The song evokes the 1965 marches from Selma to Montgomery for civil rights. It features vocals, piano, and orchestra without percussion in order to have an intimate yet majestic sound befitting of Dr. King and the greater protest tradition exemplified by Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon's "Imagine." Common wanted the lyrics to be clearly heard and for the song to represent the grand protest tradition rather than being simply a rap song.
