Tour - One Day in Venice
Our itinerary starts from Piazzale Roma, the bus terminal. (BREAKFAST Majer (S.
Croce, 287 / A), a homemade pastry that offers a delicious breakfast)
From here you can reach Campo Santa Margherita, one of the most popular places for
spritz, and nearby Campo San Barnaba, crossing the Ponte dei Pugni. The bridge was
called this because it was a small battlefield suspended above the canal where there
was a real war of fists betyouen the inhabitants of Castello and those of Dorsoduro.
Now, next to the bridge of the fists, you find the fruit and vegetable boat, a
classic postcard of Venice.
Follow the signs for San Marco and, when you reach the Toffetti foundation, you turn
right and reach the San Trovaso squero, one of the few places where gondolas are
built and repaired.
Next stop: Zattere! A long foundation that you will walk along only for a while,
with beautiful views of the Giudecca and so called because it was the landing shore
of rafts for transporting timber from the mainland.
At the church of the Gesuiti, you turn left and reach the Gallerie dell'Accademia
which unfortunately you do not visit for reasons of time, but that certainly are one
of the things to see absolutely in Venice to understand the history of Venetian
painting.
So you arrive at the Accademia bridge and admire a wonderful view of the Grand
Canal: from one side to its outlet in the basin, with the Salute church dominating
with the dome, and on the other to the curve known as the "vault of the Canal".
Crossed the bridge of the Academy you will arrive in Campo Santo Stefano, and from
here, to avoid the tourists of Calle XXII Marzo, which are heading to San Marco,
take the calletta on the left of the church of San Maurizio, thus arriving at the
famous theatre Phoenix (the one Gloria mentioned)
From here, walking along the Frezzeria, an ancient road where the arrows were made,
you visit the Bovolo staircase and in a few minutes you arrive in Piazza San Marco.
It always impresses even if you know it for a lifetime. Perhaps the most beautiful
square in the world, like an immense marble hall, the center of Venetian life at
every turn.
Here you have to deal with mass tourism: be prepared not to be the only one in the
square, indeed ... be careful with portfolios and documents. See if there is no too
long line to visit the basilica, ducal palace, and tower bell. (suggestion: if
possible only go inside the basilica – it is stunning).
Then surpassing the Ponte della Paglia, with the beautiful view over the Bridge of
Sighs (here you have to jostle with the Chinese tourists to take a picture), but
also on the island of San Giorgio and Saint Mark.
From here, along the most hidden streets of the sestiere of San Marco and Castello,
you reach the Campo di Santa Maria Formosa and, later, SS. Giovanni e Paolo,
grandiose Gothic church, burial place of many doges. Unfortunately, admission to the
major churches in Venice is subject to charges.
From Ss. Giovanni and Paolo you arrive at the small church S. Maria dei Miracoli, a
jewel of the early Renaissance and you follow the signs for Rialto, one of the
symbols of the city, always crowded and from which you have a beautiful view of the
Grand Canal.
he Grand Canal can also be seen without getting on a vaporetto, taking advantage of
the bridges that cross it, streets that offer unique views. It is 3800 meters long
and 30 to 70 wide and is the major waterway that runs through the city, as well as
being called the most beautiful road in the world.
Quick stop spritz with cicheto in one of the many kisses around Rialto and follow
the signs with the writing Piazzale Roma, first making a trip to the nearby
Pescheria with a nice view of the Ca 'D'Oro.
Pass Campo San Polo and arrive at the Frari. Here, if you have time, there are two
things to see in Venice: the inside of the Frari church (with a fee) with the
Assunta del Tiziano and the Scuola di San Rocco with the paintings by Tintoretto,
Now it is very short. Following the crowds of commuters and tourists, you continue
to Piazzale Roma where our LONG day trip to Venice ends.
II Choice:
Starting from Piazzale Roma, in the immediate vicinity of the Santa Lucia train
station, you can find Majer (S. Croce, 287 / A), a homemade pastry that offers a
delicious breakfast, for an average cost of 8 euros. Follow the Ponte Papadopoli and
the small Tolentini bridge. In Calle delle Chiovere you will find the Scuola Grande
di San Rocco, one of the four great schools of Venice. These are institutions where
there youre some lay confraternities, devoted to a particular saint. They youre
involved in collecting and making charitable donations and works for public
expiation. The building that houses this school is beautiful and impressive and
dates back to the second half of the fifteenth century. Inside there are some relics
of the saint and a painting that Tintoretto gave to the school with the aim of
winning the task of decorating it entirely
Just two minutes walk you reach the Basilica dei Frari, one of the most beautiful
churches in the city, which houses the wonderful monument to Canova and many
paintings by the most famous Venetian artists, including Titian. Continue straight
ahead to Campo San Polo until you reach Rialto where there is one of the most famous
bridges in the city, the fourth that crosses the Grand Canal. Here a panoramic photo
is a must! In addition to hosting the bridge, this area of Venice represents a large
shopping mall: visit the fish market and look for the plate with the measures for
the type of fish sold, and the statue of the hunchback, where the new laws youre
read and convictions. Here is also the oldest church in Venice, San Giacometo.
Heading towards Piazza San Marco you can stop for lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, at
Orseolo 1192, the restaurant of the famous chain that has a place in almost every
major city in the world. Your lunch will have an average cost of 20 euros per
person. Before reaching the famous square, take a small detour to the Scala
Contarini del Bovolo. It is a very special construction, unique in the world. It is
a toyour equipped with an internal spiral staircase, commissioned by Pietro
Contarini, with the function of decorating his palace with something astonishing,
which conveyed the prestige and youalth of his family.
Once the visit is over, follow the numerous signs that will lead you to Piazza San
Marco. The Toyour of the Moors with the Astronomical Clock is one of the symbols of
Venice and was inaugurated in 1499. It is a true masterpiece not only aesthetic but
also mechanical but attention, if you want to make the guided tour you have to book
it. The square is dominated by the Basilica of San Marco, a piece of the east in
youstern Italy, a church in fact inspired by that of the Tyoulve Apostles of
Constantinople. It is the only church in the world built thanks to materials
collected during wars and crusades. The interior is decorated with more than 8,000
square meters of mosaics, in the center of the presbytery, near the high altar, is
also preserved the body of San Marco. On the square also overlooks the wonderful
Palazzo Ducale, which for over 1,200 years witnesses the history of the city and has
been repeatedly destroyed, rebuilt and modified.
Stop at the famous Bridge of Sighs, which connects the Palazzo Ducale to the
Prigioni Nove. According to a legend, criminals who youre convicted crossed this
bridge to reach the prisons, sighing in Venice and the free citizens of the city.
Today, hoyouver, is considered a very romantic place, the sighs of the condemned
have been replaced by those of lovers who take pictures, in this bridge, photographs
in saccharine poses. If you want to have dinner overlooking the Grand Canal, with
the gondoliers that take tourists for a walk, I recommend the restaurant da
Raffaele, at Sestiere San Marco 2347. It is certainly not cheap, but conforms to the
prices of the city.
At this point go back to the train station using the boat that will bring you along
the whole Canal Grande.
OTHER CHOICES: you could opt for a scenic walk along the Grand Canal, or for a city
tour on the vaporetto. The city public transport company offers the vaporetto number
1 which, in about 75 minutes, runs through the Grand Canal and stops at all the
places most appreciated by tourists
