FORM AND USE

Form of Past Perfect Continuous tense:


Past Perfect Continuous is formed with the help of auxiliary verb HAD and verb “to be”
in THIRD FORM “BEEN” and verb with ending -ING.
An auxiliary verb HAD doesn’t changes its form depending on the pronoun standing
before.

FOR EXAMPLE: I HAD BEEN WRITING a letter.


You HAD BEEN DOING a Homework.
We HAD BEEN DRIVING a car.
They HAD BEEN FINISHING their work.
She HAD BEEN COOKING a dinner.

To form a Negative form we need to add particle “not”

FOR EXAMPLE: I HAD NOT BEEN WRITING a letter.


You HAD NOT BEEN DOING a Homework.
We HAD NOT BEEN DRIVING a car.
They HAD NOT BEEN FINISHING their work.
She HAD NOT BEEN COOKING a dinner.

An auxiliary verb HAD has short form in both positive and negative forms:

POSITIVE FORMS: I’D BEEN WRITING a letter.


You’D BEEN DOING a Homework.
We’D BEEN DRIVING a car.
They’D BEEN FINISHING their work.
She’D BEEN COOKING a dinner.

NEGATIVE FORMS: I HADN’T BEEN WRITING a letter.


You HADN’T BEEN DOING a Homework.
We HADN’T BEEN DRIVING a car.
They HADN’T BEEN FINISHING their work.
She HADN’T BEEN COOKING a dinner.

A Question form of Past Perfect Continuous:

1. General or Yes/No Questions:

HAD I BEEN COOKING? – Yes, I HAD. / No, I HADN’T.


they BEEN WORKING? – Yes, they HAD. / No, they HADN’T.

she BEEN WORKING? – Yes, she HAD. / No, she HADN’T.

2. Special Questions / WH-Questions:

Common USE of Past Perfect Continuous tense:

1. Action continuing over a period up to a specific time in the past– time expressions:
for, since.

FOR EXAMPLE: I had been cooking dinner for 2 hours before she returned home.
She had been watching TV since 11 p.m. before her mother called her.

2. Past actions of certain duration which had visible results or effects in the past.

FOR EXAMPLE: The car was dirty because it had been driving across the field.
