ED5015 Assignment 2
1. A stress of 800kg/cm2 acts on the plane AB inclined at an angle of 30 deg to the normal
to that plane. The normal component of stress on another plane BC at right angles to
plane AB is 600kg/cm2 . Solve using Mohr’s Circle.

2. The factor of safety of the bracket shown in figure has to be calculated. The bracket has
a flexible arm and flexible rod. The moment of inertia of rod (I) = 106 mm4 , polar moment
of inertia (J) = 0.5X106 mm4 , radius (r) = 0.1m, length (l) = 10.0m, yield stress σy = 2.8M P a.
√
When a vertical force load (F ) = 1.0N at the end of the rigid arm a = 2 5m, calculate stress
matrix at point A.Evaluate factor of safety using both distortion energy and maximum
shear stress failure theories. All units are in SI.

3. A component of machine made of steel which resist a biaxial state of stress, σx = −120M P a
and τ = 100M P a. Check whether this part is safe or not for using.

4. Four rigid bodies, 1, 2, 3, and 4, are connected by four springs as shown in the figure.
A horizontal force of 1,000N is applied on body 1 as shown in the figure. Using direct
stiffness method,
(b) Assemble the above element stiffness equations in the form [Ks ]{Qs } = {Fs }
The spring constants(N/mm) are: K (1) = 500, K (2) = 300, K (3) = 400, K (4) = 300.

5. Consider a tapered bar of circular cross section. The length of the bar is 1m, and the
radius varies as r(x) = 0.05 − 0.04x , where r and x are in meters. Assume Young’s mod-
ulus=100MPa. Both ends of the bar are fixed, and F=10,000N is applied at the center.
Determine the displacement of central node, average axial force in each element, and the
wall reactions using two elements of equal length.

6. The plane truss shown in the figure has two elements and three nodes.
(b) Derive the final assembled equation (after applying boundary conditions) for the truss
in the form of [K]{Q}={F}

7. The distribution of the state of stress in a quasi-statically loaded component is given by:
b(ay + 2z 2 ) 3bz 2 2by 2
σ (x, y, z) =
2 2
3bz ab(x + z) bx
2by 2 bx2 ab(3x + y)
where a = 1mm and b = 2M P a/mm2 . Assume E = 72GP a and ν = 0.3. What is the state of
strain at a point P , the coordinates of which are (3mm, 1mm, 2mm)?

Assume that the springs are linear-elastic. Obtain the stiffness matrix of the complete
structure and come up with an expression for U = [U1 , U2 , U3 ]T .
9. A 12mm thick plate made out of a specific alloy is subjected to a state of stress as shown
in Figure 7. The in-plane dimensions of the plate are: a = 250mm and b = 300mm. The
Young’s modulus of the alloy used is 90GPa and the Poisson’s ratio is ν = 0.3. Calculate:
