From the NABJ President

Dear NABJ Family, Supporters and Friends: On behalf of the NABJ Board of Directors, staff, and convention planning team, Id like to welcome you to the National Association of Black Journalists 35th Convention and Career Fair here in San Diego. Despite the challenges weve all faced during the continued economic woes across the country and our ever-evolving industry, this years theme speaks to the unwavering spirit and commitment of our dedicated members: NABJ@35: The Power of Change. Many of us have been forced to adapt to change whether its by learning new technology or taking on heavier workloads as corporations cut back. Please find comfort in knowing NABJ has remained a resilient organization fighting to make sure your voices are heard. I am pleased to share with you that our members are being promoted and landing new jobs. Many companies have returned to the career fair eager to recruit. I am thrilled to welcome a few of our special guests, Dr. Oz, David Drummond of Google, CeCe Winans, and Hollywoods Boris Kodjoe. Hats off to our Honorary Convention Chairwoman Paula Madison and Convention Chairwoman Elise Durham for their contributions to this convention and NABJ. Youll find tracks have been created to meet your professional development needs whether youre a neophyte or veteran. From the Interim Executive Director

To my fellow NABJ Members: As a long-time member and supporter of the National Association of Black Journalists, nowhere in my career or business plan did I foresee serving as official Consultant/Interim Executive Director of our great organization. However, when the call came to step in, as a fellow journalist and businessman dedicated to the mission of NABJ, I was compelled to temporarily juggle things around for a few months and answer the call. It has been an honor to serve during this challenging time of transition in the media industry, but especially for NABJ. Dedicated board members, extraordinary staff, a talented development consultant, and an unbelievable group of dedicated volunteers have teamed up with me to analyze, plan and conquer a plethora of challenges while taking advantage of opportunities available for this organization. Our list of accomplishments is long but we have an even longer list of opportunities that still needs attention. We moved our national office into a new state-of-the-art building on the University of Maryland campus. Multiple contracts have been renegotiated saving us hundreds of thousands of dollars. We have transitioned to a new accounting system that better records, tracks and forecasts the financial needs of the organization. We have created more niche programming and improved the quality of programming that meets the immediate and future needs of our membership. We have crafted programming that provides appropriate and attractive environments for our sponsors and business partners. NABJ is moving toward a new highly flexible and agile business model that keeps our core foundation and journalistic values intact while creating an improved environment for our members, associates and business partners. Our successful future depends on the right leadership, strong advocacy, listening to our members, associates and business partners, creative fundraising, improved business practices, improved governance, making members and associates feel they are highly valued, creating programming that appeals to all segments of the organization, better marketing of our brand and an effective development manager. I can assure you that as part of the search committee for a new Executive Director, we are encouraged that we are getting the right person who not only understands the vision but who can execute the mission. We are a resilient organization and I will continue to work toward making sure that we not only survive but also thrive in the new frontier of media opportunities.

Yours in service,

Drew Berry Consultant/Interim Executive Director

2010 Annual Convention and Career Fair | July 28-August 1, 2010 | San Diego, California

From the Honorary Convention Chair

From the Convention Chair

Greetings National Association of Black Journalists, As the Honorary Convention Chair, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the annual National Association of Black Journalists Convention & Career Fair being hosted in San Diego, CA. This year, NABJ is embarking on a major milestone as the historic group celebrates 35 years as an organization. Over the next four days you will be met with exemplary training, information, unmatched networking and celebration. This years convention promises to equip media professionals with the tools needed to navigate the changing landscape of the industry and to remain competitive. Organizers have prepared innovative workshops designed to change the minds of professionals and to help usher them in the new age of journalism. The convention also offers the opportunity for participants to meet up with old friends and make new ones as well as embark on professional relationships. It is my hope that you will add the great city of San Diego as a place that is dear to your heart. San Diego is home to Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park and many more attractions and landmarks. I look forward to a successful NABJ Convention and wish you a wonderful experience.

