Introduction

Software used for creating digital images is not what it used to be. In the last
decade alone our tools have evolved dramatically, giving powers that was once
reserved for entire teams of artists to a single person working from their home
computer. However along with that shift we also got the abhorring Software-as-a-
Service (or SaaS) subscription model which alongside its seemingly affordable
pricing brings spyware for software vendors to be able to check our computers for
licenses. Well if you are like me, rejoice, because like we previously talked about
software used for CGI is not what it used to be.

Nowadays we have a plethora of options to choose from, many of which come close to
their proprietary counterpart’s capabilities in most ways even if they lack the
machine learning powered features that some vendors have enriched their software
with. The best example of this is Blender, which has been used to create more than
15 high quality movies with studios such as Ubisoft and Barnstorm VFX using it in
their production pipelines for shows you may have seen such as The Man in the High
Castle.
Free and Open Source with an asterisk

The following list contains programs that are free as in free to access, and modify
to your heart’s content. They are released under a variety of licenses some of
which restrict the ways in which the software can be used or redistributed but they
are united under the flag of open source.

Notes

If you are familiar with the field of CGI you may notice that with the gamut of
options mentioned above, we today have sufficient resources in the FOSS ecosystem
to run a small studio without paying a cent for software. Add to that list Linux,
Nextcloud, Gitlab and BigBlueButton and you may scale your capabilities much as you
like, on premises or otherwise for very little cost, depending ofcourse on the type
of projects you are working for and the services you are offering.

Do you think i’ve missed a cool package worth bringing attention to? Are you a
developer with a cool program you would like to share ? Feel free to send me a
message and let me know about it.
