421.1 DESCRIPTION
This section covers the advancement of pilot holes as well as the installation of soil anchors
embedded in the soil.
The layout, depths and types of soil anchors to be installed shall be shown on the Drawings or as
required by the Engineer.
421.2 MATERIALS
Anchors shall be Manta Ray and/or Sting Ray Engineered Earth Anchoring System or equivalent
as shown on the Drawings. Soil anchors, anchor rods, and coupling nuts shall be hot dipped
galvanised, and shall be load tested to withstand the design loads.
The non-shrink cementitious grout shall be a single component cement-based blend of powders
to which only the Site addition of clean water shall be permitted. The cured grout shall achieve
28N/mm2 compressive strength (cylinder) and 7N/mm2 flexural strength at 28 days. The non-
shrink grout shall be subject to the Engineer’s approval.
Temporary timber support blocks shall be of sound hardwood to the sizes shown on the
Drawings.
421.3 CONSTRUCTION
1. Setting Out
Before any excavation or Anchor installation is done, a geometric control line shall be set out for
the control of the retaining wall construction. The geometric control line shall be along the back
(soil side) of the coping or shall be a fixed offset distance from this alignment at a large enough
distance so that it will not be disturbed by excavation activities, and shall be used for all offset
measurement purposes for excavation, for bench locations and for anchor drive depth.

A profile control point must also be established and shall be used for control of the elevations of
all anchors.
2. Excavation
Excavation shall be done in accordance with Specification Section 203 to the elevations and
offsets as measured from the geometric control line and the profile control point. Where
required for the installation of the anchors to design offsets, only as much excavation as is
necessary for the installation of the row of anchors must be done. Anchors are to be installed
and locked to design loads or greater, and securely bolted against the temporary support timber
blocks, when required by the Drawings, before the excavation is carried to greater depths.
Excavated material for re-use as backfill shall be stored at a location close to its final place of
utilization, but never above the area being excavated.
3. Anchor Installation
Soil anchors shall be of the type and size as shown on the Drawings and shall have the size of
anchor rod, and couplings as are compatible with the anchor type.
Anchor drive positions shall be located on the basis of the design offsets, and elevations, and
shall be driven to depths as called for on the Drawings. Pre-drilling of holes for the driving of
the anchors is permitted, but the anchor must be driven a minimum of 1.20m in any hole, to the
design installation depth. The anchor driving record shall identify each individual anchor by its
code designation which can be found on the Drawings, and shall state the date, time of
commencement of driving, time of completion of driving, length of drilled hole (if any), time of
commencement of drilling, time of completion of drilling, lengths of anchor rod, numbers of
anchor rods, travel during locking, and locking load.
After driving is complete, the drive steel shall be removed from the anchor and the hole in
preparation for locking of the anchor.
Anchors are to be locked by use of a hydraulic pulling jack using safe and suitable devices for
connection to the anchor rod, and capable of recording the maximum tensile load to which the
anchor is to be locked. The travel of the anchor rod during locking is to be recorded. The anchor
rod holes shall be grouted using non-shrink cementitious grout under pressure for corrosion
protection. The soil face is to be held in place by way of timber blocks as per the Drawings.
(a) Measurement
The quantity to be paid for shall be the number of linear metres of soil anchor retaining wall
complete in place and accepted, as shown on the Drawings or ordered by the Engineer.
(b) Payment
The unit bid price per linear metre shall include the cost of furnishing all labour, material
and equipment necessary to complete the work. Excavation shall be paid for separately
under Specification Section 203.