Welcome to San Diego, NABJ! This summer we are all about change. The Websters University Dictionary definition of change is, To make different. To give a totally different form or appearance to: TRANSFORM. Change! It can be frightening, unsettling, intimidating. But change also can be empowering if you know how to embrace it and make it work for you. When we started planning the convention last fall, one of the first things we thought about was how to help our members navigate this ever-changing landscape that has become our industry. As business models evolve and change and technology pushes us in new directions, we realized that the old way of organizing what we offer at the convention just would not do. Gone are the days of print journalists, broadcast journalists, and new media journalists. We are all learning to be all-platform journalists. So, this new plateau warranted the need for NABJ to re-identify our convention tracks. We assembled a fantastic programming committee who worked diligently to make sure that the training you receive over the next four days is intense and relevant. Our programming tracks speak to where you are instead of who you are in your career. As you peruse the descriptions below, think about your career/calling and let the metaphors guide you to the top! The Lobby: Youve had your first internship or trying to get that first gig. Here youll learn how to find a mentor, learn to maximize your skill-set and get advice about early career challenges. The Elevator: This track is for journalists with more than a couple of years in the business, but who need that extra lift to go the distance. The Training Room: Here youll get hands-on, practical experience and walk away with applicable skills to help you up your game. The Conference Room: Designed for mid-career professionals who need to talk out their concerns. Here youll find discussions on industry best practices that will help you advance your career and maintain sanity. The Watercooler: Whether its breaking news or hot topics, this is the place to talk about, debate and examine them all. The Business Center: Ready to strike out on your own? Here youll get skilled on becoming a successful entrepreneur. The Executive Suite: For those currently in upper level management who aspire to the corner office. (Pre-registration required). We are empowered, we are transformed, and we are ready for new challenges. We are NABJ@35: The Power of Change!

In the spirit of journalism excellence,

Paula Madison Executive Vice President, NBC Universal 2010 NABJ Legacy Award honoree

Onward and upward,

Elise M. Durham NABJ Convention Chair

From the NABJ Region VI Director

Dear NABJ, Welcome to the Left Coast! I am so excited to welcome my beloved NABJ family to my home state of California. As a Southern California native, it thrills me to be able to share with you all the wonderful things that make the Westside, a great place to visit namely our beautiful weather! The last time NABJ traveled to California 20 years ago, we had a good time. We promise you this year will be no different. Your hard-working hosts in the San Diego Association of Black Journalists and the convention committee labored with non-stop love to bring you a fabulous conference. No doubt, our annual meeting and job fair is always a time to take care of business. But lets not forget after all, you are in California, where we fully own up to our reputation for being laid back! So while you are here, take some time to relax, hit the beach or a baseball game, or bar hop through the Gaslamp Quarter because you know how the saying goes: All work and no play makes NABJ very dull!

Welcome to Paradise!

Members also know that they are susceptible to the same health challenges on which they report: diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, anxiety, insomnia, stress, substance abuse, kidney disease and the list goes on and on. Since journalists are disseminating expert advice from health professionals to their audiences, it makes sense for members to heed some of that advice to improve their own health profile through healthy lifestyle changes. The primary goal of Healthy NABJ is to help members prevent the onset of these conditions, recognize their symptoms and get early treatment. The better educated our members, the better the quality of critical information they will be able to disseminate to broader audiences in a nation struggling with a plethora of health issues.

Some journalists are receiving training that will enable them to take advantage of new opportunities within the industry. However, many journalists are looking for a way out and appear lost in the wilderness--wondering whether they are washed up at age 35 or older! These alternatives frequently offer better pay, better hours and a more manageable work environment. This panel discussion will encourage journalists to think outside the box about their careers as a means to survive and thrive. Representatives from academia, public relations, non-profits and mediarelated areas will spur ideas about how journalism, analytical, and other tangible skills can be utilized in new job categories previously unexplored. LUNCH AND LEARN: THE COLOR OF ONLINE: WHERE DO WE FIT IN?

Location: Edward CD This is an executive roundtable on The Future of Journalism online and the role African American journalists will play in it. A full decade into the 21st century, we are watching as the news media reshapes itself for a new, diverse digital nation. But who is actually doing the reshaping? Who is telling the stories? The U.S. Census Bureau projects that, by 2023, half of all U.S. children will be non-white. By 2042, people of color will outnumber whites in America. Yet, when it comes to the staffing and leadership at some of the countrys premier online news operations, it appears that new media is looking a lot like old media. We will talk to the heads of some of those organizations and try to understand their strategies in shaping online journalism for an increasingly diverse America. Andrew Donohue, Editor, VoiceofSanDiego.org David Wilson, Founder & Managing Editor, TheGRIO.com Deirdre M. Childress, Vice President-Print, Home & Design, Weekend/Editor, The Philadelphia Inquirer John Harris, Editor-In-Chief, POLITICO Madison Gray, Homepage Producer, TIME.com Melonyce McAfee, Copy Editor, Slate.com Robert Naylor, Jr., Director of Career Development/ News, The Associated Press 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Health Care Reform was the most hotly-debated topic in Washington in 2009, and has been a source of controversy for decades. Now that the Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act (PPACA) is the law of the land, the hard work of developing the rules and regulations that will guide implementation is beginning and will have far-reaching impact, touching the lives of all Americans. African-Americans, plagued by disparities in access as well as in health care outcomes and health status, will be affected by the legislation in ways that are yet to be fully examined. The challenge of covering such complex issues was evident as journalists had their hands full investigating this developing story while trying to inform the public about what the various health reform proposals will mean to them as taxpayers and patients. Dont miss this rich opportunity to connect with leaders who are shaping our future. GET ON THE WELLNESS TRACK: BUILD A NEW YOU, A HEALTHY NABJ WORKSHOP
Powered by Coca-Cola Location: Gregory B Like much of the nation, many NABJ members are struggling to stay fit and healthy. Some blame stress. Others say they do not have the time to exercise. Many say they try to eat healthy but too often just cant resist unhealthy choices. Most simply say they do not know where to start. The session - just one component out of Healthy NABJ Initiative will offer three perspectives on how to get on the wellness track from well-respected fitness trainers and wellness coaches. This dialogue comes at a vital time for not just NABJ members, but for our nation, as well. Our hard-to-break taste for supersized, over-sweetened, over-salted dishes, combined with an apathy for exercise has made America less fit than at any time in our history. So much so that the White House has made its directive clear: Lets Move and teach our children, by example, how to live fit, healthy lives. First Lady Michelle Obamas Lets Move campaign has raised the consciousness of all Americans. But as we begin to make changes in our lives, questions arise: is there one exercise strategy thats better than others? How do I make better choices at the grocery store or restaurant? How does my overall mental and spiritual condition affect my body? No one routine or strategy works for everybody, so come hear the experts discuss different approaches that could help you build a better you! Location: Randle AB, 4th floor, Harbor Tower From acclaimed writer/producer/director J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Fringe, Lost, Alias) and executive producer/writer Josh Reims (Brothers and Sisters, What About Brian) comes a sexy, fun, action-packed spy drama that proves once and for all that marriage is still the worlds most dangerous partnership. Outwardly, Steven Bloom (Boris Kodjoe, Tyler Perrys Madeas Family Vacation, Soul Food, Resident Evil: Afterlife) and his wife, Samantha (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Dr. Who, Bonekickers), are a typical married couple who own and operate a small catering company in Los Angeles -- with help from Samanthas easily frazzled, handful of a younger sister, Lizzy (Jessica Parker Kennedy, Smallville, Kaya.). Secretly, the duo were two of the best spies the CIA had ever known, until they fell in love on the job five years ago and retired. When fellow spy and good friend Leo Nash (Carter MacIntyre, American Heiress, Nip/Tuck) goes missing while on the trail of a Russian arms dealer, the Blooms are reinstated by boss and agency liaison, Carlton Shaw (Gerald McRaney, Deadwood, Jericho), to locate and rescue Nash. With assistance from resourceful CIA field agent Bill Hoyt (Ben Schwartz, Parks and Recreation, Bronx World Travelers), whose professional admiration for Steven isnt hard to miss, the pair is thrust back into the world of espionage, disguises and hand-to-hand combat. Following leads that take them to cities spanning the globe, Steven and Samantha quickly realize that perhaps this supercharged, undercover lifestyle provides exactly the kind of excitement and romance that their marriage has been missing.

