3. SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
Final product quality and performance depends on careful substrate preparation. Contaminated substrates may
cause poor adhesion or defects in the final dry film. Each item to be coated must be free of all contaminants e.g. oil,
grease, detergent, rust and blast media. Substrate preparation should be based on the design requirements of the
item. If you are unsure which process is best suited to your needs please contact a Whitford representative for
advice. The following are the recommended substrates and substrate preparation used with this coating:
Substrates: Aluminium. Aluminised steel.
Substrate preparation: As required for the basecoat used.
Basecoat: The final color of the coating system is largely dependent on the color of the
basecoat used. Apply
80 ± 15 microns "wet" of Xylan 80-087
110 ± 20 microns "wet" of Xylan 80-178
55 ± 5 microns "wet" of Xylan 4018
75 ± 15 microns "wet" of Xylan 80-018
before applying this coating.

4. PREPARATION OF COATING MATERIAL

Other information If caking occurs, pass the material through a 75 mesh (200 micron) sieve until the
powder is free-flowing.

5. RECOMMENDED APPLICATION TECHNIQUE

Application information/ This material is designed primarily for electrostatic powder spray application with a
technique: voltage of approximately 20 - 30 KeV. Consult with a Whitford representative if other
types of application are being considered. In order to prevent excessive film builds
and to limit the potential problem of the "Faraday Cage Effect," keep the voltage of
the electrostatic equipment to a minimum. Excessive film builds can lead to bubbling
and blistering of the cured film.
Recommended Dry Film 50 ± 25 microns
Thickness/coat:
Number of coats Typically 1.
recommended: Cure between coats if applying multiple coats. After curing allow to cool to 330 -
380°C (625 - 715°F) before applying further coat(s) by hot flocking.

6. FLASH OFF AND CURE SCHEDULE

Please note that oven temperatures can be very different to substrate temperatures and the following cure
conditions apply to PEAK SUBSTRATE TEMPERATURE.
Optimum cure schedule: 15 mins. @ 400°C (750°F) - for first coat.
360°C - until melt flow is achieved for subsequent coats.
Minimum cure schedule: 330°C - until melt flow is achieved for subsequent coats.
Maximum cure schedule: 380°C - until melt flow is achieved for subsequent coats.

7. TYPICAL CURED FILM PROPERTIES

Evaluate the coating according to the following specifications:
Dry film thickness 40 - 90 microns in total.
(Whitford TM114A): 1.6 - 3.6 mil in total.
Appearance Smooth, uniform finish.
(Whitford TM120A):
Gloss - 60° meter High gloss finish.
(Whitford TM121A):
