Assumption of score evaluation:
Formula to calculate marks for individual question = Total weight age of marks / No of question

So, if total weight age for summarise spoken text = for 2-3 questions,
Then, Marks for individual question =

Formula to calculate marks for individual Communicative skills = marks for individual question *
weight age of Communicative skills as per band chart / total weight age for Summarise Spoken Text.
For writing, weight age of communicative skills as per band chart is 12 and for listening, weight age of
communicative skills as per band chart is 13.
So, Writing is of (---*12)/ ------ and Listening is of (----*13)/--------.
Now, consider If test taker obtained below three enabling skills for Summarise Spoken Text:

Criteria Out of Grade obtained

Grammar 2 1.5

Vocabulary 2 1

Spellings 2 1.5

Total 6 4

Then, his/her actual score for single Summarise Spoken Text will be as given above.
Formula to calculate actual score = (grade obtained in enabling skills* Marks for individual
question)/Max grade of enabling skills.
So, actual score is (4*3)/6 = 2 out of which, Writing is of (------------)/------- =---------- and Listening is of
(------------)/----------- =------------.
Note: The attributes given above are based on the fact of PTE band descriptor chart.
Tips:
This task requires the candidate to note the summary which is been spoken by the speaker over the
audio. Once the lecture begins you need to be very attentive about what the lecture is all about. Here
you will have to take the summary which means main points of the lecture.
You may get confused with Summarize Written text and Summarize Spoken Text. Summarize Written is
to read and write one sentence whereas, Summarize Spoken Text is all about listening and making a
summary of multiple sentences and of 50 to 70 words. However, it is very similar to Retell Lecture from
the Speaking Module.
Summaries Spoke Test is timed separately to the other 7 listening task. Hence, use all of the 10 minutes
for each SST.

How to score on each Communicative and Enabling Skills is as given

below:
1. For content you will need to mention the Main Topic and important keywords in the summary.
You will score zero if you write anything irrelevant.
2. To score for the length that’s the form of the SST ,you will at least need to write 50 to 70 words
in the summary. You will lose points if you write less than 50 or more than 70 words. So write
between 65 to 70 words. DON’T WRITE IN UPPERCASE LETTERS. Use correct punctuation marks.
3. To score for the Grammar, the summary should have grammatically accurate sentences where,
the sentence construction, Subject verb agreement and the tenses should be perfect.
4. To score for Vocabulary you need to use appropriate and precise words connecting to the
lecture spoken.
5. To score for Spellings, there will be no option of spelling the words incorrectly. Make sure that
not even one word should be written incorrectly.

PROCEDURE OF DOING SST IN BEST WAY.

What to do first
1. While listening write down the topic of the lecture, keywords and concept if possible.
2. Concentration is very important . Hence, start listening SST Podcast or English Documentaries to
improve your Listening Skills.
3. Concentrate on meaningful words, for example; if thelectureid about food, then concentrate on
words like: food/ health/ vitamins/ immune/ nutrients etc and not the grammatical words like a/
the/ it/ over/ which/ to etc.
4. Look for Nouns, verbs as the noun and verbs make a concept along with Adjectives too. So in
short the Concept = Noun+ Verb+ Adjective . “ Teachers believe in spreading knowledge”.

What to do next

1. After taking the words try to fit them into a structure as given below:
He Speaker was discussing TOPIC
She/he mentioned KEYWORD
She/he talked about KEYWORD
She/he described KEYWORD
She/he suggested KEYWORD
For example: The speaker was discussing innovation in education. He mentioned how education has
changed enormously. He talked about the impact of teaching techniques. He described the
inventions of education in all sectors of life. He suggested that education will change significantly in
the coming centuries.
So here you will score

Content: 1 point
Length: 2 point
Grammar 2 points
Vocabulary: 2 points

Spelling: 2 points Total: 9/10.