A Founders Perspective
By Nailah Ellis Timberlake As the National Association of Black Journalists celebrates its 35th Anniversary, one of its founders is stressing the continued need for our organization and its training and job opportunities as we move forward into this age of multi-media. NABJ, the nations largest organization of journalists of color, was founded in our nations capital by 44 men and women on Dec. 12, 1975. Its mission always has been to encourage diversity in newsrooms on every level of production from news intern to executive. NABJ has always had a clear mission and has stayed focused on that mission through all of its leaders through the years, said NABJ Founder Sandra Dawson Long, who is vice president of news operations for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and philly.com. Pushing for diversity in every segment of our newsrooms has been critical to the news reports we produce each day. Sandra Dawson Long Being a part of NABJ is the only way some journalists have been able to break into the industry, Long said. Networking with others in the field is important for career development. Without NABJ, many news organizations would not have taken the extra step to hire minority reporters to diversify their newsrooms. NABJ has also made the cultivation of students transitioning into the workforce an important part of its training platform by providing mentorship opportunities as well as training courses to help undergraduate and graduate students gain more knowledge and hands on experiences within the journalism field. With six regions represented within the organization, NABJ boasts a membership of 3,000 journalists and media professionals. This foundation of hard-working folks will continue to grow with the inception of new programs and training opportunities. Long suggests that young journalists hone their talent, seek advice from experienced journalists and take advantage of as much training as possible. Do not despair if you are having difficulty getting that first jobbe proud of who you are and what experiences you bring to the table, she said. Nailah Ellis Timberlake is a freelance writer in New York City .

NABJs Salute to Excellence Awards recognizes journalists in more than 70 categories. Salute to Excellence is the countrys only honor that commends exemplary journalism as it relates to African and African-American subjects, profiles, and themes. Special Honors recipients include Journalist of the Year Soledad OBrien, Lifetime Achievement Award winner Paul Delaney, Emerging Journalist of the Year Michael Feeney, and Community Service Award winner Michelle Singletary, are among distinguished honorees. NABJ 2010 MEDIA INSTITUTE FOR MEDIA PROFESSIONALS

Calling all Public Relations Practitioners and Media Related Professionals! Saturday, October 16, 2010 Washington, DC This day- long conference organized by NABJs Associate Members delegation will focus on the direction of the public relations sector and trends in the industry for PR practitioners of color, with a specific focus on independent public relations professional and those interested in pursuing freelance opportunities. During a changing time in our media landscape, creating the opportunity to engage and dialogue on our experiences in this sector is more important now than ever before. Registration details coming soon

An important aspect of maintaining and increasing the number of black journalists in newsrooms is training. In 1997, the NABJ Board of Directors created the Media Institute. In January 1998 at the University of Maryland, the institute hosted its first event, a leadership seminar with the intent to create a training center to promote and enhance the skills of journalists. Currently, the Media Institute hosts in-person events and webinars as well as training through fellowship and leadership opportunities. I think NABJ has made tremendous progress over its 35 years of existence, Long said. The organization has been able to embrace the technological changes in our industry and pass the information on to the membership. NABJ has created career opportunities for many journalists through its annual job fairs and postings.

