Professional Development: Task 1 – Identifying


job roles in your chosen creative media industry

As an Esports student it is essential you are aware of the wide variety of jobs you may be
able to do within this industry. This first task is about you demonstrating exploration of
some of the roles which are found within Esports, writing a little about your understanding
of what they mean and why they interest you.

You are required to pick the FIVE career/roles you are most interested in from the link
provided at the bottom of this document. For EACH ONE write an explanation IN YOUR
OWN WORDS of what you think this role is and why you have chosen it. Be clear and
specific in your answers, showing off your knowledge and enthusiasm; vague answers such
as “this looks interesting” will not be accepted.

Esports Observer, controls in-game camera for esports broadcasts important aspects of this job include
identifying key plays in a competition highlighting important moments of a match. You will often be working
very closely with casters and the production crew, you will need to edit footage and be active on social
media to keep up with whatever is happening within that games community.
What is it/what are the important aspects of it?

Why might you want to do it? If you are interested or passionate about a certain game this would be a great
way to get involved, you would be part of a broadcast team that can introduce the game to new players and
grow its audience. Also, if you don’t like being on camera this job will let you be relatively unknown while
still providing a fundamental role for an esports event.

What skills/knowledge/experience might you need?


Firstly, you will need to have complete knowledge about all aspects of the game to understand when and
where impactful and interesting plays are happening. You will also need to be able to concentrate and keep
focus for long periods of time, as many matches in some games can last up to 3 hours and you will be
required to keep up with the game while making sure you are capturing all the best moments while keeping
it smooth and providing an easy-to-follow show for the audience.
What barriers might you have to doing this job?
Getting your first job can be challenging as esports events don’t happen all the time and live ones (LAN) are
even rarer so there aren’t many opportunities if you are not known.
How might you get over these barriers?
Having experience will help as you will be more likely to be chosen to observe for an event, working at
grassroots events and even volunteering are great ideas to get your foot in the door and get to know people
within that space. Networking is very important if you want to increase your chances of getting work in this
field.

What is it/what are the important aspects of it? EVENT MANAGER Responsible for making sure an event goes
ahead as planned meaning that enough people buy tickets and go to the event and that it runs smoothly
throughout. Things such as acquiring venues and sponsorship are also vital.

Why might you want to do it? It is a very tough job but also very rewarding. When an even runs as expected
you have provided a fun entertaining event that many people can enjoy and if you like problem solving
there will always be many issues for you to solve as there is with most large events with many people
involved.

What skills/knowledge/experience might you need? Being good at communication and negotiation is key. People
will need to know what role they are playing, what they need to do and how exactly it needs to be done,
you would be responsible telling them this and to communicate what needs to be done by everyone around
you. You may also be responsible for other things such as online views and physical ticket sales and getting
positive feedback from viewers and organisation, so you will also be working closely with people such as the
social media teams and ticket vendors.

What barriers might you have to doing this job?


This would be a very competitive job with huge amounts of responsibility, requiring multi-tasking ans
communication skills. You will have to bring something to the job that other people perhaps can’t.
How might you get over these barriers? Experience is essential, you don’t necessarily need to start your career
in esports having experience within any event can be very useful. You can also start to make a portfolio of
what you have done and create a good CV. Start with small event and eventually you can work your way up
to the big events.

What is it/what are the important aspects of it? COMMUNITY MANAGER Responsible for looking after a
community for a particular game or other areas of espoerts. May include engaging on social media and
being very active on forums and chatrooms inside a community. You will also need to identify what the
audience and community want from your organisation and get to know people to know how best to deliver
a product or service to them.
Why might you want to do it?
To give people an easier and more enjoyable experience being involved with a community. You can give
people a platform to communicate to your organisation with and help people get the most out of being a
fan or however they chose to be part of a particular gaming community.
What skills/knowledge/experience might you need?
Social media and community experience a reasonable amount of content creation and possibly streaming
skills. You may organise how content is made for your employer, attend events and assistant in PR
responsibility among other things.
What barriers might you have to doing this job?
It can be hard to get recognised for this job as it is competitive, and you need to be liked and respected by a
community if you want to have this job.
How might you get over these barriers? You can start by getting involved with any community you feel strongly
about, small local communities could be very useful for you as you can gain experience from this,” get as
much experience as you can by volunteering your time to a community, you’re passionate about”.

What is it/what are the important aspects of it? COACH/ANALYST Similar to traditional sports a coach will help a
team train against other teams and improve as a unit, you will work closely with players, you will motivate
them, develop strategies and grow individual players skills and quality of the teams’ skills together.

Why might you want to do it? If you are passionate about a game and want to be part of a team this can be a really
exciting and rewarding job.

What skills/knowledge/experience might you need?


You will need the ability to make effective tactical decisions and develop strategies on the spot.
You will also be tracking stats, patterns of other teams and changes and updates within a game,
there will also be administrative and organizational duties such as scheduling training, recruiting
players and negotiating earnings

What barriers might you have to doing this job? Not only do you need to build relationships with players
and develop them you may also encounter technical ane social problems that you need to fix such
as internet issues or two players that don’t get along. This job also has a hight turnover rat with
most teams changing rosters and coaches every six or seven months on average, so you need to
keep your skills at a very high standard

How might you get over these barriers?


You can start coaching in any sport or competition to get experience you will need to prove
yourself in lower divisions before moving up to the big leagues. Qualifications in things like
coaching and/or sport science can also really give you a boost in starting your career in this field.

What is it/what are the important aspects of it? Product Manager


Typically you will be responsible for a specific product or project and lead the development of it to
meet the needs of the customer. Important aspects include developing business strategies for a
product, roadmaps for development and some elements from a PR and marketing skillset.
In the esports industry the product or project you may have too look after could be a ongoing
league or specific event you will work with several departments to make sure everything runs
smoothly and keep close to a schedule.

Why might you want to do it? You may often be tasked with creating initiatives to drive customer
engagement and come up with creative solutions to problems that can arise when creating a
product or scheduling an event. You might enjoy the problem-solving aspect of the job along with
being the leader of a large production. This job is often compared to being a ship's captain who
drives the product forward.

What skills/knowledge/experience might you need?


You will need to be a strong communicator with a good business sense along with being a good
leader. Having Experience in sales or project management especially in esports will be very useful.
It is also very important that you have a creative mindset and be able to think of different ways to
overcome obstacles.

What barriers might you have to doing this job?


Depending on who you work for you may have to travel a lot which can make the job difficult and
possibly more stressful. This job can often put you under a lot of pressure to make good decisions
at the right times. sometimes many people will be relying on you to keep something going.

How might you get over these barriers?


Being a very motivated person can help when you are traveling a lot and if you are very good at
organisation you can keep on top of any issues that arise. Riot games description of a perfect
product manager includes “skills at moving multiple tasks to completion” “an influential people-
person" and to “find opportunities to innovate”. Having These skills can often make you stand out
from the rest and can usually take the pressure off if you have many responsibilities to deal with
as you can easily keep up with organisation and use you communication skills to delegate tasks
and streamline product development.
