Introduction
I will give a brief background about TESCO and Homeplus. The way they have been growing since
their inception. The strategies put into place to win over the challenges Homeplus came across in
the past and the challenges which are in store for Homeplus and what steps it will be taking to
overcome and their side-effects.
TESCO was founded by Jack Cohen in 1919 and the brand name Tesco came into being when it
started selling tea called Tesco Tea. Later on, Tesco became the biggest retail store in UK with a
market share of about 30 per cent in the 2000s. It was one of the fastest growing retailers in the
world due to its excellent international business. Its strategy to grow its products in high growth
markets along with diversification of its products and businesses led it to become the fourth largest
retailer in the world with a CAGR of 10.9 per cent which was highest among the top ten retailers
between 2004 to 2009. In addition to UK, Tesco had operations in countries such as Ireland,
Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Turkey, U.S., Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, India, China and Korea.
In 1999 Tesco decided to invest in the Korean market due to Korean government allowing foreign
players investing into the Korean economy because of the Asian financial crisis. Lot of foreign retail
players got into the Korean market like Wal-Mart and others. This also led to the birth of Homeplus-
a collaboration, between Korean behemoth Samsung and Tesco, though Tesco had the majority of
the shares. This collaboration between local and foreign player was extremely beneficial as Tesco
had huge profits by implementing strategies and measures that the local Koreans loved. The
strategy of local employees, local beliefs and tastes had a magical effect on the population and
Homeplus turned to be hugely successful in future. While most of the foreign players left the Korean
market, Homeplus turned out to be the 2nd largest retailer in Korea and had already had won over
the hearts of the Koreans.
But the scenario has changed over the years and the start of Super super markets have started
protests from small business owners all over Korea which led to important bills to be placed in the
Korean parliament. These bills if passed could majorly hamper the growth Homeplus and other
major retailers in Korea. A law which forces big retail outlets to be shut down on second and fourth
Sunday of every month have already been implemented. There are other two bills one which
disallows any outlets to be opened around 500m of small business owners. The other bill which is
more disputable can close an outlet if it is proven they affect small business owners. Apart from
these the tastes of marketing of Koreans are changing fast. They are going for online and mobile
shopping more. So this is the future of the retail market and we have to deal very cautiously to
make sure we carve our way out in the right manner to be come out trumps as one of the bests in
the business.
Conclusion
We have discussed about our humble beginnings and the heights we have reached so far. The future
is exciting though we are facing a few challenges as we had in the past. I am sure we will come up
trumps this time around also and we need the strong support from TESCO as we had been getting
for all these years. Looking forward to the future with optimism and cautiousness.
