Jineop Line 4 Extension Project
(Engineering Geology)

• Tunnel alignment is mostly passing through fair to good rock quality

• Presence of quaternary alluvial deposit is critical

• Detailed site characterization should be done

• No indication of ground water table in drawings

• Based on rock borings RMR rating assigned to rock

• Excavation system and support to ground is based only on RMR

Jineop Line 4 Extension Project
(Tunneling History)
Case Failure mechanism Damages Remedial works
• 17 Nov 1991, 18:50 : blasting • no human casualties • soil dumping immediately
- 21:05 : total collapse (1,000m3) • 2-lane road collapsed after collapse
• thin weathered rock cover • stop of gas supply • face shotcrete and invert
A • inflow of soil and groundwater (5,000 households) Close (t=1.5~2.0m)
• weathered granite(WG) at the face • damage to lighting poles and • cement milk grouting and
• very close to the existing stream traffic light poles curtain wall grouting
• 27 Nov 1991, 10:40 : blasting • no human casualties • grouting: cement mortal
- 16:00 : rock falls at the face • 80 households evacuated cement milk grout
- 22:00 : soil and water inflow (D=20m) • electricity and water main • lowering of groundwater level

B
• 28 Nov 1991,
- 03:20 : additional collapse (D=25m)
collapsed
• (3-story bldg) slipped into
(3m/day)
• pumping/fore poling for
• Insufficient site investigation
• WG at the face crater re-excavation
• permeability: (1.0×10-4 ~2.0×10-5 cm/sec) • remedial cost: $4.5million
• 11 Feb 1992, road header excavation • no human casualties • dumping soils into collapsed • Inappropriate excavation method
- 04:30 : ravelling • 4-lane road collapsed area (240 tons)
• significant inflow of ground • service culvert (6m×3m) • dumping ready-mixed-

• Negligence of ground water inflow

C water (100-130 exposed (including 154kv concrete (105tons)
• about 4.5 ton of soil flew into face: D=10m electricity cable) • grouting
• heavily WG at the face • passengers delay
• 7 Jan 1993, 03:30 : blasting • no human casualties • grouting: cement mortal,
• 2-lane road collapsed
• No blasting effect and stability analysis
- collapse after removing materials cement milk and LW(160 holes)
collapse size : 0.7m x 1.2m • supply stop of water main • mortal injection beneath sewer
D - started at the left side of crown ( =200mm) culvert
- soil inflow: 900m3, groundwater:300 min • sewer culvert were broken • reduce inflow of groundwater
• WG & DGS at the face • 40 households evacuated using chemical grouting
• 1 Feb 1993, ring cut • no human casualties • soil dumping into collapsed Remedial cost-6.2 million US dollar?
- 08:30 : rock fall and collapse • 6 excavation equipments area (5,500m3)
(oval shape D=10-30 m) were buried • chemical grouting (76 holes) Think of proper site characterization
• compaction grouting (300
E - inflow of soil with groundwater
• alluvium & DGS at the face holes)
would have expenditures??
• beneath the existing stream • remedial cost : $1.7million

Jineop Line 4 Extension Project
(Summary)

• Excavation and support system based on RMR rating

• How RMR could be correlated to engineering properties for stability analysis?

• Bedding planes, Foliation including cleavage, Fractures (Joints), Fault and

Shear zones are not mentioned in investigation report

• Porosity, permeability and ground water inflow characteristics of fractured

rock

• Ground water locations
