5. (a) What is the function of auxiliary winding in single phase induction motor?
(b) What are the advantages of Capacitor run motor compared to capacitor start motor?

6. (a) Draw & explain the Torque-Slip characteristics of a 3 phase induction motor.
(b) A 4 pole, 3 ph, 50 Hz slip ring Induction motor rotates at 1440 rpm with slip ring terminals short
circuited. The rotor resistance and standstill rotor reactance are 0.1 ohm and 0.6 ohm
respectively. If an extra resistance of 0.1 ohm per phase is added to the rotor circuit, what will
be the new full load speed? (7+ 8)

7. (a) Why starters are required for starting an Induction Motor?


(b) A 4 pole, 3 phase, 50 Hz induction motor supplies a useful torque of 180 N-m at 4 % slip.
Calculate (i) rotor input (ii) motor input (iii) efficiency. (Friction &Windage loss is 600 Watt and
stator loss is 1200 Watt.) (5+10)

8. (a) Explain Cogging and crawling of 3 phase Induction motor.


(b) What are the methods of braking of 3 phase Induction motor? Explain any one method.

9. (a) What are the advantages of placing field winding in rotor in an Alternator?
