzzle? Did your group

use some techniques?

3. Is there any conflict in your group when solving the puzzle?

6.3 WE NEED A BRIDGE!

Materials: Plastic Straw

Pins

Time frame: 20 minutes

Procedure

1. This activity will enhance individuals’ character of being innovative.

2. Facilitator will give each team plastic straws and pins, out of the pins and

straws the teams must create the longest and strongest bridge they can

make

3. The time allotted in this activity is 20 minutes

4. After the time given, the facilitators will compare the length of the bridge

to other and the facilitator will test the bridge strength by putting a rubrics

cube at the center of the bridge.

5. The bridge that is longest and strongest will win in this activity

1. For the team, how did you come up on idea on how you will build your

bridge?

2. For individuals, what are variables that limit you to make the bridge with

the group?

3. How did you overcome the variable that make you limit on making your

bridge?