PERCY QOBOZA AWARD

BEST PRACTICES AWARD

Abducted, Humiliated and Undaunted: Their Sacrifice

By Jennifer West Manjama Balama-Samba of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) and United Nations Radio; Henrietta Kpaka, also of SLBS; and Isha Jalloh and Jenneh Brima, both of Eastern Radio, will receive NABJs 2010 Percy Qoboza Foreign Journalist Award at the July 28 opening reception during the associations annual convention in San Diego. The National Association of Black Journalists annually bestows the Percy Qoboza Journalist Award, which aims to recognize foreign journalists who have done extraordinary work while overcoming tremendous obstacle, doing work that contributes to the enrichment, understanding or advancement of people or issues in the African Diaspora. The 2010 recipients are more than worthy of this honor, overcoming major hardship for the sake of our craft. Balama-Samba, Kpaka, Jalloh and Brima were abducted and attacked in February 2009 by the Bondo Society, a womens group that sought to prevent them from reporting on the subject of female genital mutilation. Balama-Samba was reportedly stripped naked in the bush and later paraded on the streets before being set free. According to Balama-Samba, prior to their abduction they received telephone calls threatening their lives and warning that they would be taught a lesson if they reported on female genital mutilation. In obligation to their assignment, they reported on the heinous issue, never taking part in any campaign. These women exemplify the true essence of the Percy Qoboza Award with their courage and unwillingness to waiver in the face of adversity for the sake of good journalism. The abduction and subsequent public humiliation of these journalists was both shocking and appalling,

said NABJ President Kathy Y. Times. Journalists should not face pressure not to report a story. As journalists, we have a responsibility to bring attention to issues ensuring basic human rights. According to the World Health Organization, more than 100 million girls and women worldwide are living with the consequences of female genital mutilation. In Africa, about 92 million girls aged 10 years and older are estimated to have undergone the procedure. In 2008, the World Health Assembly passed a resolution (WHA61.16) on the elimination of female genital mutilation, emphasizing the need for concerted action in all sectors - health, education, finance, justice and womens affairs. The World Health Organization efforts to eliminate female genital mutilation focus on research, advocacy and guidance for health systems. In response to their efforts to bring awareness to this issue, the awardees will be recognized at the opening ceremony aboard the USS Midway. Jennifer West is a freelance writer living in Chicago .

Paula Madison and NBC News Blazing the Diversity Trail

By Bent J . Wilson In a time when news operations continue to shrink and staffing cuts disproportionally affect journalists of color, NBC News set the standard for promoting diversity in management practices and in news coverage. NBC News and its owned-and-operated television stations will receive the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) annual Best Practices Award, while NBC Universal Executive Vice President Paula Madison will receive its Legacy Award at this years annual convention and career fair in San Diego. Madison, based at Universal City on the West Coast, is also serving as honorary chairwoman of the event. A study released in April by the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) found that newsrooms cut black journalists and supervisors at a higher rate than ever before in 2009, even as the minority communities they cover grow larger. Newsroom jobs held by black journalists were slashed by an unprecedented 19.2 percent in 2009, nearly six percentage points higher than the previous year, said the report, and since 2001, African-Americans have a net loss of more than 30 percent of the positions they occupied in American newsrooms. The news business is stressed these days, says Madison. It is unlike any other time since Ive been working. Pressure is on the news business, and when that pressure gets high, things like diversity are not at the top of peoples minds, she observes. No one is saying that they dont care about diversity. Its more like `we have to make our numbers; we have to trim and cut. So all the discretionary spending on ancillary programs that were supported in flush times is not supported now. Its a bad decision, and we can see that diversity is heavily impacted. I have a full-time job working on diversity, with 15 people on my staff and managing another 300 people on NBC Universals diversity councils, she says. I feel like Im a coach, and any coach is happy to lead a winning team. Im honored to be recognized, but Im much more honored that my company has been recognized. That, to me, is the biggest moment of pride for me. Bent J . Wilson is Online Managing Editor-Business Aviation for Aviation Week Group . She also blogs at http://benet_world . blogspot .com/ Paula Madison But for NBC Universal, spending on diversity is not discretionary, says Madison. And NABJs most recent annual survey of broadcast news management found that NBC Universal has the most African-American vice presidents, general managers, news directors, senior and executive producers in its Network News Division and in its owned-and-operated stations than any broadcast or cable network in the country. Diversity is integral to what we do. Our CEO Jeff Zucker made diversity one of his five operating imperatives. I can tell you that the budget NBC has for diversity, at a time when others budgets are shrinking, has grown by millions, she states. While Madison says she was thrilled to receive NABJs Legacy Award, she was more excited that NBC Universal is being lauded for its diversity efforts.

