INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENT
Kindly note the following points regarding the format of the assignment. Students are required to
strictly follow the instructions given below regarding the format.
• Submit the hard copy of all Exercises (no soft copy will be accepted).
• Clear writing and ordered answers are highly appreciated.
• Exercise should be written only on ordinary A4 size paper. Leave 2 cm margin on all
sides and at least 2 lines after each answer in an exercise.
• Write exercise number for each answer.
• Matric number should be written on the right-hand corner above the margin of the first
page.
Exercise 1: 5 Marks
The test score for an entire university is 77 with a standard deviation of 9. what is the probability
of a random sample of 5 students score above 85?
Exercise 2: 5 Marks
The test score for an entire university is 77. The standard deviation of a random sample of 40
students is 9. what is the probability the average test score for sample is score above 85?
Exercise 3: 5 Marks
The test score for an entire university is 80. The standard deviation of a random sample of 10
students is 9. what is the probability the average test score for sample is score above 85?
Exercise 4: 5 Marks
Suppose that the mean cholesterol level for male aged 50 is 241. An investigator whishes to
examine whether cholesterol levels are significantly reduced by modifying diet only slightly. A
random sample of 12 patients agrees to participate in the study and follow the modified diet for 3
months. After 3 months, their cholesterol levels are measured and the mean cholesterol level in
the sample is 235 with a standard deviation of 12.5. Based on the data, is there statistical
evidence that the modified diet reduces cholesterol?

Exercise 5: 5 Marks
You are a shrimp culturist. Anyhow, you have heard that a new type of shrimp feed may lead to
increase fish growth. You are excited to use new type of shrimp feed. You know that a shrimp
on standard feed weighs, on average, 100g per individual per 3 months. You feed a sample of 25
shrimp the new feed for 3 months. The average weight of a individual shrimp on the new feed is
129 g with a standard deviation of 30 g. Should you switch to the new feed? Use the .05 level of
significance.

Exercise 6: 5 Marks
Growth of open waters fishes are usually understood by observing the growth coefficient.
Growth of fish is considered isometric if growth coefficient value is 3 and growth coefficient
value of other than 3 is considered allometric growth. To know growth of Kuantan river fishes,
you have collected 28 Kuantan river fishes and have calculated their growth co-efficient with a
mean of 2.91 and a standard devistion of 0.32. Based on the collected data, make a conclusion
about growth pattern of Kuantan river fishes.

Suppose two sets of data obtained by two different scientists, a senior scientist and one recently
hired.
Exercise: 8 Marks

In a series of experiments on the determination of tin in foodstuffs, samples were boiled with
hydrochloric acid under reflux for different times. Some of the results are shown bellow:
Test whether the mean value of the results imply a significance difference.

Students sit two identical tests. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. The results are
compared. The teacher believes that the morning tests will score higher. Each class has 8
students and the percentages are shown below.

Bellow oxygen concentration (mg/l) of 7 tanks. Test at the 95% significance level the claim that
the week 1 had more oxygen concentration than week 2.

Two methods are available for determining the concentration of vitamin C in vegetables. An
analyst wants to know whether there is any significance difference in the results produced by the
two methods. Eight different test materials are analyzed using the two methods. The results are
as follows:
Test materials
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Method 1 291 397 233 349 365 291 289 189
Method 2 272 403 224 389 368 282 286 201
Test whether there is any significance difference in the results produced by the two methods?
