Popular Dances

01 in a particular period of time which aims to give
02
the participants a source of enjoyment.

03 may be arranged in different formation like in
04 circles or even in lines which developed later on

Early 1950’s

• The Chicken Dance in the 1950’s was started by a Swiss

accordion player named Werner Thomas.
• He began to play it at wedding to make the attendees look comic.
Early 1960’s
• The Twist was popularized in 1960’s by Chubby Checker. It is
hardly considered a dance. It’s just merely twisting back and forth.
• The Mashed Potato also in the 1960's was the twist but only a
weirder name. The dance begins by stepping backward with one
foot with that heel tilted inward. The foot is positioned slightly
behind the other (stationary) foot. With the weight on the ball of the
starting foot, the heel is then swiveled outward. The same process
is repeated with the other foot: step back and behind with heel
inward, pivot heel out, and so on. The pattern is done as many
times as the performer desires. The step may be incorporated in
various dances either as a separate routine or as a styling of
standard steps.
