Explanation : Government of India had appointed Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar, Professor Emeritus at
Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), as the part-time chairperson of the National Statistical
Commission (NSC) of India for a period of three years. He will take up this role as an additional
responsibility while continuing as Professor Emeritus at CMI. He joined CMI as a visiting professor in
2010, and officiated as the Director of CMI from January 2011 to April 2021.
Mr. Karandikar is widely known for his three decades of work on probability theory as well as
applications of mathematics and statistics to real world questions. He has designed, supervised and
analysed nationwide opinion polls for the Indian parliamentary elections as well State assemblies
since 1998.

for a 10-year period, between 2014-2024.
A) What is Kaziranga Project?
The Kaziranga project is a part of a larger Assam Project on Forest and Biodiversity
Conservation (APFBC).
o The Assam government, with the support of AFD, launched the APFBC in 2012, to restore
forest ecosystems, protect wildlife and enhance the livelihood of the forest-dependent
communities.
The project conceptualised the reforestation of 33,500 hectares of land and the training of
10,000 community members in alternate livelihoods by 2024.
B) What are Key Facts about Kaziranga National Park?
Location:
o It is located in the State of Assam and covers 42,996 Hectare (ha).
o It is the single largest undisturbed and representative area in the Brahmaputra Valley
floodplain.
Legal Status:
o It was declared as a National Park in 1974.
o It has been declared a tiger reserve since 2007. It has a total tiger reserve area of 1,030
sq km with a core area of 430 sq. km.
International Status:
o It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
o It is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.
Biodiversity:
o It is the home of the world's most one-horned rhinos.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has the highest density of one-horned rhinos in the
world and second highest number of Rhinos in Assam after Kaziranga National
Park.
o Much of the focus of conservation efforts in Kaziranga are focused on the 'big four'
species - Rhino, Elephant, Royal Bengal tiger and Asiatic water buffalo.
o Kaziranga is also home to 9 of the 14 species of primates found in the Indian
subcontinent.
Rivers and Highways:
o National Highway 37 passes through the park area.
o The park also has more than 250 seasonal water bodies, besides the Diphlu River running
through it.

The Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize recognises and celebrates excellence in non-fiction
writings on modern or contemporary India by writers from all nationalities. It carries a cash award
of Rs 15 lakh, a trophy and a citation.
Established in 2018, the Kamaladevi NIF Book Prize builds on the New India Foundation’s mission of
sponsoring high-quality research and writing on all aspects of Independent India.
Previous winners of the prize are Milan Vaishnav (2018), Ornit Shani (2019), Amit Ahuja and Jairam
Ramesh (jointly, 2020), and Dinyar Patel (2021).