STUDENT CHAPTER FINALISTS

Marc Spears & Gregory Lee Present

Fifth Annual NABJ Sports Task Force Scholarship Jam

The Next Generation
By Denise Clay As part of this years student Salute to Excellence Awards, NABJ is honoring an educator from FAMU and a student from Howard. But the NABJ affiliates at both schools are vying for the honor of being recognized as Student Chapter of the Year for their efforts. Both chapters have distinguished themselves in the arena of community service. FAMUs chapter mentored high school students interested in journalism, and went to a homeless shelter to serve meals to the homeless, according to Immediate Past President Letitia Skippings. The Howard Chapter volunteered with the Washington Association of Black Journalists Urban Journalism Workshop, mentoring potential high school journalists. The students also volunteered at the JSPEA National Journalism Convention for high school students, said Mary Goldie, HUABJ president. The students from both chapters also spent the year connecting their fellow students with opportunities to learn about the profession they are entering. The Howard chapter started off the year by taking freshman journalism majors on a tour of the monuments and landmarks in Washington D.C., which gave them a chance to hear from HUABJs executive board and to hear what the chapter had planned for the year. The chapter also held a panel discussion entitled, Broadcasting in the Obama Age, which connected reporters, anchors, and a member of the Washington Association of Black Journalists with the students for the purpose of answering questions about the journalism as it stands now. There was also a multimedia tour of New York City that split the students into broadcast and print teams and took the students to newspapers and television stations. Sponsored by Yahoo! Sports and Disney Wide World of Sports

San Diego: Our Host Chapter Rolls Out the Welcome

By Dana Littlefield Sure the economy is bad, and the journalism landscape is changing, but organizers of the 35th annual NABJ Convention and Career Fair say attendees will have a lot to gain personally and professionally this summer in San Diego. This years convention will be money well spent, said Jerry McCormick, president of the San Diego Association of Black Journalists. Not only do the participants get to spend a few days in paradise, theyll get some of the best training by some of the best people in the business. But before our members get down to business, convention-goers will have an opportunity to mingle with friends and colleagues at the opening reception. This year the conventions Wednesday night event will be held in a venue that showcases the beauty of San Diegos bay front and one that acknowledges this citys military roots. NABJ is partnering with the Navy to host this kickoff event aboard the USS Midway, a massive aircraft carrier once active in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. Now a popular museum, the Midways four-acre flight deck will serve as the backdrop for the reception, offering attendees a welcome thats uniquely San Diego. Its going to be a fabulous event, said Elise Durham, this years convention chairwoman, who added that convention-goers will be able to experience the museums exhibits while socializing with other NABJ members. Coming to a Navy town, it only makes sense, she said. The Midway is walking distance from the host hotel, the Manchester Grand Hyatt, which is also close to other attractions in San Diegos vibrant downtown area, including dozens of restaurants, bars, shops and nightclubs. The Hyatt will also house the NABJ career fair with more than 70 exhibitors, plenary sessions and workshops, the latter of which will take on a special new twist.

Durham noted that the convention committee has been working for months to put together a broad-range of programming with an eye toward the changes and challenges facing journalists in todays work environment. She said the workshops will be organized into a series of tracks pegged to various stages of professional development. The six tracks aptly named The Lobby, The Elevator, The Training Room, The Water Cooler, The Conference Room, The Business Center and The Executive Suite are meant to provide opportunities for training, networking, empowerment and discussion to help NABJ members advance their careers. Im so proud of this, Durham said, noting the executive track in particular. This is the first time NABJ has offered management training for its members who have ascended past the programming thats generally offered to other members. Durham said the convention will feature a Healthy NABJ Pavilion connected to the exhibit hall, where attendees can take part in a number of workshops and presentations focused on health, nutrition and fitness. Among the highlights, Durham said, will be presentations from cardiac surgeon and talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz, who is expected to share information on five health-related topics AfricanAmericans should share with their communities, and Grammy-winning singer and minister Donnie McClurkin, who will be talking about his efforts in the fight against diabetes. And thats just a sample of all thats in store for attendees at this years convention, organizers said. San Diego is one of the most beautiful places on earth, McCormick said. Why not come here to get away? Dana Littlefield is a staff writer at the San Diego Union-Tribune. She also serves as vice-president of the San Diego Association of Black Journalists.
