Keeping Our Kids Learning over Summer

By: Dr. Karla Hylton

Summer is finally here and our kids are all excited about doing absolutely nothing. This is their
time to have fun, laze around, binge-watch TV, sleep late, eat junk food and forget about
school.

Summer is also a time when kids forget information that they learnt during the school year.
Children learn by forming pathways between their cells. These pathways are referred to as
neural pathways or neural circuits. At school, they practice and go over information and build
on information already learnt. This practice strengthens these neural connections making them
strong and so easier to access, thus improving those memories. If these circuits are not used,
these pathways eventually wither and disappear altogether.

As educators and parents, this is unacceptable. It means that when our children return to
school in September, teachers have to spend between 1-2 months re-teaching material.
